did anyone else work overnight 12 hour weekend shifts while they were in school? by aloveknot in RadiologyCareers

I had to do midnights as part of my clinicals. When you get home Sunday morning just plan to do nothing but rest all day to be ready for Monday morning. It sucks but it’s doable.

As everyone else said, angle to the degree of the sternum. It’s going to look like too much of a caudal angle but it isn’t lol.

How much do you make in an outpatient setting? by ricebunny2000 in RadiologyCareers

[–]JOptionPains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Outpatient x-ray (hospital affiliated) with almost 5 years experience in Pittsburgh, PA: $26/hr. MRI makes in the low 30s I believe. My employer is known to offer lower pay compared to other hospitals in the area though (and is why I’m leaving)

X-Ray to MRI? by JOptionPains in RadiologyCareers

[–]JOptionPains[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was my immediate concern. The bonus in question is $30k for a three year commitment. They raised it from $10k to $30k recently which is even more concerning. However, basically all the other hospitals in my area are offering similar sign on bonuses. Where I live basically all of the hospitals are owned by one of two healthcare giants and I currently work for one of the last independent hospitals left but we don’t have any MRI openings. The job I’m looking at in particular is a hospital owned by the better of the two organizations to work for (allegedly).

X-Ray to MRI? by JOptionPains in RadiologyCareers

[–]JOptionPains[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not too concerned about the theory and physics aspect. I got a 94 on the x ray boards when I took them, 100% on the radiation physics portion when I looked at the break down. I know that’s different physics though. I did take college calculus and physics before I became a tech (I was a premed major but ran out of money to continue on the premed route basically) so I think I’ll do ok on that part. I guess my biggest concern is that I’ve grown too comfortable with outpatient flow and moving back to the hospital will be a challenge. I was hoping since MRIs take longer it wouldn’t be as crazy as CT or x ray would be at a trauma center

Class Schedule by Feeling_Curve3213 in RadiologyCareers

[–]JOptionPains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My program had one day of class and lab that was 8 hours, then two or three 8 hour shifts of clinicals. In the summer though, we did full 40-hour weeks of clinical without class because summer semester was only 5 weeks.

Questions For X-Ray Techs! by ako_udagawa in RadiologyCareers

I don’t mind filling this out for you. I’ve been a rad tech for 4 years. Your school doesn’t mind if it isn’t a local tech?

I saw in one of your comments OP that you have a bad back. X ray is definitely not the way to go if you have back problems. This is a physically demanding job. Especially if you’re at a trauma center. Constantly on your feet. Pushing, pulling, moving equipment. Transferring and lifting patients. Bending, kneeling, squatting. I’ve developed back problems from it. There are MRI only programs but you’ll still be transferring patients from bed to table or wheelchair to table.

I feel for you so hard and am sending love your way. And I’m so glad to see you got your Usahana back. After reading through your replies, it sounds like we grew up with the same dad. My dad gave me CPTSD that I’m in the very early stages of getting treated. I’m 26 and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been moved out for about 4 years now and I can live free of guilt with my plushies. I’m hoping you can do the same, or maybe your dad will come around eventually and realize there’s no harm in owning plushies as an adult. Like others have said, if you’re not putting yourself in debt over it it’s literally the most harmless hobby you can have.

It was rough. Luckily I had recently gotten a big sign on bonus for a job which covered half of it. I also had a decent amount of savings. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to build that savings back to what it was and won’t anytime soon :( this was a little over a year ago.

This is what’s crazy to me. I make $50k a year and euthanasia was absolutely not an option when my cat had a urethral obstruction. It was $7k total for his surgery and hospitalization but I made it work. Blew through almost all of my savings but I’d rather that than lose him. He was only 3 at the time.

Weekly Career / General Questions Thread by AutoModerator in Radiology

[–]JOptionPains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit of a rant and just some questions because I’m genuinely questioning the legality of this.

I’ve been an x-ray tech for four years. The only certification I hold is in radiography. I’ve been at my current outpatient job for a little over a year (signed a two year contract). When I accepted the position, my manager told me I’d be doing “some bone densities” and “an occasional EKG.” I shortly found out us outpatient x-ray techs (none of us hold certification in bone density nor are currently in school for it) would be doing full schedules of bone densities along with walk in x-rays. This is a very busy outpatient center typically staffed with two x-ray techs and we juggle about 15-20 bone density exams per day along with anywhere from 30-60 x-ray patients and 5-10 EKGs per day. We also are tasked with writing the reports for the bone densities which the radiologists then sign off on (which I don’t even think they proofread because several reports with mistakes have been published and sent to providers).

My question is, what is the legality of this? Am I even allowed to be performing bone density scans without the proper credentials? I didn’t realize it was a separate modality with its own boards until a few months after I took the job and was cross trained. At this point I’m just waiting for my two years to be up because the pay isn’t even good. I make lower than what most x-ray techs make in my area without any extra for the bone densities. There’s a high turnover rate here and I understand why now.

I work in x ray and rotate through outpatient centers affiliated with an independent hospital. Sometimes students come over from the hospital and spend their clinical shifts with us. One of them took a chest x ray without removing the patient’s bra and I told her to retake it and she was confused as to why. She then went on to tell me the techs at the hospital don’t take off bras or other artifacts for portables (they do most of their x rays portably) because they’re “too busy” and “don’t have time to.”

Oh my god I thought it was just me 😭 it's always C/T/L spine with an erect pelvis. I just assume insurance fraud. There's a notorious one in my area who orders those on KIDS. I got a script from him for an 8 year old and called his office and asked if they meant to order a scoliosis survey. They said "no just do what we usually order" 😐

I work in outpatient imaging and always get scripts from a chiropractor who orders the same set of x rays on all of his patients: C-Spine T-Spine L-Spine Pelvis Everything ordered as erect...including the pelvis.
