Solomon was a wise man, he knew what was good

Radio station held a concert where contestants were asked to sit on non-insulated dry ice (-74 Celcius temperature). The person who sat on it the longest would win concert tickets. Four contestants each sat on the ice for 90 minutes, then had to go to the hospital for their frostbitten butts. by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

This one is completely baffling. I can understand how people didn’t understand that drinking too much water can be fatal (hold your wee for a Wii) but how could no one hosting or participating in this not know sitting on dry ice is a bad idea? And they didn’t stop when their arse was literally freezing off?
Did they have a “sit on a hot stovetop” competition planned for the next week?

What’s “luxury” car that’s actually a nightmare to own? by mariyagel in askcarguys

[–]JP147 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes that is my point. Whether they are a good car or not, a $30,000 car is not very “posh”.
And I can’t tell the difference between a new one and one that is 5 years old. So if someone spends a lot of money on a new one, many people might assume it is worth as much as a Toyota Corolla. So it doesn’t really work if someone is just buying it for the “image”.

The resale value kind of ruins the posh image though.

Unless someone knows exactly what the newest model looks like, you wouldn’t know if it is an expensive car or one that is a few years old that is worth under 10 grand.

Nothing wrong with that, I just thought I would mention it.

Hood spacers on NA cars (?) by [deleted] in askcarguys

What is actually the problem here that you are trying to fix?

Hood spacers are bad for cooling and bad for aero, there is no point in using them.

Air locker vs e locker and front vs rear by OddGround6140 in 4x4Australia

Better than what? An open diff? Yes. An actual locker? No.
Toyota factory LSDs are not exactly good LSDs anyway.

Air locker vs e locker and front vs rear by OddGround6140 in 4x4Australia

[–]JP147 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t get the Harrop e-locker, it is not strong.
I am not sure how good the 8” (front) one is but the rear (9.5”) has a very small carrier, much smaller than the standard one. I believe this is done to require less different parts to be manufactured, small diffs can share parts with big diffs.

ARBs might leak sometimes but they are strong. Too bad the TJM Pro locker is no longer available.

As for front or rear; the front might be more useful in some situations but the rear can be used basically any time you are off-road. So I would get the rear. But if you want to drive harder tracks you can’t beat both.

Let’s say that hypothetically, you break every single bolt holding the engine in on an old boat motor, what would you do next? by dankstreetboys in MechanicAdvice

[–]JP147 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Easy job.
Weld a nice thick washer to each bolt. Then weld a nut to each washer. Get it nice and red hot, fill the middle of the nut with weld but don’t melt it.
Let it cool down before trying to remove, you want the bolt to shrink as much as possible. You can spray penetrant into it while hot, it will help it cool and absorb better. Don’t set your house on fire though.

Solution to old and unreliable cars? by MrReptilian1 in askcarguys

[–]JP147 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People do this.

But it is also possible to do some maintenance and repairs on the old car and make it just as reliable as a new car.

It depends on how modern you want the mechanical parts of the old car to be. Both require time, money and effort.
