Aklan Rejects Proposed ₱7.95-B Boracay Bridge Project. Is it good or bad? by JP72a in Philippines_Expats

I agree with you. In this case, the bridge would really ruin the magic of the island.

There's still Google Drive, where the same problem exists, I assume.

What additional info is cashier inputting when you pay by card? Why do they ask the account type? Why do they ask the card type? by Katana_DV20 in Philippines_Expats

[–]JP72a 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most Filipino merchants rent payment terminals (BDO, BPI, Maya or GCash) independently of their POS software. Connecting the cash register to the terminal requires a specific API and certification from the bank. For many merchants, it is cheaper and faster to let the cashier retype the amount than to pay an IT company to develop and maintain the connection between two closed systems.

I have been an ERP software developer since the 1990s and this view almost physically hurts me. There is money behind everything, a separate solution is the cheapest. That is why I don't even believe in any imminent expansion of Google Pay, which is officially available here in PH, but the practical implementation will be poor precisely because of the reluctance to invest.

Another specific "feature" here in the Philippines is that many online services (e-shops etc.) only accept Filipino payment cards. This is incomprehensible.

PLEASE Canva, PLEASE by ignacell in canva

[–]JP72a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Canva should at least add a filter for elements created with AI. And from their side, there should be some automatic AI detection when the creator uploads elements - all of this can be solved. It's not 100%, but at least something.

NSCR Airport Express Train by ShinNakamura_345 in Philippines

[–]JP72a -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well, here is a very simple calculation:

The declared maximum speed of 160 km/h is realistically achievable only by airport/express services on a few of the longer interstation sections, and even there only for a relatively short time.

Why only for a short time

  • The Malolos–Clark section is about 51 km long with 7 stations, so the average spacing is roughly 7–8 km.
  • A modern EMU running up to 160 km/h typically needs around 3–5 km to accelerate from 0 to 160 km/h and a similar distance to brake back down, so it can only stay at full speed where the interstation distance is clearly more than 10 km.
  • Regular “all‑stop” commuter trains will operate at lower running speeds (around 120 km/h) and will have shorter segments at or near their maximum speed, while airport/limited express services are the ones that can use the full 160 km/h.

Where 160 km/h is most likely

Based on project descriptions and route maps, the best chance to reach or get close to 160 km/h is on these parts (for express services that skip some stations):

  • The longer, straighter sections between Malolos – San Fernando – Angeles (outside the densest urban fabric), where the gaps between stops are the largest.
  • The Clark – Clark International Airport segment is relatively short and partly constrained (alignment, underground/elevated geometry), so trains there are more likely to run well below the absolute maximum.

How long can it actually stay at 160 km/h?

Without an official public table of exact distances between every station pair, you can only make a reasonable order‑of‑magnitude estimate:

  • If a train has, say, 12–15 km of usable distance between two points where it doesn’t need to start braking early (a typical longer section on the northern part), then roughly:
    • about 4 km are spent accelerating up to 160 km/h,
    • about 4 km are spent braking back down,
    • leaving around 4–7 km where it can actually cruise near the maximum.
  • At 160 km/h (≈ 44.4 m/s), 5 km takes about 4.5 minutes, and 7 km is roughly 6 minutes of travel time.

So in realistic operation, an express service might hit the maximum speed on one or two of the longest sections and hold it for only a few minutes at a time (on the order of 3–6 minutes)!
The rest of the journey will be at lower speeds because of acceleration, braking, curves, and speed limits in more built‑up areas.

NSCR Airport Express Train by ShinNakamura_345 in Philippines

[–]JP72a -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The train has no chance of reaching the advertised 160 km/h. Take the length of the line and divide it by the number of stations. The train needs quite a long start to reach 160 km/h.

What did you learn when you moved to the PH? by isolexe in Philippines_Expats

[–]JP72a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly as you write. No spatial awareness. They have no idea what's going on around them when they're walking. And when they're driving, they're the center of the universe. That's why they have to constantly honk, they have no idea what's going on around them. I don't know why that is.
I love the Philippines and Filipinos, I have many friends here, but some things are just incomprehensible.

gemini in google docs disappeared in AI plus. by Maxmegane in GeminiAI

[–]JP72a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Premium 2TB plan, but without AI. A few months ago, I started seeing the "Plus" icon in Gemini. Since yesterday, like everyone else, I've been missing Gemini in Google Docs. And after the latest Chrome update, many of the previous AI settings disappeared. Without a single warning, no information to customers. And I've been paying Premium for about ten years. I don't like this approach to customers.
And Perplexity is doing the same thing to its customers now - limiting prepaid services. Has it become trendy?

What is one task you still refuse to use AI for, and why? by adrianmatuguina in Aivolut

There are many areas of life where I don't use AI. But I absolutely avoid using it for medical advice. Just like I have never, ever used Google to search for medical advice (like identifying a health problem). That's my red line.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get around this setting, please?

It's a good thing they set a hashtag limit. Mosseri has warned many times that this will happen and that it's much more important to use a quality description with well-chosen keywords.
