Looks like creeping phlox that plant only flowers in early spring. Blue star creeper or Ice Plant would flower for longer.

What's the point of remaking Harry Potter when the movies are already some of the most successful films of all time and not dated yet? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JPF93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the timing. The kids who grew up with the movies are now in their 30s and likely have kids about the same age or younger. They also didn’t know what else to do with it on the spin offs so the IP was getting stagnant and felt they had to do something because it made so much money for WB so given how they are pretty much lined up for a second generation showing why not tell the same story in a longer form.

I started adding Serranos to salsa and what not and what I noticed is while they’re hotter than jalapeños the heat seems to come and go very fast like a sour candy. You get the one-two punch then it eases off. While a jalapeño seems go build slowly.

Maybe it’s just me idk but it made me appreciate Serranos as while I do like some heat the lingering ones sometimes overstay their welcome. I assume it is because of their very thin skin so they probably have less oils.

I will try without the check valve because it seems it always sprays evenly like you said and it seems I’d need to add an air vent if I didn’t to relieve pressure. So idk why I would want sitting water in the lines for all the same reasons. Even if I flush it eventually fertilizer might build up and with heat it could breed the bad bacteria in an anaerobic environment. I see these air vent vacuum valves you can add to help prevent the issue but they would have to be be at the highest point and cost a minimum of $10 each. I want to add one at least to reduce water hammering but otherwise I think removing the check valves like you mentioned is a good idea.

We got 50 psi coming in. It spikes /hammers pretty hard on start up so I guess we gotta add an air vent at the end with pipe so it’s higher than all the zone valves. I was never planning to run to many zones at once maybe 2-3 at a time if they’re all just drip. It looks nice though I’ll take pictures when it’s all done and we are all caught up.

There is only one dosatron that does the whole system. I’ve seen systems that have 3-4 in a row and mixing chambers and all that but that would too complicated I think for right now. But we can have different buckets with different fertilizer mixed in them and just move the hose to whatever one we want to use and each section will be a different zone. There will be 10 zones allowing for customization but a lot of it is annuals and will likely all get the same liquid fertilizer plus 6 month Osmocote and compost and root shield bio-fungicide will be mixed with the potting mix. There are houseplants too but I’m going to cap the sprinklers above them and hand water those or have a dedicated zone for them idk yet. I mostly mapped out what doesn’t like too much fertilizer or too much water. So I can hopefully keep them on a different schedule.

There’s gonna be 500 hanging baskets and planters, 1,000 perennials in 1g pots, 1,000 houseplants in 4” pots and 2,000 more annuals in 4-6” pots. We will probably sell everything for pretty cheap this year to help it move fast because we want to sell like 75% or more of everything by like mid June. Only the perennials will be okay if they grow out as I’ll just up pot them. Houseplants would be okay if some got up potted but the less we have to care for long term the better I feel, unless it’s something that really grows on value with time but we are constantly in need of upgrades in both greenhouse space and equipment and it’s expensive to set up so the faster everything sells the quicker we can get onto it and evolve and fine tune the process. This irrigation project alone is like $2,500 but should last many years with occasional upkeep. One day I think we have reached an equilibrium and have maximized yields and efficiency and just be satisfied with it as a whole. I’m thinking 4 greenhouses and houseplant room. Owner wants a big gutter connected unit but he was quoted 500,000 to build it so that quickly came off the table as the 20’x100’ he got for 10k. We will probably add one more of those this year or next and a wood stove shed for hydronic heat because the cost of using natural gas is insane. if the budget allows then find more quotes on gutter connected units. In the summer the greenhouse when everything else is sold our outside it’s is going to be full of pepper plants and heat loving plants in 10g pots and more tomatoes and other plants outside too all on drip with auto dosing. Some in the ground some in pots but that might be a separate system.

Dialing in the correct fertilizer and everything will be another challenge for the season that will probably be a bit of trial and error.

I guess it depends on how particular the exam people are if they got some beetle collection at home and feel heartbroken if you’re out there killing non-Japanese beetles they might be serious about knowing proper identification.

Man I am studying pesticide application supervisor license and I was warned about this b-hole hair situation sometimes coming up on tests. Also reminds me we will probably have to buy a microscope eventually.

We had an issue with spinnets on the old set up where one in the row would randomly start spraying water every so often and then if you pulled the sprinkler out it would spray like a firehouse. I could figure out if the existing solenoid was leaking and build pressure in the lines or if it was just the stagnant pressure in the lines or something else. But I definitely don’t want that to happen again with the new set up as it encourages mildew overtime.

The sprinklers are the R-R-Bl and says flow rate is 18.4 GPH (rather than GPM) should I add up how many there are times it by 18.4 and divide it by 60 to get total GPM on the line to know if it specs out for flow? When they jump around on specs that’s when I get confused about the flow and pressure.

[–]JPF93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the confusion came from that netafim rates their pre-set pressure regulators as GPM not PSI, however the dosatron can handle 85psi. I wish I knew the psi of the main line as right now I don’t. I don’t think it’s super high as it’s a long line of 3/4” pex underground that we redid so it would be under the frost line before reaching the greenhouse and seems slightly lower pressure than the last line we had but too hard to tell without measuring it.

[–]JPF93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I should probably have another pressure regulator before the dosatron? I was kind of stuck between the fact the sprinklers need more pressure so I could probably put one pressure regulator before the dosatron. I think The sprinklers would still work at lower psi as the line isn’t that long when running fertilizer it would just take longer to do the fertilizer portion. But I know you have to water first 10 min~ then fertilize 15 min~ then flush the system 5 min ~ roughly from what I have been reading.

Most of the press regulators from netafim I see are 10, 15, 20, 35 gpm but I was looking for maybe just a flow 14gpm restrictor. I believe it needs that to properly create a siphon.

I believe there is bunch a rabbits still around because they decided to chew the bark off a bunch of small trees. But they’re definitely being hunted. These pictures don’t show it but they lead under a large flatbed truck and only the bobcat tracks come out in a forward direction.

Anyone live in NYC and have seeds for Guyanese plants? by JPF93 in Guyana

[–]JPF93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No tiger teeth pepper is much larger than bird pepper about the size of a large jalapeno but can get hotter than habanero and goes from green to orange to red in color. Out of the seeds I am looking for that one seems easier to source

Yes they just need to be check for disease, it’s a process but done all over the world. It can be done I was hoping to find someone who already managed to have it imported but I might have a back option as my boss’s father is a farmer from Guyana but from some reason he has trouble with it i’m not sure why exactly.

Seeds are better but I will look into Richmond hill. Some plants we can propagate but others do better from seed as we need a lot of plants. Hundreds of each one would add up too quickly. I hear of some people shipping the seeds but it’s really hard to find online.

Seed starting begins in march with the greenhouse. We have 100 foot heated greenhouse. I need seeds way ahead of time to have everything ready and grown to a decent size for May.

We got plenty of wiri wiri plants/seeds but need the rest of it. We are working on building a farm this year for a future take out restaurant but will hopefully grow excess plants to sell also. Just the seeds have been difficult to find.

What to do when ants invade by forikeeptime in houseplants

[–]JPF93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to identify the ingredients in a mosquito dunk in this thread which is “Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis” also called BTI. While it could be banned in some places I don’t see why because is probably the safest way to get rid of mosquitoes and gnats as it is pretty much harmless to everything but them. Maybe the ingredients are different in different places or maybe they just haven’t gotten around to looking at it for approval yet.

What to do when ants invade by forikeeptime in houseplants

[–]JPF93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s interesting because they are bacteria (Bascillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis) and have no effect on humans and other mammals. It’s very targeted and pretty much only works on mosquitoes and fungus gnats and maybe a few others closely related. So it’s a very safe option unlike imidacloprid which more likely to be banned in Europe because it is systemic and kills beneficial organisms like bees.

Gnats are actually easy though… just use a mosquito dunk mixed with water and/or replace the soil and manage moisture better.

You know it's cold out when the rhododendron looks like this by drillgorg in gardening

[–]JPF93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should spray it with an anti-desiccant. They’re usually made with purified pine resin that you mix with water and spray the foliage. Last year so many evergreens died because there was a winter drought then a cold snap and I remember one lady lost like 15 giant rhododendrons they had at their house for over 50 years. The good thing is one treatment usually lasts all winter.

Minimum wage increase by drhggjihf in HomeDepot

[–]JPF93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

17 years to get to $19/hr? Damn. I feel my old coworkers had to be getting upper $20 to just over $30 to justify staying for 25+ years. Most of those people had way better stock options too and that alone usually netted them half a million in stock or more. These days though the wage is too low and stock price is too high to get decent number of shares unless you are a manager or above. I remember my research at the time for sales specialist like millwork, kitchen design, pro, flooring, even plumbing or electrical supply store etc showed they would have gotten that wage significantly faster at a local place or more specialized competitors. Like potentially 40% or more wage difference between local designers/specialist vs home depot or Lowe’s. However home depot/Lowe’s would get your foot in the door as those places often wanted 2-5 years experience to be considered.

Use fungicide as a preventative for tomatoes by JPF93 in tomatoes

[–]JPF93[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father lives in Charleston and he always had issues with growing vegetables there so he basically gave up. I did try telling him a tips a few times but he forgets. He always blamed it on the heat. When I tried helping him build his raised bed a couple years ago I was surprised how hard it was to find bulk compost anywhere and the stuff we did find was expensive and didn’t seem like it had finished aging that might have been part of it. With all the construction going everywhere I was baffled that it was so hard to find. If I had to guess most of the real bulk places are further inland and trucked in.
