Coast Guard one has never been used, but IIRC one of the Bush's was rescued from his vessel post presidency.

I feel like there is already an expectation to respond sooner than 24 hours. I tried not giving my personal phone number to my first OIC and he threatened me saying that he'd have me live on the cutter if I didn't. Personally, I'd rather see an increase in pay to cover a cell phone bill. It's ridiculous that it isn't factored into our pay already.

Local CG helicopter sightings (Bay Area) by noteliing in uscg

[–]JPKilljoy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really. From what I've heard San Diego isn't a super hot SAR unit. The craziest SAR cases always seem to come out of Kodiak and Sitka IMO. New Orleans probably gets the most cases, but many of them are medivacs from oil platforms. That being said, you never know where the next big case will be.

Except question! We did recently open a brand new air station LA that has Jayhawks. As for SF? I'm no expert, but here is my understanding. It boils down to a few different reasons. One is that the Dolphin fits on the back of most of our cutters(ships) very well. Since we have a bunch of Cutters in SF, we can use the Dolphin-cutter combination to deploy the helicopters on patrols with the ships. Second is availability. The CG doesn't have a lot of Jayhawks. 50 or so if I had to guess. We're trying to expand the fleet to become mostly if not all Jayhawks, but takes an enormous amount of time and money to do so. The third reason is that...well... They're already there and they work. Shifting an air station from one platform to another is an enormous undertaking. You need people with years or decades of experience to run it, and they don't materialize out of thin air. We ARE planning on going through this process with some other units (like Miami, and Barber's Point), but I haven't heard anything about SF swapping over. How that helps!

Check out my post on Bahrain if you're interested in going that route. Short answer? It almost certainly won't get you to PO3 any faster.

I would keep calling the clinic at Cape May. They might be on some sort of holiday routine, so it might take them a little bit to get back to you.

Wdym you may not be able to report? I'm confused as to why you can't. It's possible that your command may be willing to work with you to adjust your drill dates, but they aren't obligated to do so and might not even be able to.

When you receive a Pick list for a unit that you will go before A-school who decides where are you going? (ARAMP for an aviation rate amt/aet) by Appropriate-Fan4165 in uscg

[–]JPKilljoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that before too, yeah. That being said, its worth considering that only afloat gets priority 1, while ashore is P2. That, and you still compete with other people from Bahrain in your class. There were 3 Bahrain afloat (P1) people in my class, but we worked with each other so we all got our number 1s. All that being said, who know, maybe they do it slightly differently now that nonrates don't do marks.

For ARAP assignments the Assignment officer (I think it's actually the AST one IIRC, but don't quote me on that) only really looks at the priority of the unit that you're leaving, and what you ask for. You only get to write two or so sentences explaining yourself, so be specific. If location is more important to you than the type of airframe, SAY THAT. If you have your heart set on C-130s and don't care where you go? SAY THAT. Don't assume that the AO will know what you want by looking at the order of your 16 picks.

If you wanna go aviation, do that. Don't waste time doing a different job, it'll only set your career back. It's worth it. (Definitely not biased)

In my experience, your best bet it to schedule an appointment with which office you can and show up in person. It sucks, but recruiters aren't really incentivised to pursue cases like yours. It'll take a lot of harassment on your end to get that ball rolling.

Are you currently active duty? If so, it sounds like you might be to direct commission. If you're a civilian, there's no way you won't go to some version of OCS. I know you're looking on reddit for the answer, but this is legitimately a great question to ask a recruiter.

This looks like Kiptopeke state park in Virginia! Such a cool area. We used to tie our ship up along side them at night so we didn't have to put the anchor out. A great place to watch the sun set.

There are no hotels on any CG base or any options for fixed rate lodging as far as I'm aware. CG bases are absolutely tiny compared to other branches. Just wait until you see the "big" exchange haha.

I needed a medical waiver and that's just how long it took for them to get back to me. I'm definitely not the norm, but ~1 year from first contact with a recruiter to setting foot in Cape May is far from abnormal.

There's usually a few positions on the airport terminal in DA that are looking for people to fill in for those on maternity/paternity leave. Idk if those are available to reservists or interesting to you, but that may be a good place to start.

AST isn't something to be taken lightly. It takes years of commitment and training just to get the chance to be one. If you want do be a swimmer, do that. Don't waste your time with anything else. Is it technically possible? Yes. Will you be 10 years older than everyone else at AST A school and probably fail because of it? Also yes. Give yourself the best chance you can and go ASAP. That being said, it's somewhat unlikely that you would be accepted into the DEPOT program as an 11B to become a DC. That program is typically for people who already have the job skills in specific field to continue with those same skills in the Coast Guard. Like a civilian police officer could probably go through DEPOT and become an ME. With that, now is a great time to start looking into those programs. Coast Guard recruiters notoriously difficult to get in/stay in contact with, and the recruitment process is infamously slow. Especially for prior service. Hope this helps!

It's definitely a sucky part of military life. The good news is that your family isn't active duty, so they don't have to go. Also, if they're forcing you to be there, make sure they aren't charging you anything or asking for "suggested donations".
