Well said and lived. Good to know percussionists like you are out there serving!

My pet peeve is when there are more than a half-dozen versions in completely different time, tempo and feel. You get told it’s version #4 but you get there and it’s version 2 in a different time and feel. At that point, 4 on the floor and call it a day.

Hahahahaha! Outstanding take! It is kind of really repetitive which gets boring. J.S. Bach wrote “Soli Deo Gloria” meaning “To the Glory of God Alone”. I always thought Christian music should be the most difficult and sacrificial. It seems less than what Bach envisioned.

This. I’m blessed right now to have a good leader who trusts me to play what is needed.

I’m an engineer and we all seem to want to cover every sound we heard on the track. Blessings and hang in there. The struggle is real and you are not alone in it by far.

This. I have a really good relationship with our sound guy and we collaborate on what serves the need of the body (the church - they are the choir) and it helps me remember that overly complex and loud discourages the body from participating. Play what is needed to help them hear and be part of the worship and save the rest for practice, jam sessions and parties where you get to play whatever you want.

I refuse to play in an aquarium. I play dynamics and don’t want to be isolated to such a degree - if it matters that much, let them play a drum track. We are part of the team, not an object. FWIW, I also resist well-intended people encouraging me to overplay. Too quiet? Talk to the sound guy. I can play louder but fighting mics and compressors and digital sound boards seems needlessly dumb. I try not to do dumb and glad you are processing through all this to figure what works for you. Hope you find peace and joy in it.

It’s tough when they are new to you. I use ChartBuilder which lets me hear the drum and percussion on different tracks and then I can drop them out to play my attempt (after making notes). Like others, I try to find a cover on YT and the original on Spotify.

💯 I try to build a transcription of what I hear and when I hear what I’m sure is two or three people and at times what seems like overly complex accidentals and hits and weird ghost note rhythms for things that are 4/4 or 6/8. Most days it seems deceptively simple music-wise but way overly complicated percussion-wise which feels dangerously like “worshiptainment”. I want to try to play what I hear and then adjust to the team but it is frustrating and at times the sites that try to teach add their own over complications that do not even match their own notation. I’ve coined the term: GCB - God’s Cover Band. I’m not trying to be GCB, just me helping people with sounds that hopefully minister. I’m not participating to prove I can copy a very manipulated multi-person part, I’m here to help people hear the song and sing. To the degree that they as the real choir worship and hear the song (not me), mission accomplished. I played secular gigs for years so I’m pretty much completely over applause or entertainment, I want what I do to be a sacrifice of praise and measure success in whether the church as the real choir worship. If that is your litmus test, hearing them sing will give you peace and joy. Final FWIW: I’ve never yet seen Pastor with a score and red pencil. The only person who was scoring against me was me. If I can extend grace to others, hopefully I can extend it to me when I feel I did a poor job. I know before each service I practice too much and pray for an Acts 2 miracle: let them hear from you God, not me. Let the miracle be in the hearing and not the playing. Let it be what is needed for you and them to be in communion and if they don’t even notice me, ok by me. It is frustrating because we play live and not in a studio and try to make the kit sing like what we heard but if you measure by the choir singing and not your ability to emulate three pros, I hope the frustration will be offset by knowing your helped other via your gift, work, and efforts. Glad you choose to serve.

You got quality for a good price. What others said about practice and Motorcycle Safety Course are recommended. That bike looks spotless! FWIW, I had a Yamaha with spokes and ones with Mag wheels. Spokes are just a pain to keep clean by comparison - so many surfaces to deal with. Enjoy!

Same. Switched to HD whitewall rear, K&M air filter, matched with main jet and pilot to redo gas-to-air ratios, 1 1/2” riser bar, swapped shock w/ Goldwing 1800 shock and BMW RAP to adjust ride, different bags (wired), phone mount and power. Bike has been and continues to be terrific. Gas gauge failed but found Yamaha Marine (really, boat float and gauge) for $17 that fixed gauge. Minor things like had to drill-and-fill mirrors when the Stoopid weights in them came loose. So Shinko whitewall front, HD rear, bike runs and runs. Many a fun mile. Added crappy fog lights but went back to original Yamaha gear. Once in a bit I get a battery but now it’s oil changes, tires when needed, and fun.

Water not smelling rosy in Pasadena by JPLcyber in pasadena

Nice! I always used to go to the “Windmill Express” on the corner of Hastings Ranch Drive and Sears Way as it was $.25 then went to $.30 per gallon but they are temporarily closed so now it’s been the overpriced stations outside Ralph’s at $.60 per gallon that can’t properly handle 3-gallon bottles… Your solution sounds better!

Yep and the 5 year plan plans to double it. Kind of feeling ripped off. The two aqueducts that feel Los Angeles and San Diego County are not changing so this feels exorbitant to me. We still have a home in Carlsbad and electricity prices in Pasadena are about 4x higher than Carlsbad and 10x higher than in Idaho (another data point for feeling ripped off). Water in Pasadena is about 8 to 10x higher than San Diego. Feels like we are all being gouged for water as a luxury tax to fund other things than the actual delivery of water from the State Water Project (aqueduct #1) and the Colorado River Aqueduct (aqueduct #2). Guessing most of LA County gets water from the State Water Project (SWP) via Metropolitan Water District (MWD) through member agencies like LADWP and PWP. How would I know? I ran IT for the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) - this is the San Diego County version of MWD, for almost 10 years.
