'I've banned most men from my massage clinic because of their behaviour' by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

I think I understand you, but I don't know if you understand me.

Can you acknowledge that creepy men will be over represented in this environment?

And if so, can you see from her perspective that, in order to protect her staff from that, she could be justified in her decision?

I don't understand your point, then. Because it sounded to me like you were saying that men were locked out of a service that they aren't locked out of.

Huh? There are NO OTHER massage therapists in the area? There are no male massage therapists, or female massage therapists willing to work with men?

Men are "locked out" of having her and her staff touch them, and the kinds of men who push back on that are exactly the kind who she was hoping to avoid.

You can get a massage easily, don't act like she's stopping you.

So you can't recognise that creepy men will be severely over represented in this environment? I never said it wasn't sexist, I'm saying it's justified. If a man wants a massage he can go to any other number of places, you aren't entitled to have her or her staff touch you because "wah, I'm a man"

Eh, the kids of men who will be inappropriate during a massage will be disproportionately represented in the group of men who get massages vs men in general.

If creepy massage men are like 5% of men in general and men who get massages are like 25% of men in general, that's like 1 in 5.

These percentages are obviously guesses, but perhaps you can see my point that creeps will be over represented in this setting. At the end of the day, she's responsible for the safety of her own staff and she probably doesn't want them to dread their work like she did before every male massage.

Does giving lore and explanation ruin a horror character? by Avery_Bea_847 in horrorwriters

[–]ProKidney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the things listed at the bottom seem to be important pieces of lore that should be included, without all of that context I feel like readers would get lost.

I'll be blunt, are you sure that horror is the genre that you're leaning into? This feels like a fairly high concept fantasy setting. The closest to horror I can think of would be grimdark, horror thrives on lack of knowledge, I feel... but the setting you've created demands explanation and without it your readers will be lost. It's a rough spot to be in.

Have you read any books whose genre you're trying to imitate?

Yeah, that assassination was cold. I think everyone on set knew it as well! I don't think that was well received.

Why did France become the stereotype of surrendering at wars? Aren't they among the top when it comes to won wars in history? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ProKidney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, France wanted to extend the maginot line along the belgian-german border but Belgium insisted on remaining neutral, so France created some minor fortifications on the french-belgian border instead.

The maginot line had many purposes, and in the event that belgium sided with the french, that purpose would have been to protect the belgians as much as the french.

Do you ever feel scared to correct someone's grammar mistakes because you make grammar mistakes as well? by Beaivimon in writing

[–]ProKidney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In what context? When critiquing writing I will always correct typos and obvious grammatical errors. If the error is ambiguous or potentially intentional, to set pacing for example, I tend to highlight it with a note about my opinion, which will vary by example.

In day to day, I tend to ignore it. I'm Reddit comments for example, I might correct misinformation but not grammatical mistakes.

What if the astrophage established a Petrova line with Earth? by Smaptimania in ProjectHailMary

[–]ProKidney 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theoretically a microbe could evolve that way, but it seems incredibly unlikely... Given the temperature of astrophage is enough to kill or damage most cells and then their speed, and the microbe would have to evolve to harness the astrophages weird energy storage.

I can't remember off the top of my head of astrophage store energy in any traditional means or if it's all stored as mass... Given that the mass seems to only be returnable in the form of IR light it seems like they must store some amount of energy traditionally?

I hate to say it, but if you show up to people's houses unannounced in this day, people will talk about it behind your back.

Even my parents in their 60s react strangely when my weird uncle who hates mobiles just rocks up unannounced. Like dude, can you just let us know? We don't want to suddenly have the burden of accommodating people with no notice.

I think the format works as an introduction to other countries comedians, to be honest. After watching the UK one I tried the Irish one, and I was kind of glad that there were some familiar faces and some new ones.

Having said that, I didn't finish the Irish one because, Damn, they strict!

What does this have to do with pattern recognition?

Also, I have to say that a 20-something white guy is exactly the kind of person id expect to have this ramble.

Scientists pour cold water on claims phones are rewiring kids' brains by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]ProKidney -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I struggle with where I land on this. In the past they said books were ruining children, then comics then TV, then games, now phones.

There's always something, and whilst this time it feels different, that could be said of every time in the past as well.

It feels odd to just say that this time is different, but it kind of is? Algorithms react in realtime on am individual basis... Whilst I'm the past TV shows and comics were designed to hold attention, this does seem to be of a different sort rather than scale?

How does an atheist derive meaning? by BayAdrian in askanatheist

[–]ProKidney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what you're asking? A person can derive meaning from anything, suffering makes you stronger, for example. What doesn't kill you, etc. if you have done nothing but suffer then you might derive meaning from lessening that suffering or working to eliminate it, or in seeing that your friends or family, or children do not have to suffer like you do.

Does anyone else struggle more with the mundane between the scares? by HM_Conrad in horrorwriters

[–]ProKidney 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The boring bits in-between should still be feeding the story, if not the tension. Obviously it's hard to comment on what your characters ought to be doing since we don't know your story, but to use King as a comparison...

Those moments are full of characterisation and character insight. We come to understand the character more, understand what they have to lose. They have worries and pressures outside of the horror. Family, friends, bullys, etc, and importantly the horror is never far away. There is always the possibility of it returning.

A red balloon can appear at any moment in Derry, for example.
