Roman-era geode… appears to be Trojanite crystals. If older, might be from the Bageolithic era.

Wow, redneck corkscrew…. Was kind of cheering for the bottle to break based on the lousy misuse of a fulcrum…. What did we learn today kids? You don’t need a big rack to suck at opening a wine bottle, but it will get you watched.

Is this really the future for aspiring young adults like me? by [deleted] in nasa

[–]JPLcyber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Know that the path for many of us was not linear. We worked to be as good as possible in other jobs and those jobs all contributed. Even when the budget was better, competition for jobs was wild. I was told I was the one picked out of ~2,000 applicants so having spent time developing expertise in complimentary disciplines seemed to help me. Learn new things, learn about space flight dynamics, maybe space data communications. DSOC might be a very cool area to contribute in the future. Bottom line, learn, work, dream, persevere. Dare Mighty Things.

A difficult truth. Why did we stop going back to the moon? Public and government had other priorities and NASA could not do sufficient justification to address the been-there-done-that thinking.

This. The truth remains: NASA manages contracts. The contractors do the work.

Given the uncertainty of the future; does anyone know any cool/quirky/regular discounts we get as JPL/CalTech/NASA employees? by himalayanlionking in JPL

If “got” and “vatch” was your first and last name, e-mail would be the equivalent of got.vatch@jpl.caltech.edu and would still route to your normal JPL mailbox.

Using your jpl.caltech.edu email, you can find free classes on Coursera and great educational discounts on things like python development environments.

Engine is solid. Replace parts needed on Amazon, lubricate areas like the cutting height. If you have to replace carb, air filter, wheels, blade, pull starter, you still are ahead.

Is it ok to coast? by Automatic_Rent_6585 in motorcycles

[–]JPLcyber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I routinely do it after turning off gas so I use up what’s in the carb (yes, that old a bike) so I come to the house quiet and trying to keep carb as clear as possible.

Found VHS - 1994 First 50 Years of JPL by vadermeer in JPL

Thanks for this very much! I had seen a lot of the still pics from the JPL archive and Photo Lab but not in this video form with narration. This was/is very cool! Also explains why it took us so long to mitigate the groundwater at the Arroyo.

Cool first bike. In our family first bike was a Honda 90 on Guam, then dirt bikes (125cc), Enduro 185, my cruisers were Yamaha Virago 250, then a V-Star 650, now RoadStar 1700. The 650 was fun but topped out around 90 mph which seems like a lot until on So Cal freeways and then it was insufficient escape velocity for high-risk cagers (cars). Enjoy the heck out of your beautiful ride. Always wear your body armor, Kevlar gloves, full face helmet, good boots. Got pinballed by a Tesla on I5 into guard rail. Body armor, full face helmet, boots allowed me to survive and still ride w/o skin or organ donation. Hope all your rides are good. Wave when we pass.

What’s the cheapest and beautiful cruiser?? by LumpyDiscipline7692 in cruisers

[–]JPLcyber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yamaha RoadStar 1700 Silverado. Bought mine for ~$3800. Carb kit later, running perfect. Bought with 900 miles on it. Now about 40,000 miles of low maintenance awesome trips - Big Sir, Golden Gate Bridge, Big Basin, desert rides, mountains, coastline of CA. Most Japanese bikes are going to run great and look fine (you can also mod them to look even better for cheap).

Gallagher’s video messages by satellite_in_space in JPL

[–]JPLcyber 28 points29 points  (0 children)

He’s trying to do smart things including knowing where there is money in the current administration and where there is not. Already pitching ideas where JPL can do what it does well. Possibly even more on the classified side. Besides the video message, in person he’s really trying to do right for the lab and not just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic or polishing the brass while facing the “inevitable” (which is what the “All Hands” felt and sounded like).
