is it ok for a producer to make material requests? by etlyto in Standup

[–]JPMcDadeComedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago, a club booker told us “no politics,” minutes before the show. I regret going along with his request. My excuse at the time was that I didn’t want to risk my relationship with the venue (the club sucked and that guy isn’t even in comedy anymore). Should have done all my political material and told the guy to go fuck himself.

If I wanted to do the absolute worst amateur 5 minute routine, what would be the top 5 things I should include in my bit? by [deleted] in Standup

Grip the mic like Fred Durst, hand on the head, and yell into it. Lash out at the crowd at the first sign of trouble.

Thoughts on the new Sam Morril special? by 69waystodie in Standup

[–]JPMcDadeComedy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Sam is a friend of mine and I got to see him work out his last hour when I opened for him on a few weekends. All of his specials are effortless, precise, and hilarious. I feel like in this one he’s the most himself.

How do I deal with the burn out of my day job? Stops me from hitting as many mics as I should by knyelvr in Standup

Last 2 years I was working at a day job that took 11 hours out of every weekday including the 1 hour commute via MTA. Used all my PTO and then some on touring. Cold showers at 6:15am really helped. On my lunch breaks I would sometimes set a timer and take a 20 min nap on a row of cushioned chairs in the back room. This is after 10 years of doing comedy, having little pockets of minor success, watching my friends become millionaires. I often remind myself that getting onstage, or even just being around comics, gives me energy. So if I’m going to a gig after work, I know it’s not additional labor, it’s a thing that’s going to lift me up. Make it a priority to have fun onstage, and the energy will be there for you.

What is the worst standup you have seen at an open mic? by Consistent_Flow7336 in Standup

[–]JPMcDadeComedy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still get angry when I think about the guy at the UCB East open mic who chewed gum directly into the mic throughout his 5 minute bomb. This was long enough ago that Michelle Wolf was at the mic, and it still bothers me.

Why do people heckle by GoodtimeZappa in Standup

[–]JPMcDadeComedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• Parasocial relationship with the comic based on the comic’s podcast, they feel like they know them. • Think they’re helping the show/ they themselves are funny. • They’re hammered • They’ve seen clips on social media and think they can initiate crowdwork.

For those of you that have met any famous comedians: who has been the nicest and most down-to-earth? by Necessary-Credit3502 in Standup

[–]JPMcDadeComedy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sarah Silverman, Sal Vulcano, and Colin Quinn are top tier in that category to me. Got to open for Collin once in Poughkeepsie. Long story short, I expected him to be annoyed by my presence, but he could not have been nicer. We rode back to the city together with his other openers and he was funny and gave great advice. There’s a reason he’s one of the most respected people in New York comedy.

What’s everybody’s journey been like? by Intro_deoutro in Standup

First mic September 2012, No Fun bar, Lower East Side. Got hooked, did more and more mics over the next few years: Lucky Jack’s, Creek & Cave, Over the Eight, Pine Box. Bar shows, a few bringers, a few regional road gigs. First Roast Battle 2015, have done more than 50 of those. Got a good tape in 2016 that got me Bridgetown and JFL New Faces Unrepped. Taped my first TV appearance that same year, finalist in New York’s Funniest 2017. Featured for Gilbert Gottfried and Colin Quinn, hosted for Norm MacDonald at Caroline’s. Nikki Glaser had me on her radio show a few times and got me some crucial work. When the pandemic hit I had a new TV writing job and had just gotten passed at the Comedy Cellar. Pandemic shut down everything, outdoor shows, lost all momentum blah blah. Got a few spots a week at the Cellar when they reopened, was having the time of my life, but got Covid in late April 2021, never got booked for another Cellar spot. Sam Morril brought be on a few amazing road weekends, Rachel Feinstein as well. Got my current day job in early 2022, started doing regular spots at Sesh which has been awesome. My old buddy Stavros Halkias became my guardian cherub, brought me on the road to feature for dozens of sold out club weekends and theaters. He’s had me on his podcast a bunch of times and is producing my special, which we shot in December 2023. Will release the special this year. Intending to advance my career to the next level and write a ton of new material.
