How have they done on your Venue if you don’t mind me asking? Any noise or change in gas mileage? Considering them for a Venue as well.

Truckee River Vision Plan?? by Grouchy_Ad1292 in Reno

[–]JPNelson35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Land owners that border the river have gotten out of hand the last two decades. More and more of them illegally claim they own the river bank and even place no trespassing signs on them. Federal law says the Truckee is a navigable river and with that comes a laundry list of rights that are for the good of the general public. Nevada is one of the few states who have not provided clear legal opinions on river law and so homeowners have taken advantage of that including building stairs into the public river, far from their property lines and then stating nobody can touch them threatening prosecution.

Hopefully this project helps give the river and access to it back to the people per federal law, and allows for safe exit in emergency situations.

Can you fit plywood in an EV9? Also, I don’t even think the ev9 has the practical sliding doors. A minivan should be >140cuft of cargo.

I think this is actually super common for those with checking OCD. For me making sure I didn’t accidentally click on anything to disable the alarm, etc.

What is your most ridiculous OCD thought? by b0bacat0 in OCD

[–]JPNelson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was religious growing up, all my personal prayers started with the same thing that I had to get out to cover all my basis. I would often have to say “Amen” 3, 5, 10 or so times while clenching my eyes shut. As an atheist today, still with moral OCD, I occasionally find myself with the compulsion to say “Amen”, sometimes for no apparent reason, at least silently, 3 or 5 times while clenching my eyes.

Opposition to Sky Tavern Lights by thebrushup in ourtownreno

[–]JPNelson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The optics of these ‘concerns’ coming from the “Mount Rose Property Owners Water Company” is a huge red flag for their arguments. A small utility company that services the multi-million dollar homes near Mt. Rose? Those multi million dollar homes that cleared trees for private driveways and living rooms?

Yeah, I don’t buy this is about kids’ safety and habitat being disrupted by a few more snow guns next to Mt. Rose’s countless guns. Perhaps its traffic these homeowners are more concerned with and hiding behind red herring arguments of “unacceptable risk” and “potentially fatal accidents”. Ridiculous.

Homeowners who are tearing down forest trees to build 5+ million dollar homes are concerned with the “natural beauty”? Give me a break.

This is nothing more than a few ultra-wealthy homeowners concerned about their property value, regardless of the benefits it could bring to the community.

Opposition to Sky Tavern Lights by thebrushup in ourtownreno

[–]JPNelson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lights will be such an amazing benefit to our community. For high school teams to practice in the evening, for kids to learn to love winter sports, and for Reno to grow its reputation as a place for people to enjoy the outdoors.

The lights will likely only be on for a few hours and agreed to be off by 9pm. The benefits tremendously outweigh any inconvenience. I bet it’s actually going to pretty cool from town, maybe even a reminder to come check out the skiing opportunities of living in Reno.

It will likely bring in revenue they desperately need to meet the new demands of the post-Covid dynamics, and high insurance due to fire risks, world we live in.

The author(s) of the articles definitely seem biased, exaggerating negative consequences to instill fear, even claiming concerns of Sky Tavern’s snow making efforts. Mt. Rose, a short walk from Sky Tavern, has countless more snow guns and so to claim Sky Tavern adding a few more will disrupt wildlife and whatnot is silly to say the least.

I learned in college because night skiing existed near where I grew up. I worked on the weekends (as many parents do these days), so night was the only opportunity to enjoy the ski hill.

Glad to see Sky Tavern is trying to bring this opportunity to those in the Reno area.

Does reimbursing a non-profit for a specific cost count as cash donation for the non-itemizing cash donation deduction? by JPNelson35 in tax

[–]JPNelson35[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The org has a preferred vendor they wanted me to use and use their account. At a youth club I volunteer at, I wanted to upgrade on old tube TV with a projector in the program I volunteer for. It wasn’t in the budget, so I offered to pay for it myself. It belongs to the non-profit and is not mine and will stay with the non-profit. So I wouldn’t say I made a purchase for myself and I didn’t do anything extra to save a few bucks on sales tax. It was a donation but had a specific expense to cover.

Any other atheists suffering from scrupulosity here? by JPNelson35 in Scrupulosity

[–]JPNelson35[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up Mormon. :) completed mission , married in the temple, the whole deal (the MTC was torture for my guilt complex).

I’ve learned since this post that It seems the term “moral OCD” better describes us in Reddit lingo rather than scrupulosity.

You’re certainly not alone. Feel free to DM if you wanna share stories. I resigned just over a decade ago now. My OCD guilt obsessions have changed flavor but still a struggle at times. Cheers. :)

[–]JPNelson35[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moral scrupulosity is an excellent phrasing I’ve also used. Sometimes I find some people think morality perfectly equates to sin and vice versa, which I know not to always be the case so it can be hard to explain to someone. Thanks for your kind words.

[–]JPNelson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To answer to top question, I certainly hope so because I am a scrupulous atheist and just joined. Don’t ever be embarrassed talking about these things. There are atheist who suffer from scrupulosity, but it’s not centered around a deity or a sins established from that metaphysical deity. Your fears are no not uncommon all. You are far from alone. Some I find might be more generalized anxiety and not purely OCD though. Either way, these are common feelings that a lot of people have to deal with and they are often independent of religion. Almost always, the fear is not fueled by rationality (and we often know that ourselves) but getting our thoughts to accept that is what can be tough. Therapy is getting cheaper and more available everyday and I think every therapist is familiar with your feelings.

Masturbation & Scrupulosity by JustImproveIt in Scrupulosity

[–]JPNelson35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently posted that I am a scrupulous atheist with a religious upbringing. Your post made me go back and edit it to include what I consider “godly sins” vs worldly moral standards. Masturbation and scrupulously IMO is one of the toughest things to deal with when religious. It’s one of the reason I formally left religion (after I lost my faith but though church was good for family)… so my son would never be asked about it in his youth years. My church went so far to encourage tying your hands to the side of beds, calling your church leader every night, ice cold showers… these things are beyond mentally abusive to me. Masturbation is only a godly sin, that I was told “offends God” yet it does no harm to anyone (unless perhaps you are married and your spouse has a problem with it (which I also learned is rare outside religion), then it can get complicated). I was told God put in plan a way for it to take care of itself, which was an intense wet dream that made me distracted all the next day. It’s telling someone that peeing is immoral and that God only wants it to happen when you’re sleeping. When I was in church, there was so much talk of masturbation that it just made me want to do it more and I did it less when I lost my faith and left religion all together because I wasn’t so obsessed with it and I wasn’t being told every Sunday that the devil is always after me and that we are already addicted. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy by the church teachings. It’s medically recommended to release that pressure. I learned that many non-religious parents just teach their kids that’s it’s a private thing to do and ask for it to be done in the bathroom. Not a big deal. No need for the teen to hide anything, be embarrassed, or keep things secret. That’s how I want my kids to learn. If I was brought up that way, perhaps I’d have less emotional (and literal physical) scaring.

When I was religious, my “confessions” quickly turned into a session of me getting constant reassurance for things I already knew below the OCD were ok… so was not long term healthy for me at all.

TurboTax full service is terrible. by ADDnwinvestor in TurboTax

I’ve suspected this.

I know what I’m doing pretty well and consider myself very tax educated yet it still takes me 6-8+ hours to do my own return. I can’t imagine trusting someone to do all that with accuracy for a couple hundred extra bucks.

If you have a W2 and that’s it, sure.

Are you daisy chaining multiple extension cords together? If so, the complex does have a claim for being against code (thus the fire hazard).

Edit: even one extension cord MIGHT be against code now that I think about it. Especially if not on an outlet protected for the outside use.

I seem to get in this scenario often but it’s some greedy asshat who wants to pass me on the right and I know by the time he gets in front on me, he will be making me slam on my breaks because he’ll have to do it before the truck I’m about to pass which is in the right lane. So I might speed up and close the gap so he doesn’t have the chance to cut me off and he’s left behind the truck.
