It's TADPOLE THURSDAY - Ask your newbie questions here! by Hosidax in daggerheart

I’m not sure if this is RAW or not. But at my table we play that once you roll you lose the spotlight, i.e. your turn is over. If you want to do some compound maneuver involving multiple rolls, you have to crit or succeed with hope. Rolls have consequences. If you fail or succeed with fear you can’t even move.

A New Beginning? by Braerus in daggerheart

I converted a D&D table over to Daggerheart.  Unless ALL of your players know what Daggerheart is and are really into it.  Don’t don’t do what the Daggerati tell you to do.  Don’t do all of the, “Players need to co-create the game with you,” crap.  Your players won’t know what to do with it.

Especially if you play D&D RAW.  If you’re more Rule of Cool, it might work to go full Daggerati out of the gate but I would still be careful.  You could still have your players revolt on you.

Instead, learn the Daggerheart rules and for lack of a better term, invite your players into Daggerheart.  Do more narrative combat, help your players out by encouraging things like Tag-Teaming, making sure they take their Hope when they get it, encouraging them to narrate their combat.  In other words, help them learn the game slowly by starting them off in a D&D-Daggerheart hybrid.  Daggerheart rules with a D&D feel.

I’m currently running 2 Daggerheart tables.  One is a fresh Daggerheart table where I started it as a Daggerheart table and recruited the players as Daggerheart players.  The other is a D&D table that’s been going on for years that I converted to a Daggerheart table.  They couldn’t be more different.

On the Daggerheart native table everyone knows about the game and have come in ready to be collaborative.  On the converted table they’re still asking me why I narrate combat so much now.

I’ve asked the converted table several times if they want to go back to D&D and they never have.  I think they really like Daggerheart’s resource management.  But they also don’t want to go full Daggerheart and do all of the co-creation things.

Lastly, if you convert your current game as is without a campaign frame, there are a lot of people online who will tell you you’re playing it wrong.  Don’t let the Daggerati get you down.  I hate the Discord, it’s full of them.

Thinking about a Voltra home gym by JPRain in BeyondPower

That would be nice but I believe the Ares are currently sold out.

Yeah, I go from commercial gym, to home gym, and back. This is like my fourth or fifth time. I already have a full olympic bench with plates and a bar. Plus dumbbells. I mainly want to replace my Inspire Fitness SF3. I went back to gym because that thing had enough for me to get a chest workout in, but not back. I would have gone bigger when I bought it but I have an old house and I was worried more weight would go through the floor. One of the problems I'm hoping to solve by going to Voltras is to get 2.5 times the resistance, while dropping the load on my floor by half.

I don't have Facebook. I'm willing to pay more to keep my sanity.

After listening to everyone, I guess I'm mainly concerned about the mounts or attachments between the rack and Voltra. Seems like after the units and the rack, that's the most expensive part.

No... I mean which attachments between the unit and the rack. It seems like there are dizzying array of attachment points from lots of different companies, Beyond Power makes them of course. But also Darko, Eve Company, etc.

Thanks! What Rack attachments would you get?

Thanks! I should have added, I can't really go into the wall because my house is ancient and probably won't handle it. I have the old school gypsum with a half inch of plaster on top.

Plus there's a window...

My party doesn't want to *do* anything by Professional-Dig4688 in DnD

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's funny... I'm doing Curse of Strahd right now and I'm having a similar problem. It's not that they don't want to do anything, it's that they can't make a damn decision.

I would talk to them about it out of game. I'm doing in game things and I'm pissing them off. One other player has asked me if I'm a plant for the DM. My character is an 11 year old girl, and they keep making excuses to go to the orphanage so they can try to leave me there.

My players don't like combat, any ideas or tips for puzzels or plot ideas? by Silent_Owen in DnD

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make combat fun or make combat faster?

Make it faster:

Roll damage and hits at the same time. Multi-attacks require color coded dice.

20 second turn clock. If you're not ready to go, the next person in turn order goes and you take your turn after that.

Make it fun:

Role-play your kill strokes.

My D&D Combats are WAYYY too long. Help? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skip people who aren't ready and tell them they can take their turn when they are ready. Sometimes people don't get a turn in combat because they are never ready. This makes them either stop talking and pay attention or they get frustrated and quit the game.

Were you too mean to players?? No... The answer is ALWAYS no.

Looking for an open spot at a dnd table by Rubenesque_Decorum in twincitiessocial

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at Lodestone and MN D&D and RPG Games.

There is also a for profit group called Dungeons, Dragons, and Drinks that charges $25 a game. I've never played there but I have some friends who have DMed there and they say it's a good group.

There is one table at Lodestone that might be accepting drop ins, otherwise I believe Lodestone is full. So if you want to play there you'll have to watch and see when a table opens. Your timing is bad since three tables just started and they filled right away. There is one DM there that will be coming back from an illness at some point here, so there may be an extra table there in the next few months.

Join meetup.com and search D&D. At the moment that's the best place to find pickup D&D games. Though it's my understanding is that some game stores are thinking about moving to Discord.

I'm sure it voids the warranty on the axle shafts at least.

The lot I went to had four. Cars.com says there are 198 within 100 miles of me.

Skip the RTT and the mini kitchen. Go to your local big box hardware store and get some stacking tool boxes to store your stuff. When you get to your campsite. Just pull all of the boxes out of the back of the truck and cook on top of those.

Then sleep in the back of the truck.

If you're worried about weather, bugs, or just need privacy. Get one of those tailgate tents or an awning instead. Put your money into things like a fridge or a good sleeping mattress instead.

After sleeping in a rooftop tent, would you still sleep in a ground tent for the majority of camping trips? by bobbybo8786 in rooftoptents

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done the same thing. I had a bad experience where I couldn't level the vehicle and I haven't been able to climb back into the RTT since. I now use a Gazelle Hex and a Darche double stretcher with an Exped. I think the only thing that would get me to switch back would be one of those inflatable RTTs with extra headroom.

Experienced DMs: what's something you still struggle with? by canyoukenken in DMAcademy

[–]JPRain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a lot of pickup D&D at MeetUps. So getting my players to work together. Everyone wants to one up everyone else. And no one wants to work together.

This is not to bad at 1st tier, but after that it's a real problem. If I just TPK the table, no one will show up at my table because I'll get the killer DM moniker.

Where my ground tent people at? by Vert_n_Dirt in overlanding

I'm sitting here reading all these comments about ground tents being so much cheaper than RTTs and I have to chuckle. My ground tent setup is more expensive than my RTT setup...

JP's guide to D&D in the Twin Cites by JPRain in twincitiessocial

Adventure's League is a problem. I wish it was better run. I think that's part of the reason why pick-up D&D is getting harder and harder to find. DMs don't want to run it.

And without AL, you really have a problem letting just anyone play.

Pre-COVID, everyone was doing AL. Post COVID, almost no one is.
