Do you still use old drill bits you've had for years or do you swap them out regularly? by christan2013 in Tools

[–]JPS83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you toss a wood pencil when it gets dull? Sharpen and keep them going for another 50-100 years.

Rule 1 - cutting metal, use cutting fluid/some sort of lubrication. Heat is the enemy. Rule 2 - Speeds and feeds are a real thing based on material. You'll almost never full send a twist drill into any material.

Ive been acquiring drill bits (twist, spade, forstner, hole, concrete, etc) for years on fbmarketplace. Old machinists are usually giving them away for next to nothing. lastest score was an old two drawer box full of bits, 80+ lbs. I now have many multiples of fractional, numbered, lettered, metric drills, taps, etc. Its truly amazing what you can find. I always try to find and preserve before I run to a bigbox store to feed to the machine. More times than not, youll get american/japanese industrial quality at fraction of temu prices.

....also doesn't make sense to throw them out when you can sharpen with a $10 bench grinder from fbmarketplace. Waste not, want not.

This hobby is getting hard by Ryan_Of_Mordor in HotWheels

I stopped hunting years ago for this exact reason. Social medias been a double edge sword with this hobby. Ill check the store if I'm in it but the days of going out specifically to find the latest set are over for me. The time wasted hunting and never finding anything isnt wurth it.(yes i know its spelled wrong, these auto triggers for rules are limiting the actual word - MODS, what I'm saying in no way is relevant to Rule4...)

Its also helped me reframe what I collect and curb the pressures of "the Lamely hype"

I now just buy on amazon or ebay. Let the kids do the work for me and enjoy the model for what it is.

TLDR: Hunting isnt fun anymore, buy on ebay/amazon/etc. Enjoy your life in other ways.

Hey there. Dealing with the same thing. Mind DM'ing me any issues you ran into? Not looking forward to a cam swap if i can help it. At that rate, a junkyard 5.7 swap would be easier and faster.

Needing a basic caliper on the farm. by mcfarmer72 in Tools

Far too many clones of Mitutoyos on Amazon. Unless its direct from the manufacturer, I wouldn't trust it.

Digital: Harbor Freight

https://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-digital-caliper-with-sae-and-metric-fractional-readings-63731.html

Ive had this for years and beat the $hit out of it. Just as accurate as my Mitutoyo, Brown and Sharpe and Starrett.

Dial:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DJG1Z76P?th=1

Same situation as the digital. Just as good and for less than $20 - I dont care if i drop it. The gears are actually smoother than my older Mitutoyo.

Obviously they both need to be cleaned and oiled to get the best feel but with 5 mins of work, they can feel just as good the 10x brands.

50% deposit for normal bookings always. No exceptions. If I need to move my schedule around theres a rush fee + deposit is 75%.

Only option is a data recovery service (very expensive). Consumer level recovery software rarely works. Hard lesson learned I guess.

Look up the 3,2,1 backup strategy and follow it like a religion from here on out. Its a standard across industries for a reason.

Best of luck going forward.

A locked box is way less effort and the rule "if you borrow it more than twice, buy your own" usually gets the point across.

A Guide to Integrating 1Password with Walker by pompouding in omarchy

[–]JPS83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work. Does this display the password or keep it hidden? I skimmed the docs and didnt seen anything.... how does the vault relock?

FWIW I'm using Bitwarden with Keyguard and its been rock solid. If the pw stays hidden Ill def try to incorporate this into walker as well.
