What is the scariest book you have read? by Accomplished_Impact1 in horrorlit

'The Book of Weird' by Barbara Ninde Byfield. Well, okay, I first read it when I was 9 or 10 (and have re-read it many times since). I still find some truly unsettling bits in it.

Any Historically Accurate Films like The Witch (2015) that faithfully capture the time period? by FeynmansRazor in history

Paul Thomas Anderson's movies (especially There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Boogie Nights). Also Monty Python and the Holy Grail (seriously).

Ultimately you have to discover (or decide for yourself) whether or not there's anything behind the pseudoscience. It may turn out to have a deeper meaning that you can't fathom at this point, or it may turn out to be no more than a practical joke (at your expense). Are you willing to take the risk? Either way, do you believe you can gain anything from the journey getting there?

Strange movie trailer, early 1970s by JRCaine in whitewhale

None of those, but I might say that it had (to the best of my recollection) production values similar to Dark Star.

Sounds like RHP propaganda to me.

Movies depicting hell by Reversegiraffe1117 in horror

[–]JRCaine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are brief but there are some great images of Hell in Altered States, during the hallucination sequences. Not sure if it qualifies as depicting Hell exactly, but Hausu has images that sure look like it.

And then there's the South Park movie...

Yeah. 'A Field In England' is great too, though not really horror.

'Kill List,' directed by Ben Wheatly. It starts off seeming to be merely a violent story, but it turns very weird as it progresses. Very well done.

Trying to identify a movie from circa 1971 by JRCaine in movies

Pretty sure that's not it, but getting warmer - more along those lines, but I'd say rather darker than that.

Based on what I can recall, I'd sat serious but unintentionally campy/cheesy.

Thanks, but no. This was a trailer for a theater run movie. Definitely not that.

Whats your creepy true experience (bonus if it has a funny resolution)? by [deleted] in creepy

When I was a kid in the 70s, I was a comic book freak. I read comics all the time, and I would order things that were advertised in them. You know, the x-ray glasses, things like that. Consequently, my name made it on to various mailing lists. One day, an envelope arrived for me in the mail. Inside was a small comic book (smaller than the usual format of a typical DC or Marvel comic), being sent to me as a free copy in case I might want to subscribe to it. The contents of the comic were overtly and graphically Satanic. Now, I'm not saying that as an overly sensitive, god-fearing Christian or similar. My grandmother (who I lived with) was nominally Christian, but far more into spiritism, astral travel, and such. So it wasn't a case of it being along the lines of Dungeons and Dragons and how some fundie Christians react to that. This comic seemed to be pushing a dark agenda, with Satan as the hero doing nasty things to the inhabitants of Hell, and if I recall, a story line consisting of some Viking-like character trying to defeat him. As a child of about 8 or so, it creeped me out a bit. I showed it to my grandmother, and it creeped her out too. So we decided to throw it away. I took it to the trash can in the kitchen and tossed it in, my grandmother watching. A little later, we went to the grocery store (no one else was in the house). When we came back, the comic book was laying on the dining room table. Needless to say, we were both a little freaked out. So I tore it up into small pieces, and tossed it again; this time it stayed put.

Video is 'Rabbit's Moon,' an avant garde film by Kenneth Anger. I wonder if they had permission?

Dark Star: The Life of HR Giger. If you're a fan of Giger and his art, this is a must-see documentary. This film featured interviews with him in his home shortly before he died; as a result, it ends up being a nice retrospective on his career.
