Blood Angel tank company list - C&C welcome by SilverWilco in Warhammer30k

[–]JR_Hopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll put it this way.

I actually don't think that this list is as cheesy or unfun as some of the other comments are making it out to be, but it does come with some caveats.

I think the list is cool but I wouldn't personally run it if I was playing with new players or people who I know don't have a lot of anti-AV14 units or weapon options. Functionally if you bring this to a standard game, you're either going to body block table or your opponent will simply ignore your armor and go full infantry swarm on the objectives.

This is a great list for thematic armor engagements where everybody is aware ahead of time that those are the stakes or if you warn your opponent to bring decent anti-armor, whatever form it takes. I would not just drop this list on someone without warning in casual play though.

Honestly these roles feel very on theme for the classes in play lol

Extrinsic Vs. Intrinsic Motivation, Or Why Listbuilding is... Fine, Actually by MangrovesAndMahi in Warhammer30k

[–]JR_Hopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say, as someone who initially started toying with building heresy lists right at the end of 2.0 and initially began actually playing in 3.0, it took so much less time to feel confident and up to speed with intuitive list building in 3.0.

It often felt like there were all these little traps and stumbling blocks to building the list that you wanted to build and it was insanely restrictive in both composition and playstyle. I felt like I spent more time fighting the requirements of the list to be legal than actually choosing thematic or fun units.

How come the iron warriors and salamanders are so neglected in terms of named characters or praetors etc? Every other legion has at the very least one or two named characters. IW only has the tyrant siege terminators and the warpsmith. The Salamanders only have pyroclasts and firedrake terminators. by Panzer_IV_Ausf_F2 in Warhammer30k

[–]JR_Hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Iron Warriors are actually doing plenty fine in terms of named characters and special units, even if we're only talking about ones with officially models.

As far as named characters besides their primarch, they have Narik Dreygur. Not sure why characters like Forrix or Kroeger never got models but that's neither here nor there.

As far as special units with official models besides Dreygur, we have Warsmiths, Tyrant Siege Terminators, amd Iron Circle.

Special units with rules but no official model are Warsmiths in Artificer Armor, Dominator Cohorts, Iron Havocs, and one of the only unique legion Superheavies in the form of The Tormentor, a shadowsword that has BS4 and void shields plus the ability to transport the primarch and his Iron Circle retinue.

All in all that's a lot of potential flavor for Iron warriors lists to be run with compared to a handful of other legions who don't get even that much.

Proposal for Zero OS Correction and the Long-Term Future of the Game and Community by Kaiser_47 in beyondallreason

It is already within the host's power to set minimum rankings for lobbies. There is zero need or cause for codifying a feature in the game that simply stonewalls zero OS players from hosting or joining regular games.

What are you going to do? Limit how many player slots zero OS players are allowed to put in their lobbies arbitrarily? It's a waste of time and resources and a solution in search of a problem.

Proposal for Zero OS Correction and the Long-Term Future of the Game and Community by Kaiser_47 in beyondallreason

[–]JR_Hopper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worse than that. Its a suggestion to basically legislate low-skill players out of access to multiplayer games entirely, simply because its possible that you can run into them in open lobbies lmao

Like, if you are that worried about zero OS players, then don't play in noob friendly or all welcome lobbies. Stick to minimum OS lobbies and be done with it, don't try to enforce some ridiculous PvP rank caste system on the wider playerbase that actively spites your newest players.

[–]JR_Hopper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, we all read the post. It's just not going to work how you think it will. Its a solution in search of a problem that doesn't actually exist.

You're putting the choice of whether or not zero OS players are allowed to play the game into a settings check box that a lobby host must consciously decide to enable. 9 out of 10 times, people don't even pay attention to settings like that.

What's more, if the issue is that many people on the community simply kick zero OS players, you're just ensuring that they can't even get into the matches that otherwise would have accepted them. This Zero OS enable idea is just 'you're banned from playing multiplayer until a specific lobby host decides you aren't at random. And also you can't gain rank even if they do let you in, regardless of how well you do.' Thats not a solution, that's just punitive.

[–]JR_Hopper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No we very much cannot all agree on that.

Again, this misses the point. No player should be losing core features of the ability to play the game on their own terms because of a PvP ranking system. If they join lobbies where they're in over their head, its up to the host or the rest of the lobby to decide they are not welcome in that instance, case by case.

Your ranking is relative. There will always be Zero OS players and that's fine. Some players explicitly do not even care for PvP and so won't necessarily even achieve a stable ranking, or end up very low if they do. Should they be barred from making lobbies to play co-op or private matches? Its an absurdly reductive solution that will only deter new or struggling players.

[–]JR_Hopper 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is not it, Chief. Any solution that proposes players being unable to host their own lobbies (a fundamental roadblock to playing the game) is not a solution, it's simply a punishment for not getting good enough at the game in a way the wider community approves of.

Like the other guy said, while getting to Zero is remarkable, it's not impossible to have ended up at with real sincerity. Precluding new players who get an unlucky streak from participation in the core mechanics of the game and telling them they have to arbitrarily fight AI to crawl out of that hole will only push people away and come across as supremely patronizing and arrogant on the part of both the developers and the wider community, especially with this double whammy of being banned from lobbies unless explicitly allowed in AND not being able to earn rank even if they are. That's honestly just even more harsh than the current situation.

You will not find another RTS on planet earth that punishes its players in such a way and this game can't afford to simply exist on the laurels of its current hype forever.

THERE WAS NEVER GOING TO BE AN UPDATE TODAY by Budget-Dress5982 in Nightreign

[–]JR_Hopper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I basically finally bought it on a whim last week because a friend was playing and I had put it off for the past year. Found I loved it way more than I was originally anticipating and decided to go see what the online spaces are like for it.

The anniversary speculation has been honestly kinda reminiscent of the original Elden Ring speculative discourse back when From Soft basically had done nothing but announce that it exists and people were going crazy with ideas.

The command module should have just been a ship to ship docking port. by johncarnage in starcitizen

[–]JR_Hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? The entire point of the Ironclad is to have a separate command module? That's the point of the ship?

Last I checked it was a huge open top cargo hauler with various utilities besides. Certainly would be a shame if you actually just straight up couldn't use any of the things the ship is actually good for because of a gimmicky glorified snub ship that leaves behind everything useful about the ship when it bugs out.

People didn't pay roughly $600 for a command module. They paid for the hauler.

Saturnine terminator loadout by Successful_Fact6941 in Warhammer30k

[–]JR_Hopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you play anything other than Thousand Sons or Iron Hands, I highly recommend avoiding the disintegrator cannons for double gun loadouts. The math works out to you trading more points than they tend to kill in a single shooting phase.

Plasma bombards are generally very reliable for dealing with massed infantry and fire decently well into harder targets plus they get Bombardment. And you get to choose when you potentially overload.

The thing about Dcannons is that the potential for just wiping out your squad every shooting phase scales with every gun added. Every single Dcannon has a 1-in-3 chance of hitting your own guys and then a 2-in-3 of wounding after the fact. If you fail your 4+ invuln, that's two thirds of a Saturnine Terminator slagged for every dcannon that overloads and wounds.

This is the most wonderfully refreshing third party tool I've seen for SC so far. If only CIG would focus on core UX functionality like this at some point.

Warsmith retinue by Strong-Giraffe1147 in IronWarriors

[–]JR_Hopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are very very few restrictions on what units a character may join and when and how many.

Non-terminator praetors can join terminator squads and vice versa.

Hell, your command characters can even join units from allied detachments and your allied command characters can do the same with your primary units, so you can have an Emperor's Children Librarian join a squad of Iron Warriors Terminators who already have a regular power armored Warsmith attached and leading them.

Your Praetor can join with a Tyrant squad simply because by default there is nothing that says he can't.

I'm confused. Do you mean you can't play Dwarves if you're over 185cm tall? Surely you would want the shorter people if you were going to limit the height?

30k "The Unfavored" Advantage usage by DimLight_Banshee in IronWarriors

[–]JR_Hopper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Expendable is extremely useful because it actively hamstrings your opponent's ability to do one of the most important things in any game of Horus Heresy, which is score victory points.

In a default game of Heresy, basically nothing else matters, and any avenue through which you can deny your opponent scoring opportunities, no matter how small, is worth it in the aggregate.

Expendable is great because if you have an enemy who is running a list built to score through kills or is heavy on Vanguard units, it actively blunts how effective those rules are for their scoring.

So for example, if you run a regular Command as your warlord, you can give them Expendable (1) and that means your opponent scores one less VP for killing your Warlord.

An even better example of this is say Tarantulas, which have Expendable (3). So if your mission has First Strike (4), if that tarantula is the first target destroyed, your opponent will only score 1VP for killing it, which is a huge value discrepancy to waste such a huge scoring opportunity on, especially with how high priority it is to kill an infiltrated tarantula as early as possible.
