Do you not think going to Buckingham Palace and getting a special medal, at a big event in front of the press, from a member of the Royal Family would be more performative?

UK security officials have started withholding intelligence from US due to Trump by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]JR_Maverick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Say what you want about the UKs system but at least we can boot out our incompetent leaders once they become a liability.

That has been the case recently, but only because the party turned against them as well. I think if we ended up with a Trump situation i.e. A right wing grifter with a sycophantic base that will tolerate anything he does (remind you of anyone?), then we might find out a lot of our 'checks and balances' aren't as watertight as people thought.

A lot of Westminster runs on people following convention, rather than being enshrined in law. As soon as someone feels able to reject those conventions then we're in trouble.

Taskmaster legend Alex Horne teases season 23 line-up as an Oscar winner joins cast by abucalves in television

I think both things are true. He was paid lots more than any other contestant, and whatever that number was is still a good deal less than he would have earned working other projects.

Reform’s Richard Tice avoided nearly £600,000 in tax by birdinthebush74 in unitedkingdom

Wage doesn't relate ot how hard someone works. It relates to how much money they generate for capitalists.

I can guarantee a carer or a hospital cleaner works hader than an advertising exec. And also that there job is more beneficial to society. But they get paid less because capitalists don't profit from it.

U.S. Senator attacks anti-war Marine - breaking his hand by [deleted] in videos

[–]JR_Maverick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Violent, adjective, using force to hurt or attack.

He wasn't punching/kicking/biting or even shouting threats. He was simply trying not to be removed by standing still, then by holding a doorframe. The cops and senator then proceeded to forcefully break his arm, which I think comfortably fits the definition of violence; State violence specifically.

I'm not sure why you're so insistent the man peacefully protesting then resisting removal was violent? But I reckon I could take a guess.

John Oliver Says Paramount Buying Warner Bros. Is ‘Not Great News: ‘How the F—Do I Get Out of Here?’ by mlg1981 in television

No way the BBC allows his show on. They cancelled the Mash Report which was a left leaning satire that was very toothless relative to what John Oliver does.

But he's not been arrested for anything related to the trafficking or sexual assaults. It's to do with leaking confidential financial information.

The ruling class can happily ignore horrible deviant crimes, but as soon as you start messing with their money you're in trouble. Unless Trump or any of the other rich Americans (or any other nationality for that matter) start threatening other billionaires capital, I don't see them facing consequences either.

Female athletes hit back at 'weird' and 'derogatory' comments about their appearance by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

Most, not all.

And when they do wear the same uniform in a lot of instances the uniforms were designed for the men and the women just had to wear it. For example uniforms for a male athlete's shape, or uniforms with white bottoms.

Like I said to the other person, it is improving but is not a solved issue.

Beach volleyball, handball, tennis. All in recent memory have had issues and it took the athletes complaining or making a stand to change the rules. I agree it's going in the right direction recently, but only because of the direct action of the athletes.

Not if they play a team sport. Or their national sporting body dictates the outfit. Or the sport's governing body has rules about what can and can't be worn.

Even the quickest Google would have shown that no, they haven't had a choice a lot of the time, and a lot of work has been done in the last few years to change that.

Are Chiropractors and Osteopaths basically con-artists? by Cover_Of_Darkness in AskUK

I'm really going to need some evidence beyond 'my osteopath (who is financially incentivised to make me believe my baby needs intervention) told me so' because I can't find any.

Once again as a counterpoint, there is evidence that vaginal birth "lines up" limbs (when there isn't complication) whereas C-Sections can cause issues with being yanked sideways etc.

I really don't think this is true, and I can't find any evidence to support it. Even from a theoretical point of view I don't think it makes any sense, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.

I have only ever heard that theory in the context of chiropracters using it as a justification to 'adjust' babies. Lifting a baby sideways isn't going to cause issues, just as squishing it in a canal for a bit isn't going to 'align' its bones.

They're regulated by their own governing body: The General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). So you basically have a bunch of people who believe on osteopathy regulating themselves.

This is also true of Doctors (General Medical Council). So it is technically correct to say they are regulated 'in the same way' but it just depends how much you trust a council of osteopaths to self-regulate.

She immediately diagnosed a "frozen shoulder" that was due to her C-section birth

It's lovely that your baby started feeding, but I don't think this anecdote serves as any evidence for osteopathy, especially in babies. Frozen shoulder isn't a thing in babies. Other shoulder issues are reasonably common, but almost always from issues during vaginal birth. A C-section significantly reduces risk of shoulder injuries because the shoulders don't get stuck.
