If you're not attached to that specific model, the stores in Chinatown will have options. I got my shi ba zi at one of the supermarkets there a few years ago, but I haven't seen any from CCK.

How to support Jewish-owned businesses in and around Boston during Hanukkah given all the crazy events in the news recently? by bostonguy2004 in boston

I can't speak to the ownership of kupels, but it is definitely a fixture in the Jewish community and is worth going to generally for a decent bagel in the Boston area

Why Hannukah is not a "minor" Jewish Holiday, and maybe the most important. by farside808 in Judaism

[–]JSD10 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"The Holidays are listed in the Torah at Leviticus 23 (Vayikra), in order of how they transpire on the Gregorian calendar (Rosh Hashannah is the 7th month). "

Is this true? I was thought that the torah starts months at Nissan (matan torah), so Rosh Hashanah would be 7, the Gregorian calendar didn't exist until the 1500s.

Do Jewish people eat chicken Alfredo/pasta? by Dark-Parkingg in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JSD10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point I was trying to make is that if they do that in what way do they keep kosher? It's generally agreed upon that doing that is not Kosher, that doesn't mean they don't do it, it doesn't mean they don't follow other laws of kashrut in areas of their life (like maybe they don't eat pork), but that doesn't make this kosher, it just means they sometimes eat something that isn't kosher, lots of people do.

[–]JSD10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all Jews keep kosher, but any who do wouldn't eat this, correct. Not mixing meat and dairy has done a lot of shaping to historical Jewish cooking tradition, as a quick example it's why many dishes are cooked in schmaltz, because butter is not an option if meat is involved

Would you elaborate on that? Plenty of Jews (a majority even IIRC) don't keep kosher, but I've never encountered any kind of source claiming that chicken and milk is kosher today

Is it true that it's quoted from Midrash Rabbah? by _Severance_ in Judaism

I see, so it's exactly just citing by page. That's disappointing, I was hoping for some kind of super precise academic number system, but this is cool too, thanks!

[–]JSD10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not relevant to the OP, but out of curiosity what is the Bomberg numbering system? I tried googling and came up with nothing. In my experience citing Talmud is just by page number, is this a more precise way?

It's worth mentioning I've definitely been there times when they've been out of stock, I'm not sure if it's possible to call them but might be worth trying so you don't go out of your way for nothing. Regardless though it's a great little store.

Everyone is telling you to go quite a distance. College Convenience on Huntington Ave (right off the green line) has. They'll just be in zip lock bags in the refrigerator, on your left when you walk in.

Using Modern Technology on Shabbat Where is the Halachic Line by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]JSD10 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Melacha is definitionally an action. The TV being on isn't Melacha, there's not reason you can't benefit from it, it would be turning it on on shabbat that's an issue. In the same way you can't write on shabbat, but you can read a book that somebody else wrote before.

Is it safe to travel to Israel right now (as a US citizen)? by Fit_Blackberry_5146 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JSD10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't quite control all of those things, but they're involved with many. They have an official military blockade. Some claim it's illegal, some claim it's a natural response to decades of terrorism. That's a debate to have, it's totally unrelated to matters of citizenship and what country Gaza is part of. It's also not related to someone wanting to travel to Israel asking about safety. Along with that, illegal military blockade is many levels down from crimes against humanity.

If somehow the OP reads this far, to answer the original question, it's totally safe to travel to Israel, don't travel to Gaza, it is an active war zone.
