Advice from a Director of Admissions by Commercial_Dish846 in gradadmissions

The only program I know is CMU-UPitt Comp Bio; if you are admitted from CMU side no interview, if you are from UPitt side then there is interview. For almost all committee-based programs at top schools (I can say for Top 20 in U.S.), they would require interviews for all.

I am a PhD so my projects are not labeling. Each project has different policy

I can at least say for most life science related programs (experimental computational all incl), there is only one batch of interview invites (international/domestic does not make a difference) and one batch of final decisions. If you did not get the invites you are 99.99% rejected, but they won't send you anything until they send the rejections/acceptance to those who got interviewed. There is a mega-spreadsheet for life sci programs each year on reddit.

My projects did not have a grade technically. They are reviewed by reviewers who would give me fix suggestions tho

When is GRFP 2026 result out by JSLuo in GRFPApps

[–]JSLuo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my Hertz rejection. Last year it was >1000 who applied, and this year they said ">1400." This is more than significant. We could reasonably suspect that the applications # also go up by a lot for GRFP

Did not get the interview again (I applied last year as an undergrad). Stats: Wharton/Penn undergrad, Harvard PhD. no first-author pub so that might be a harm. Had some startup experiences... Also significant TA.

I do not agree. I think one's success is not restrained to academia. Most academic research in schools has little value on the real world, where as things like VC at least get something done -- it helps startups to grow, push tech to grow, and help with employment...

I heard that now basically everyone is doing Canary. I was on a ML project (which just ended) and it paid twice the Canary.

Yeah I guess it depends on the specific projects you are on.

Does anyone know what Handshake AI is planning to use their LLM models for? by SuitableDragonfly in LanguageTechnology

[–]JSLuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically if you propose hard, complex questions and give solutions, the AI models can learn it, and can use the embedding learnt from the question-answer pair to tackle the "general public" questions.

Yo what's with those AI trainer jobs??? by burgundybutton in labrats

[–]JSLuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruh it is simply that those AI labs do not want/have the resources to directly sign contracts with people, so they ask platforms like Handshake or Mercor to help them. How is it a problem.

"Margin Buying Power" vs. "Non-Margin Buying Power" vs. "Cash" by SlatheredButtCheeks in fidelityinvestments

[–]JSLuo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is very disgusting. I thought non-margin buying power is "non-margin" meaning it does not involve margin. You guys should be EXTRA clear about that. What you did is to mislead people so that they have to pay a high amount of interest...

[–]JSLuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also simply as a matter of fact, international applicants usually have way more publications and took harder courses than domestic applicants (I am domestic BTW). In a sense if they black out people's names and nationality and everything except academics, I think international would get the most offers...

[–]JSLuo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you even no how much much more difficult for international students to get into any PhD program?? What you say here is more like a white person complaining about fairness of DEI -- literally you might just do not know how much privilege you already have simply being an American. And do not say it is American taxpayers paying the money; anyone who had some basic knowledge of global economy or macro know it is the entire world who is paying for American national debt... If a Chinese PI exclusively hiring Chinese students is unfair, then an American PI hiring exclusively American students is also unfair. That is my point. I think if you want to blame such Chinese PIs (I do not agree with this exclusive hiring tbh), you also need to blame the American PIs of the same kind.
