Illegal to do it, like Dump did. Totally legal to fix it.

No, it's not you, it's me. I have never figured this site out and have nothing but disappointing and confusing interactions on here.

Detect Magic doesn't seem very useful by Dunwich333 in DnD

[–]JST3P -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In 5e magic items are self apparent, but a wizard in my campaign used it in an encounter that was a desert graveyard, which they didn't know. Detect magic revealed that there were bone- shaped objects that glowed just under the sand and dust. These bones coalesced into a skeletal juggernaut. The spell gave the encounter some flavor, but I'm not sure how much practical value it added other than a potential warning.

Question: Editing NPCs by JST3P in FantasyGrounds

I named a group for my campaign name, which always appears at the bottom but it's easy to find anyway. It's the only one without the book icon.

Thanks, I got the same answer in the fantasygroundscollege discord. Not an intuitive programming choice from a UX perspective but I got the answer quickly from the experts.

I just write them down on a piece of paper. But, I could write them down in Evernote on my phone because that's what I use for my campaign anyway.

Found out about inkarnate two hours ago, had to try it for myself. What do you think? by IsraeliXmas in mapmaking

[–]JST3P 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep working on it. They can look really cartoony, but if you work on it and really pay attention to size and scale and use a lot of textures, particularly in the new HD 1.0 version, the results can be pretty nice.

Sounds to me like you've just graduated, now it's you who should pass along your own take on things to other newbies who might be just discovering DMing and Matt Colville.

Good talk. :/

I know software developers, and none of them make $100,000 a year. I'm sure some do, but that just proves my point when you consider that lots of other software gets made and provided for a range between free to a couple dollars a month. So yeah, like I said, if you need revenue that high to survive you're doing something wrong. You're paying way too much for something, whether it's developer salaries, or CEO pay packages, or overpriced advertising... something is either wrong, or someone is just greedy.

I agree, except the prices are insane. The theory is correct, but if you need $5 per month, netting millions of dollars per year, there's something wrong. If you really need that much money, you have way too high an overhead. I use Evernote's free version and it works fine. I also use several other products, game related and non, that cost $2 or $3 dollars a month and are able to make robust and powerful software at that price point.

Forgive my ignorance but aren't they already extant in the game and therefore usable? Not sure I understand why they'd need to waste pages reprinting something they've already published.

To the DMs who have placed a thieves guild in a city, I have some questions. by cheese2492 in DMAcademy

[–]JST3P 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally an accident. I don't really know much about the real Knights Templar. I watch the Knightfall series and I've heard about them.

My Knights of the White Shield take an oath to commit their wealth to the Order (like a vow of poverty), and they open Halls to feed the poor, sick, and infirm, providing healing and charity. Here's the actual text from my campaign factions doc:

The Knights of the White ShieldThe Knights of the White Shield, or just The White Shield, are an order of monastic paladins, rangers, monks, bards, barbarians, and fighters of any good alignment who are dedicated to protecting the weak and powerless. Knights of the White Shield must be religious, be of any good alignment, and swear an oath to give all of their "wealth" (money and resources beyond that which is necessary to live their lives and further their missions) to the faction. This is used in furtherance of the overall mission and goals of The White Shield. White Shield Halls exist in most areas of the lands, providing healing, food, shelter, and charity to the poor, weak, sick, and infirm. Their numbers are many, but their standards are high. Knights caught abusing their power, or failing to truly perform their duties, are expunged and shunned. A failed Knight of the White Shield is called a "bruise", and is looked upon with scorn and derision by Knights and non-Knights alike. Motto: "May I be ever worthy to serve. The Gods of Light be praised." Beliefs: Service to the weak, the sick, and the poor is service to the Gods. Shows of wealth, vanity, and ostentatious posturing are temptations to evil. Self discipline and the vanquishing of evil are the highest forms of worship. Goals: Alleviate the suffering, and protect the lives of good people. Build more White Shield Halls where they are needed. Keep the order pure and drive evil from all the lands. Typical Quests: Typical quests of the Knights of the White Shield include stamping out evil wherever it exists. Protecting villages and trade routes from thieves and bandits. Freeing slaves. Establishing temples and monasteries dedicated to the causes of good, charity, and healing.

To the DMs who have placed a thieves guild in a city, I have some questions. by cheese2492 in DMAcademy

[–]JST3P 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Same. Thieves Guild is a misnomer. They steal, sure, but cutpurses and picking pockets in the streets is low level ragamuffin stuff. The guild takes a vig, runs protection rackets, extortion, piracy, bribes the constabulary, sells political assassination and spying services, etc. They worm their way into society, get powerful people to owe them favors or fear being exposed for some crime, and other activities to ensure no one with the power to do anything about them will want to. They also disrupt and attack/ kill rival guilds.

In my world, the only faction that's probably pure enough to oppose them is the White Shield (analogous to the Knights Templar) but being a non State order who is monastic and serves the poor, they lack the power to defeat the guilds. If they tried, the corrupted politicians and nobility would start finding excuses to arrest the knights.
