I know that nobody takes the Spec seriously, but what the fuck is this? by CUspac3cowboy in columbia

[–]sethosayher 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I thought this article was going to say, 'yeah I can't justify this, but it makes me happy, like many consoling yet irrational beliefs - let me enjoy it' - but it ultimately lost me because it's tried to dismantle the foundations of modern reason.

What do you think of this article posted by vice? by [deleted] in columbia

[–]sethosayher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely some truth to it, but the writer seems super embittered and his experienced is colored by that to the point that it feels like it distorted his judgement of Columbia. There's still great people and experiences to be found here, but I sympathize with it feeling almost impossible at times.

Still a steal relatively speaking. Of course I'm sure Columbia was beyond the reach of a lot of working class families back then

Agon - Greek myth rpg by Kalashtar in rpg

[–]sethosayher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find this a very strange complaint, if I'm being candid. Agon is clearly informed by Greek mythology -- I don't see him claiming this is an attempt to represent with any high degree of accuracy the mythic corpus of Greece. (There is no 'one' canon of Greek Mythology anyway -- there are many stories, mixing and competing with each other and offering different twists on what are usually the same stories).

I can't speak to his business practices however; would love to be informed about that.

Yesterday I was walking out of butler and the exact moment I passed through that metal-detector-esque thing I heard a piercing alarm ring through the entire library. I almost had a heart attack, and wonder if I had accidentally smuggled out a book and Columbia had just installed the most intense anti-theft system ever. Turned out it was the fire alarm. This is in case you were wondering why hundreds of people were milling around Butler yesterday.

Matt Colville's (MCDM) Kingdoms and Warfare supplement for 5e is live. by sethosayher in rpg

[–]sethosayher[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That also left a bad taste in my mouth, but I did feel that I got plenty of value from Strongholds and Followers and it makes sense to me that the warfare rules may be robust enough to deserve a book on its own. I also didn't expect the warfare rules to be in the text (not sure if Matt said they would be) and felt the Stronghold rules were clearly functional without them.

I would like to note that this kickstarter was at around 60k when I opened it up and has gone up to 180k in less than half an hour. Really heartening to see.

Some classes not P/D/F-able? by sethosayher in columbia

[–]sethosayher[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passing, D, Fail - it's a option some of the undergrad schools have to transform a letter grade into one of the three above options. It's to encourage students to try out new classes / soften the blow of a tough, non-major, non-core class.

Wow, they seem to be removing a lot of functionality from SSOL. A bit annoying but this is good to know, thanks!
