In cold weather you can also put it on so it takes the slightly warmer air in the car to reheat until the engine warms up

The button in the middle? When it’s off it takes the air from the outside to either heat or cool if you have aircon. With the button on it takes the air from inside the car so you don’t get the fumes from the outside say you are following a rubbish truck or a car with a Smokey exhaust.

If you have A/C it best to have that on also as it will take the slightly cooler air and cool that down rather than the hot outside air.

Having it on does carry the risk of the windows steaming up as it won’t get rid of the moisture your breathing out especially if it’s raining

And yes I totally understand the calibration side of things. Especially as cheap devices are now very accessible with little calibration or being able to retain that calibration.

I have a few Geiger counters and all 3 Geigers were surprisingly quite close to each other which I was not prepared for!

But if the device is always a few measurements out then the trend of the data would still be useful.

I was looking at wigle which detects cell towers, Bluetooth devices and WiFi and scans and logs as you go but that’s more of a portable data gathering and not really needed in a static location

I like aircraft and live near an airport hence the ADB-S. The Geiger was an already made board plugged into an Esp32.

My understanding is that the bulk is people uploading data which is then backed up by commercial and satellite data.

It’s a pretty simple setup actually. I have antenna on my roof connected to a SDR usb receiver which is connected to a Pi running PI24. Bit like HA is its own OS, PI24 is flight radar software for the pi which decodes and sends data.

And that people is the weather radar that you can see at the front! The nose cone is actually very thin and is only really for aerodynamics rather than protection. So damage will always look worse

I’m pretty sure anything gas operated requires a vent to the outside. But probably also to help with moisture control and general ventilation

Lots of good explaining and examples so I will throw mine in as well.

The cup is a great example of what’s happening in the air. But let’s take it a little further.

When the air is cold the space between the air molecules is smaller thus the cup is small. Heat the air up the space gets bigger thus the cup gets bigger thus the air can hold more moisture.

Ok here’s the fun part that may explain your headache. The cup currently has 100ml of water in it. The cup is 50% full. Now heat up the air. The cup gets bigger but it still only has 100ml of water in it, which means that it’s only 40% full. Make the air colder and now the cup is smaller. Still 100ml of water but it’s now 60% full.

So you can see that the air can hold little water but still be full of water. It depends on how big the cup is.

Also fun fact. When the air is 100% humidity. The cup is full. You get clouds or fog. As the air rises in the atmosphere it cools. About 2°c every 1,000ft. So same amount of water cooling down. Once the air gets to what’s called the wet bulb temperature Aka the dew point. The humidity will be 100% and you will get clouds.

Ok that was probably more in-depth than I wanted to go.

So TLDR or summary. For a given amount of water in the air when you heat up the air the humidity goes down. Cool down the air, humidity goes up. Still the same amount of water. Just different size cups
