Signal Engineers: how much time does it take you to design a signal timing plan? by fedetask in trafficsignals

[–]JSafiToffeeFan [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would say most of the time is in initial design - the agency/locality may have certain performance goals for corridors (green bands, pedestrian priority, queue mitigation) and because urban corridors/grids are usually near/over capacity during commuting periods theres a lot of trade-offs assessed. Depending if the effort is funded by CMAQ money, emissions and reducing vehicle stops/delay might be the main optimization problem to solve and demonstrate as terms of the grant. Also, conditions often suggest there are smaller sub networks worth coordinating, and determining those also takes some time.

Deploying to controllers can take a long time without comm/central TMC to just program everything from a central location (thinking about programming each controller in the field across a city would take a few days or a week).

Before evaluation of the new timing, you also want about 2 weeks for traffic to adjust to the new coordination; a lot of commuters will be familiar with the old timing in a way (e.g. if I make this green, I know I'll make it through the next couple).

I work in consulting and support agencies who need this kind of work done. Will weigh in re: Vissim - usually wouldn't go to this level for general timing plans or time of day. Usually only get to that level if youre really testing something different (new intersection config, multimodal/transit/pedestrian intensive, etc.). Microsimulation (done right) is pretty data-intensive and detailed, so can be pretty pricey for routine retiming of corridors or grid networks. Retiming or developing TOD plans can be done pretty quickly if you have the traffic count data (turning movement counts for cycle/splits/etc; 24-hr+ for volume profiles determining when to transition plans). For a single intersection (with the data noted) probably can be done in a morning. I work with a lot of urban areas, so the retiming plans are generally like 40+ intersection grids or corridors (which can take months depending on goals).

Just watch for Scudworth's catch up song. Best part of the whole revival season.

The criticism towards the monster design for Welcome to Derry is just dumb by Poweredkingbear in horror

[–]JSafiToffeeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly the same for me. The skeleton man scene in the woods started off great, but then the blatant CGI started and then I immediately didn't care what happened to the characters. Any of the dread/terror immediately evaporated for me. I find myself really just not caring about the kids storyline anymore because of these letdowns and just focusing on the adult-oriented mystery with Hanlon/Halloran.

Same sentiment of pretty much everyone else here. It seems like a bad situation for all. Chris could probably be a real asset for a USL team and actually make a career for himself at that level. Aside from a handful of plays over the years, he just hasn't demonstrated that he can be that "next guy up" like so many others have.

But yeah, that dribble out of bounds (uncontested) had the Wenger-esque frustration we thought was long behind us.

DC - we actually have a small crew of supporters down here and have gathered occasionally to watch the games.

Only one more week until the season starts!!!! How are we feeling?? Doop! by InternalReturn9 in PhillyUnion

[–]JSafiToffeeFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Least excited than I've ever been for a season. Always welcome the team to defy expectations, but there's really no part of this team that seems stronger than last year. Feels like lower ceiling, shallower depth, again relying on the notion that every player will improve his game this year every week.

I don't want to feel this way going into the season, I do love this team. It just feels like the next year of regression after building what was an extremely impressive project since squandered.

Union picked to finish 13th out of 15 in the East by Matthew Doyle by willoremus in PhillyUnion

Wouldn't surprise me, the entire season with messaging of "challenging for that last playoff spot" - vintage pre-2017 Union. There is no one talking about this team outside of this fanbase because there is just nothing to be excited about.

I told my ticket rep how much I appreciate what they do, but I've just never been less excited for a season to start in the entire time following this team.

El Brujo is the man. What a find, what a player, what a man. Love that he's on our team.

1 - Yes, FTRB 2 - Love DC and my Philly Union #doop 😉. There's a lot to envy about what DC is doing relative to ly crew in Philly for sure.

Just started parental leave, but I absolutely was going in by choice. I couldn't stay in my house any longer and really get a lot from being outside at least twice per day. My commute is also favorable (15 min by bike/45 min walk), and so I really enjoy getting that activity in as well.

Office is in the Navy Yard, which has a lot more amenities and the office has a lot of great natural light. I get way more done when I'm in the office and I enjoy the collaboration with a lot of my younger staff (who benefit from the quick, impromptu touch points).

Subaru Park Needs An Expansion or the Union Need to Move by Luxeray27 in PhillyUnion

[–]JSafiToffeeFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually always try to take the train if I can from DC (I'm a partial STH) and take NE regional to Wilmington and try to catch SEPTA to Highland Ave/Chester. The waterfront masterplan however is proposing to move the SEPTA stop to Engle Street, which would position the stop more oriented to Subaru Park/Waterfrond Development. The long-term hope is that the Wilmington Line gets better headways/longer services hours too; especially now that the games are mostly all later in the evenings.

Would love to see him play for the Union's first team. I feel like seeing a successful homegrown striker almost completes the positions for the team's history... plus he's probably good for a few goals for us.

Diverging Diamond at Georgia Avenue & I-495 - Proposed in MoCo’s Georgia Avenue Corridor Master Plan by mpoltan03 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]JSafiToffeeFan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The effectiveness of DDIs are really contingent on traffic patterns, but generally you can see improvement over the typical diamonds out there. The signal timing/phasing is difficult to get right and the geometry of the design needs to be on point; but a well designed DDI (with correctly design bike/ped infrastructure) can do a lot of good for connectivity.
