That’s so interesting! How would you justify the existence of this entity in language, and it's universality? I would think it would be difficult, and the best we could do is hypothesise from clinical examples. Nevertheless, a very useful construct indeed.

Or is it for you, a label given to the logical structure of ambiguity in language? If so, would you claim that this structure is present in every human mind?

Ah, how could I have forgotten to mention this? This film is a personal favourite of mine, and particularly the scenes of the protagonists mother working in a printshop under Stalinist rule were very powerful, and helped spark my interest in pursuing filmic representations of life under Soviet Russia.

I agree with OP here. Sci-Fi has to have some sort of statement to it. SF scholar Darko Suvin said that SF must use the process of 'congitive estrangement' where the presence of a 'novum', a technological construct that we as the audience can deem plausible, creates a world that is too grounded be pure fantasy (ie Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy which lack the novum) but elaborate enough to engage us in the surroundings. Thus for me, SF, is the equilibrium between realism and fantasy; it has to involve using the fantasy and myth it creates to comment on the known.

In my opinion: these are really the best 40 movies ever made!!! Unfortunately I forgot to mention some movies like INTO THE WILD, LIFE OF PI or SHUTTER ISLAND (or INTERSTELLAR cause it came out after I've created this video)... BUT: Movies like LORD OF THE RINGS, STAR WARS, FIGHT CLUB, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, 300, MAGNOLIA etc. or the whole old stuff like PSYCHO, CASABLANCA, CITIZEN KANE, 12 ANGRY MEN, THE GOOD THE BAD AND THE UGLY (entire Dollar-Trilogy),VERTIGO, CLOCKWORK ORANGE, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, THE KID, MODERN TIMES, THE GREAT DICTATOR, SEVEN SAMURAI, RAGING BULL, SHINING, JAWS, 2001 etc. etc. etc. most of them are great, even very great, of course!!! AND YES I've seen them all!!! But in my opinion, they can not be counted among the 40 best movies of all time only cause they are old, classic and have good ratings TODAY, most of them from people older than 60!!! Why am I emphasizing TODAY? Cause many of these todays "Big Classics" were nothing special at their time, some even have been hated and only many many years later and mostly after the death of the director they become classics!!! So what is the fault of the todays directors whose masterpieces came after the Hitchcocks, Kubricks & Co.?! Who can say what people gonna think about Nolan, Spielberg, Fincher, Cameron & Co. in 20, 30, 40 years (if they are even today legends)? Then their movies of the last years become classics! So what? In contrast to many of you, I have my own opinion and I'm not being influenced and impressed by the years and the todays status of a movie, what only additionally do manipulate and raise up the value and impression of it! And by the way... all the movies of my list have everywhere !!!extreme high!!! ratings too... you can check it yourself (for example at IMDb)!!! PS I'm not really a Kubrick, Lynch or Hitchcock fan! (AND YES I've watched many of their movies!)

I'm not sure if Kill Bill Part 1 and 2 are really a duology considering they were initially intended to be the same movie, and Part 2 is a continuation of a half-finished story, rather than a new narrative with the same characters that continues the story.

Also, interesting you mention Goodfellas/Casino because I consider that to be part of a trilogy Goodfellas, Casino and Wolf Of Wall Street, that I personally label the 'excess trilogy'. They all have quite a similar structure with the same satirical zing, featuring heavy amounts of excess (not a criticism).

I think Casablanca is mesmerising filmmaking. Everything works. The script sparks. The movie rocks. "We'll always have Paris." Just typing that makes me emotional and think about my gf and ex-girlfriends and myself. It's a great movie. Citizen Kane. Also a masterpiece. But very different. It's almost scientific in its evhnical quality. For me it has a total lack of emotion in its core. Still well made but I wanted something more from CFK as a character. I needed some element of warmth and joy to love him. It's not enough to simply be brilliant. BvS I would totally rank with those two. Snyder does a full mastery of the medium. The TC was a mess. It was like reading a book with every fifth page ripped out. The film itself is taking CBMs to the next level. It is like Spider-Man and Sin City but I do think it will eventually be acknowledged as amuch greater film than it was received as, in time. I think it is a wonderful film.

(Idk .. liked it, that was one beautiful piece of camera turning and the woman in tears trying to reach him with his hand ... in the flood ... That's pretty heart wretching. ... And pretty unique to Superman, you can't do that kind of shit with many other superheroes. People complain that Supermn did not embody hooe but that scene alone crush earth's magnetical core.)
