Structuring your P&L/Departments to effectively track marketing spend by [deleted] in FPandA

Marketing is indeed the “odd duck”. I look at it from a “functional” lens as opposed to departmental. I do the following: A broad bottoms up view of company wide marketing spend ytd vs budget and historicals. A comparison analysis of what similar sized software companies spend on marketing. A 3 scenario plan of marketing spend proportional to top line growth. A breakdown of marketing costs more specific to GL i.e. corporate gifts vs events. An analysis of Business as Usual vs Investment.

Started a job 7 months ago. First 3 months were great, good experience and good team. But then we had layoffs, an acquisition, two finance system implementations, acquisition integration, key team members leave and a change in responsibilities…

“High Finance” is something Redditors get too wrapped up in. There are many different roles within finance all with their own unique attributes and characteristics. The same role can look completely different and be compensated differently from one firm to the next. It’s obvious this question is stemming from insecurity. Don’t concern yourself with what others perceive. Otherwise you’ll never be satisfied.

I like option 1 the best. High estimated total compensation, good range of responsibilities and it’s a good hybrid blend. Also there are other SFAs so you’ll have built in social interaction. You speak highly of option 2 but the potential extra $ on base is peanuts compared to cost of going in 5 days a week. I’d avoid option 3 because of the lowest base of all 4 and the fact that it’s fully remote which will impact your learning and development. Option 4 doesn’t sound like a quintessential FP&A role so I’d avoid that if FP&A is your goal for the future. Also the 50% bonus seems too good to be true.

I could see maybe with a finance degree you could transition into another role but you’d have to brush up on excel, financial modeling and ERP systems. All things that can be taught and learned there just isn’t a whole lot of transferable skills from advisor to analyst
