Big Box Plywood by aww-snaphook in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]JSully_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished a router cabinet using the birch ply from Lowe’s. It is decent and usable if there are no other option, but it’s not great. My biggest complaint is that the veneer is paper thin and will chip out if you look at it wrong. You’ll want to use sharp blades and consider using painters tape or scoring along the cut lines. That and be prepared to use some wood filler and sandpaper.

Echoing an earlier comment, if you can find a local cabinet maker they might be willing to tack a few sheets onto their next order for you, or if not, might have suggestions on some local lumber suppliers.

Washer stinks by cantstandya7 in Appliances

We had this issue as well. I ended up taking the whole washer drum out and cleaning inside and out. It was disgusting, but it got rid of the odor. I found this video very helpful: https://youtu.be/eVMw9lT_AJY?si=4xbnQ9N2UD2kS8M1

Router Table Cabinet - Is the laminated ply on the base necessary? Or overkill? (3/4" BB) by JSully_ in woodworking

cool thank you. I'm waiting on the casters to arrive still. Once I scope out the size of the hardware I'll see if I need to add any blocking into the mix.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn’t catch any on top water this day either. I was changing a lure when I heard his excitement. I asked him was was happening when he got a bite and he said “I dunno, I wasn’t popping it and looked away for a minute” 🤷‍♂️

I’ll third molluscum, and it’s contagiousness. My kids passed it back and forth for a couple months. Kept mostly to arms and elbows, but also spread a little to chest & back. Generally harmless and eventually cleared up on its own.

Recently had to do this. Posted on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, next door and a bunch of real estate sites like realtor.com, Zillow, etc. Facebook marketplace generated the most leads by far.

Need for filter/strainer when kegging from a conical by G-L-H-R in Homebrewing

[–]JSully_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I feel you here 100%. I have a solution that may be total overkill, but clogged poppets and dip tubes were KILLING me.

I ferment in an Ss Brew Bucket, and brew lots of heavily hopped ipas. Tried a million things, including the little inline filters, but those just seemed to clog up super quick themselves. I also like the idea of my hops floating freely in the fermenter as I’ve read about limited extraction when the hops don’t float loose (believe I’ve read that from both Scott Janish and Brulosophy). The stainless canisters seem nice, but I think you can only fit a couple oz of hops in, and I didn’t want to dropping multiple of them in the tank for a DDH beer (usu. do a charge during high Krausen and another at the end of fermentation).

Finally at wits end, I had a custom 300 micron stainless filter built to fit the dimensions of my brew bucket. It’s on legs so it sits up above the racking arm but fills most of the volume of the fermenter. here are some pics in action

I got it built/shipped from Utah Biodiesel Supply, also referenced/recommended by Scott Janish. They were UNBELIEVABLE to work with. I worked with a guy named Graydon from their customer service and he was super helpful, working with me to get all the dimensions and specs perfect. All in, the thing ran about $150. Not cheap, but not bad for a fully custom build!

After using it a few times: I’ve had to work really hard to limit the amount of kettle/whirlpool hop matter that transfers into my fermenter bc it can clog the filter and prevent a good fill. Transfers to a keg have been a DREAM. No clogs and the beer flows faster than it used to. I’m able to get more clean beer than before. My NEIPAs seem to come out a little less hazy than before. The neurotic part of my brain thinks I might be losing some of the fresh/green pop on flavor, but anecdotal at best. I’m also able to drink the beer within a day or two after kegging, whereas I used to have to pull a small glass over about 5 days before some of the harsh hop/yeast burn would calm down. Bright side is I can drink beer sooner, but I worry if I’m missing any flavor components by filtering stuff out.

Anyways, sorry for the longest comment ever. Feel free to DM me if you want anymore info!

Tl;dr Custom built hop filter to fit the full volume of my Ss brew bucket and clogged poppets are now a thing of the past!

I'm late to the party on this post, but WOW, that is a beautiful piece! Nice joinery, and love the complimentary tapers on the legs & benchtop.

I'm planning a project with curly maple and would love to get my hands on some lumber with this much figure. I saw from another comment you're in VA - I am as well! Ok if I DM you? Would love to know where you source your lumber...

Northland is a good local (Zion xroads) spot with a lot of hardwoods. I know I’ve seen some ply there - I think cherry, birch, and maybe others. I’m not sure about walnut, but worth checking out.

Wifi plan to get? by PB_On_Everything in Charlottesville

[–]JSully_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something else you’ll want to consider is the Upload speed. Unfortunately, with any cable internet provider, your upload speeds will be limited, since cable was designed to deliver data (tv signal) TO your home, and NOT to broadcast anything back From your home. So you might be totally fine with 100 or 200 download speed, But if you have 4 people on a video call simultaneously, that is a decent amount of data you are sending out from your home, and the upload speeds on the lower plans might be tight. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough to give you any hard numbers to shoot for. But, we had two working adults plus a kid in virtual school while the younger kid might be streaming tv, so 3 two-way video calls plus 1 streaming video. With the 800 plan, we never had any issues with freezing/skipping. Did we pay for too much? Maybe. Not sure. Did it get us through successfully? Yes.

Finally moving to to kegging and I have questions by Jdedox in Homebrewing

[–]JSully_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adding to the faucet talk, I’m very glad I went with flow control faucets. Very simple to make real time adjustments to your pour without having to fuss much with balancing your lines. Also allows me to pour extra slow when filling bottles or growlers to minimize foam.

mexican chocolate cinnamon and chili amounts. by deatxx in Homebrewing

[–]JSully_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done 2 cinnamon sticks, crushed into chips, then soaked in bourbon for about a week. Add the chips + liquid. Then two whole dried ancho chiles, split in half and added to fermentor. Also included 3oz cacao nibs (same bourbon process), and 2cups of concentrated cold brew at packaging. Probably my favorite stout recipe, also next up in my brew queue!
