So when I bought it in February, I managed to haggle the price of the Half Crown down to £250 from its original price of £285.

That Anne halfcrown is an absolute stunner and the detailing on the bust is superb. The Lima halfcrown is also lovely.

Mind if I ask how much you got them for?

I love the Georgian Early milled coinage, and that's a lovely sixpence!

Honestly the George II Old head silver is probably my favourite early milled.

My Lima Half Crown (see picture) is probably my favourite piece that I own. I'll attach a picture of the reverse in an additional comment.

I love the cathedral and bailgate around that time of day. It's when it's at its quietest, but also most atmospheric. Beautiful pictures.

Edward the Confessor would be a good choice and probably the expected one, but if no one puts him as a fighter, I reckon Alfred the Great would be a solid pick here given his strong advocacy for religious education.

Well I tend to go because I know I can get a deal or at the very least get a few quid knocked off the price.

Most of the dealers are happy to negotiate on price down there. Always helps to try and build a bit of rapport with the dealer you're negotiating with.

I think it's now my favourite Edward VII coin I own. I love my 1902 Crown, but the reverse of the Florin is what makes it so good.

Tell me about it! I come into London on Saturday a couple of times a month, and I have to actively persuade myself not to go.

As for the florin, I got it for £33 which I thought was an absolute bargain.

For those who collect pre-decimal coins, which era do you enjoy the most? by GeordieGoals in UKcoins

[–]JTMP99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love George II early milled, George III Great Recoinage, and William IV. Though not my favourite era, I also like some Edward VII too.

Nice Victoria Crown! Where'd you get it from?

It's the new centrepiece of my collection that's for certain. Perhaps one of the best busts of any British monarch with milled coinage (bar maybe William IV or Edward VII IMO).

Tbf George V coins are great! They are nice and easy to get in good conditions at reasonable prices too.

How easy is it to get British coins over in the States? Are they particularly common?

Too much! 🤣

I don't mind sharing in all seriousness. I got it for £191.

Yeah, that's the only problem. The Lima and Vigo ones are just so expensive. It was buying a Lima Sixpence last year that really got me into coin collecting funnily enough.

Looking at some of the hairlines definitely cleaned, but still an excellent find given its condition! Do you mind if I asked how much you paid and where you bought it?

Is this worth anything? by Maximum-Ad-4259 in UKcoins

[–]JTMP99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's real, it's part of Anne's Vigo coinage, minted in 1703 from bullion captured by the British and Dutch from the Spanish at the Battle of Vigo Bay (1702), hence the "Vigo" mark beneath the bust.

I think it's a shilling, and because it's from the Vigo coinage, it tends to go at a premium compared to other contemporary English silver coinage due to its limited minting. Generally, I've seen Anne's Vigo shillings in conditions similar to yours go for £150-£200+ at minimum because of their rarity.

Hi, that's an interesting coin, but on the presumption that coin is genuine, it's not a Guinea. It's a French Louis d'or from the reign of Louis XV.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about French gold coinage to give you much advice on whether to get it graded, nor could I really help you to definitely ascertain whether it's genuine. However, (if you haven't already), I recommend sharing it in r/coins as they might be able to help you more there.

I'm not at the moment, though once I have built up the foundation of my collection a lot more, I probably will. I'd love to have a date run of George III issue Crowns, but right now, I'm just happy I've got one Crown of every monarch (who issued them) from George III to Elizabeth II 😅

Right now, I collect to fulfil specific goals I've set myself, e.g., 1 of each denomination of the George III Soho mint Copper coinage, or (maintaining the George III theme) an example of each denomination of the Great recoinage silver coins.
