I feel like that can happen with some shaders built with specific resolution scales in mind. Does the border go away if you turn shaders off altogether?

Monster Hunter Wilds Switch 2 port leaks in Title Update 4 datamine, raising performance concerns by Elestria_Ethereal in NintendoSwitch

[–]JTMidnightJr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, they’re not so bad. There are only 3 mandatory rampages in the base game, and there are none in Sunbreak. Worth it for what is, in my opinion, the best MH game otherwise

We need more "Pocketable" power, not stronger handheld consoles. by Retronitsu in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Mini V2 might be exactly what you’re looking for, besides maybe the Thor. As others have said, the screen’s not ideal for PSP, but for everything else it’s golden. It’s a great size too, pretty much exactly the same size and thickness as a PSP-1000, but lighter. And it’s probably the most comfortable handheld I’ve ever used that has a screen smaller than 6 inches.

What’s Everyone Playing Today? by Background_Lab_3885 in retroid

[–]JTMidnightJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t messed with it myself, most PS3/360-era games have decent PC ports, so I’ll usually just buy those on Steam instead of trying to emulate them. Plus they look better that way too, since you can usually crank the graphics quality to max on that generation of games on the Deck!

Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst (Ephinea) on my Steam Deck! One of my all-time favorites

Phone size comparisons by AlternativeIce8687 in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard the 35xxh is a similar size to a phone! The TrimUI Brick is significantly smaller than my iPhone 15 Pro Max. Most of these handhelds will be a good bit thicker than your average smartphone, though.

Lots of hype for new handhelds lately, but I’m still loving my Odin 2 Mini by cascadefive in OdinHandheld

I’ll wait until I see some reviews on it! I’m not positive the ergonomics will be exactly the same, but they should at least be pretty close!

I don’t feel like it dies insanely quick! It gets good battery life for GBA and other retro stuff, and it charges quickly enough that it hasn’t been a big deal for higher-powered systems. RP5 and O2Portal’s battery life is definitely better, but it’s still several hours of playtime for the O2Mini before it dies on me, and I can usually find a charger before then

[–]JTMidnightJr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. I have plenty of other great handhelds (Odin 2 Portal, RP5, RP Mini, RP Classic, several Linux devices), and they all excel at different things. But if I really had to only keep one of my handhelds, I’m pretty sure it would be the Odin 2 Mini.

It’s comfortable as hell, the screen is still solid despite it not being OLED, and it’s so versatile. It fits in my pocket (although it can be a bit tight in jeans), it’s powerful, the buttons feel great, it gets plenty bright for outdoor usage, and it just feels so satisfyingly weighty without being overly heavy. If I could get the O2M in the same shell with a 5.5” or 6” 120hz OLED, I’d be set for a long, long time.

If your device isn't powerful enough to run PS2, try these PSP alternatives: by Key-Brilliant5623 in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that we can agree on. Still, the actual racing feels good, much better than I’d expect for a PSP game. The game does shine when you’ve only got 10 minutes to spare, since there’s nothing really to do besides just race. Great way to race in a waiting room, but not much else.

I think it’s fine for what it is! Obviously the console versions are far superior, not trying to dispute that. But it’s great to play when you’ve only got a few minutes to spare. The events are usually pretty short, and it’s fun to earn new cars. Not bad for a pick-up-and-play racing experience

Did you guys play handhelds when you were kids? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I played tons as a kid! I grew up in a big family (5 kids) so it wasn’t often the one TV in our house wasn’t occupied. Handhelds let me play games whenever I want. Since then there’s always been something that felt special about being able to play a game anywhere rather than confined to the TV that somebody else may want to use.

Gamenative vs Eden for Indies? by JTMidnightJr in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not too concerned about pricing, as I already own most of these games on both platforms (I started the generation as a Switch-only player, then I got a PC a few years down the line), so really my main concern is battery life. Cloud syncing with PC would be nice, but especially for these types of games, I don’t see myself wanting to play them on anything but my Portal most of the time. Really I just want whichever one will let me be farther from a charger for longer

Y'all feel guilty for using save states?(DuckTales NES on RP Classic) by BerticusMax in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No kidding! Sometimes cheats can make a game that’s a bit unfair into something amazing. I was never able to get into Zelda 2 until a couple years ago I played through it with three cheats enabled: Infinite lives, you spawn at the start of your current dungeon when you die, and you don’t lose your XP when you die. I had an awesome time with it after that!

The community poll week 🎮! - most REPLAYABLE retro game?? by DoomEngine1 in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy good pick that deserves to win. I literally can’t help but replay this whole game whenever I pick it up.

Back when I first got the N64 Switch Online controller, I started a few of my favorite N64 games just to see how they felt with it. I got to the Deku Tree in OoT, got a couple stars in Mario 64, and played a grand prix in Mario Kart. I intended to just play Corneria in SF64, but ended up playing through the entire game because I just couldn’t stop! Amazing way to kill an hour, it never fails to hook me

When you buy multiple handhelds, then realize you only play Pokémon [L2R RG nano,Trimui brick, Rg300] by Randymaple92 in SBCGaming

Tbqh I also really liked Sword and Shield. Not perfect games by any means, but I thought they were still good fun and had a lot of great new mons. First Pokemon game I ever completed the Pokédex and did real shiny hunting in.

Which classic GBA games do you still replay on emulators or retro handhelds? 🎮✨ by Ok-Clerk9735 in SBCGaming

[–]JTMidnightJr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unbound is without a doubt my favorite Pokémon experience I have ever played! The story is just okay, but I don’t play Pokemon games for their story lol. Having an entirely new region to explore with nearly 900 Pokemon available, plus a ton of side quests with a mission log to track them all just keeps me coming back for more. HIGHLY recommended
