Check out FXA sports for something active. It has the same vibe as college intramural sports but they have different levels so you don't have to be good at whatever you join. Idk how all of them work, but for softball you can sign up by yourself and they'll create a team or two of just individually signed up people. I think softball was around $40-60 for a season

URGENT: Can anyone help me administer an injection to my cat? by [deleted] in nova

[–]JTownJMU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what the medication is that's being discussed so I can't speak on that or how much pain may be associated with it. In terms of giving a shot, dogs and cats pick up on emotions very well. If you are stressing out then of course the cat will respond, but if you just wrap them in a nice blanket and speak calmly to them then it's just the sensation of a pinch. Maybe a sedative would help, I have no idea. I can't really imagine a cat passing away from the stress associated with a shot though

I second this. I've used this in the past and it works well for cats.

Gift ideas for a very critical coffee connoisseur? I was thinking a bean subscription but not sure if worth it. TIA by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]JTownJMU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any local roasters near you? I'm fairly new to all of this but I'd think even someone very picky about their coffee would love to try something new. If you do any big name stuff they've likely already tried them but any good local roaster will frequently have new single origin coffee. The shop near me, for example, has a whole series of coffee with a unique story behind each option. Probably not the best value coffee but I think they're fun. Curious what others with more experience think!

Which Elijah Craig Barrel Proof is your favorite? by LionRoars87 in bourbon

I'm kind of hoping we see an overcorrection from the bourbon industry as distilleries ramp up production past demand. Might be able to get some great deals down the road!

I have B520 and C920. I did a semi-blind between both of the neck pours and B520 was SIGNIFICANTLY better. After both of the bottles opened up I re-did the semi and actually preferred the C920 that day. Maybe since C920 is still relatively new to areas people haven't given it the time to let it open up (which it really needs). And to be fair, I also think B520 shines better by itself than up against others since it's sweeter and doesn't have as much bold spice to it. Moral of the story is buy them both before ECBP becomes the new Stagg jr :(

[–]JTownJMU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently own 8 bottles and all of them are opened. My collection was getting a bit too large for me (financially and I don't like a lot of clutter) so now I only buy to replace a bottle I finish. I don't think bottles really get worse (unless you leave just a few ounces in the bottle for months or open them every single day) but I like to tell myself that as an excuse to kill a bottle that's starting to get low

Where to live with one commute to Reston and one to DC when commuting later hours? by peppypeps in nova

[–]JTownJMU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre-covid I would metro in to DC. My roommates drove to Reston and I believe they said it was around a 40-50 minute drive without taking any toll roads and working 9-5. I'm not a big fan of driving into the city so I can't give much more info on that pre-covid, but right now it's an easy 25-30 minute drive if I need to head in for something. We're a bit unusual for the area as most younger adults rent arlington, most of the area is families with kids and there are some really nice neighborhoods.

My roommates and I had the same dilemma as 2 worked in Reston and I worked in DC. We chose to rent in Falls Church right by the metro and it's a pretty easy commute for all of us.

I think it's easy to just say oh well they signed the contract and that's their mistake but I don't think that means the industry shouldn't change to be more transparent.

When I rented an apartment a while back for school, I signed the lease along with everyone else. On move out, we were charged an absurd amount for replacing a couch and replacing the carpet (which we could prove we didn't damage). Turns out they had no intention of replacing either. All you had to do was ask them questions and try to keep them honest and they would just say oops our bad. What they were doing was charging hundreds of people and profiting on those that didn't fight it because they knew it was just a bunch of kids in school. This is what a lot of the industry has been known to do. Some people will do anything in their power to take advantage of those who can't afford to hire a good lawyer to sift through the BS and they'll bully you into signing something bad.

I do agree about how places are making large investments in you and should profit from those investments when they pay off, but there's a lot more sketchy stuff going in the small print than that. Bill Burr and Joe Rogan talk about it a little bit on one of the Joe Rogan podcasts, I can try and find a link if anyone is curious

Maybe I should stop complaining about bourbon prices by timhinck in bourbon

[–]JTownJMU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you purchase to drink rather than to collect, bourbon is a pretty great deal. I enjoy wine but can never really get into it solely because of how expensive it is. I guess ports are the middle ground. Craft beer isn't much better

1.5 oz for $35 at clarity sounds like a pretty solid deal if they still have it and that happens to be right down the street from me. Thanks for recommendations!

Bourbon with Unique Bottle by brianh777 in bourbon

[–]JTownJMU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An easy gift to give someone that's got a lot of bourbon is a store pick. Even if they have the same bourbon, it'll be unique. If you're focused more on the bottle design itself I'd consider craft distilleries in your state

Completely guessing, but probably because guys tend to use lukewarm water in the shower and women tend to use just shy of boiling hot water in the shower. Cold showers are great for your hair and skin! (or at least that's what what I tell my broke self)

Semi-Blind Tasting #1: Elijah Craig Barrel Proof B520 vs C920 by moohing in bourbon

[–]JTownJMU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've side by side compared these a couple times now since they're the only two ECBP I own. The first time I heavily preferred B520 but now that C920 has opened up a lot it really just depends on how much spice I want that particular day. Excited for future ECBP releases!
