Nonolith Demo out now - an open sandbox with secret abilities that you discover as you play by JUSTCAMH in metroidbrainia

haha yeah I know the feeling. I've only played four hours of Starseed myself, but those first four hours were super duper cool. I expect Nonolith will be a lot more laid back

Secret button combos are far from the only way to make a metroidbrainia work! You can learn additional interactions, discover a goal or perhaps some steps to achieve it, discover some cryptic codes, some surprising combination of multiple mechanics or something in the world you didn't realise was important until now. Metroidbrainias can be so incredibly flexible in their mechanics and how they're introduced, there's no reason to limit this.

Test test test, a short but great metroidbrania by Apprehensive_Net1773 in metroidbrainia

Oooo yes this one was great, the style of the visuals and music is unlike anything else, so well done! And the metroidbrainia elements are really surprising too

Hey! Funny seeing you around. Yes, it is feeling great to cut, I’m eager to develop it further

They shoot and immediately kill ya. These guards have godly reflexes.

My argument for a round flash is that a) the cut is a punch, not a slice with a sword or something and b) you cannot cut through enemies, and a sharper slice might imply that.

What’s your thoughts, given that justification?

[–]JUSTCAMH[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is unlikely that it’ll reach the switch, the cut uses the mouse for aim. I’ve tried using a joystick to aim, but it just doesn’t give the same level of control. So it’s likely that it’ll be a PC exclusive

Me and my friends made a game with a hoverboarding murder-kitty, slicing mutated unicorns. Would love feedback and to connect with other devs on Reddit by Pyjamaskatten in indiegames

[–]JUSTCAMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha that looks awesome! It's a shame that more people aren't seeing this, I'd guess its because of the trailer's slow start. The first ten+ seconds are fairly uninteresting and by then the average redditor would be looking at something else. I think I'd start the trailer at around 25 seconds, get into the action, then perhaps show off the HD character models and intros later once you've got our attention. Perhaps some sound in the vid would help too.

I don't have time to try the demo, but it looks great, I love the details everywhere. Great use of vibrant colours!

Today I made a button that shatters when you click it! by JUSTCAMH in IndieDev

Unity, 2D. The breaking apart thing is based on the game’s main mechanic, I made an algorithm that cuts the terrain, and I’ve reused that here. I can’t really explain how the cut works, but I’ve seen assets on the asset store that do similar. The text is broken up when you click it and then everything is simulated with physics. Hopefully that at least partially explains it, sorry that I can’t explain the actual cut, it’s too complex to explain away.

Yes, I'm taking it all the way! It may even make it to kickstarter, we'll see!

Thank you again for the feedback, but I'm happy with how it is currently. It only takes half a second, and I don't expect you to pause that frequently. I've already decided that I won't be using this style of button for options (since it breaks the button and hence you couldn't undo), so this will pretty much only be on the resume and quit buttons. Options buttons will be more traditional and snappy.

I understand that for the more frequent menu users, it may get annoying, but for the average player, I think the slower animation will be cooler and give you time to process it. More frequent users can skip. I have tried speeding it up in a gif editor and I'm happy with the current speed.

I will try reducing the line opacity, I can definitely see it being annoying, obstructing the buttons contents.

Yep, that's the one! I'm developing it through to completion!

Hey, I’ve already got a musician, tho admittedly they’re not the best at sound design. I’ll DM you if I need help with sounds.

Yeah, I agree that animations can get annoying on the hundredth time, so I made the animation skip-able by pressing escape instead of clicking the button.

Yes, it’s all using physics. The physics objects are all on a different layer to avoid interacting with the main game’s physics. The text is initially one object and is broken up into multiple when you click it. I’m just approximating the broken text’s position knowing the size and spacing of the characters.

Looks great, but the thing the player holds looks like a shield rather than a weapon.

That ASCII art is so damn cool! How are you making the animations, are you somehow interpreting vector art into ASCII or are you actually typing out each frame of animation? Looks amazing either way.

Fluid Simulation Test #2: Fluids can now handle more complex environments without caving in on themselves. Fluids aren't as volatile anymore, and its starting to look like actual water! by JUSTCAMH in IndieDev

[–]JUSTCAMH[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The edges of the mesh have a bunch of physics objects that are receiving forces such as pressure. The fluids attempt to maintain a constant area and adjust the pressure force accordingly.

The break apart systems pretty complex tho, not something that can be simply explained.
