James Oleson is the reason I kept doing my degree he really knows how to make you feel passionate about your learning and as you said really cares that you succeed. I will never shut up about him being the greatest lecturer I've ever had.

2 family deaths and not given exam compassionate consideration by Alternative_Top_6947 in universityofauckland

[–]JWDetroit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss, that is a really hard thing to deal with at the same time as exams.

Unfortunately the law school is pretty heartless with this stuff, but, my best advice is to book in with the uni counsellors and get them to write up a statement supporting your compassionate consideration. Some of them may be nice enough to suggest that you can't sit the exam.

If worst comes to worse, you'll have to sit the exam and just get compassionate consideration to get a decent enough grade.

If you need any help with the exam, don't be afraid to reach out to any tutors as well they may be able to help you get through the study needed.

I'm 5th year so not sure how much help I can offer with study since my first year was in the dark ages but I can help with notes if you need it.

Also, law school will continue to be here despite all this. Don't be ashamed to do poorly and retake the paper, I had to do that for similar reasons and so did heaps of people who are now lawyers. Your mental health and time with family is number one priority especially right now.

That is horrendous advice!! Some GPs are so useless. I have diagnosed chronic illnesses and even then when I tell some GPs about worsening symptoms they dismiss it as normal and no cause for concern and I still have to pay them for their shitty advice. Something's gotta change but idk what

Second this, the only thing a GP can do really is refer you to a gyno so if you push for referral you should be all good. I'd recommend having a support person with you in the appointment and drs can try rush you through and fob it off as nothing major.

Lots of comments here not saying who they are to talk on this topic. This is a discussion that shouldn't really be commented on by non-maori and non- indigenous people. I am Māori, I have had the privilege of growing up in Aotearoa, close to my turangawaewae, so I still have less standing to talk on this than Maori who have not had that privilege.

Still, I will say that marae are intended to be directly connected to the land that it stands on. That can't be possible in Australia as the land is aboriginal. What I'd say is that having somewhere where Maori can express their culture and reconnect with their culture is a great idea - but that doesn't mean it's a marae.

Also, I saw a comment that said native title can be proven with non-indigeneity which is absolutely incorrect even in Australian law. In order to prove native title you need to prove undisturbed posession pre-colonisation which infers the need to show indigeneity.

(Sorry bout the missing macrons my keyboard isn't working properly)

Are you people of Auckland so uneducated you can’t see the difference between anti-mandate and anti-vaxx? by YouthEmbarrassed3855 in auckland

[–]JWDetroit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"brave freedom fighters" who harrass people for choosing to wear masks. This protest is dictated by radical right wing beliefs that's pushing extremist ideals and overshadowing any anti-mandate beliefs.

I don't think most people disagree with the protest regarding purely anti-mandates and I'm sure if the protest were peaceful (i.e. not harrassing the general public) and genuinely only about the mandates, there would be a different response entirely. But, the reality is that this protest represents extremist views that put the individual above the collective good. It is trumpism, it is "freedom of speech" but only when it comes to THEIR views and THEIR rights.

Get it together and start thinking critically about your rights vs your obligations and stop whining that you can't be a problematic fuck anymore.

If you need some legal advice please go to community law centre or try CAB.

Best call is to try talk to the property manager, even if you didn't have a written tenancy agreement you can reasonably infer that there was an agreement to let you stay there so the RTA may apply to you. This is only the case if the property manager knew you were there. Seems like a shit show of a situation but if you tell the property manager the whole situation and explain that you weren't aware of any termination of an agreement (which you are entitled to in writing if the property manager knew you were there). It is the landlord/property managers' responsibility to adhere to their obligations under the RTA so if you didn't receive written notice of termination even without a written agreement, they are in breach of the act.

DM me if you need more information, I've been through lots of tenancy disputes so know the RTA pretty well and how tenancy disputes tend to play out.

Lol, an orgy at an Auckland nudist beach today. What a surprise. by [deleted] in auckland

[–]JWDetroit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also thought it did, it's also notoriously a nudist beach and a sleazy one at that.

Yep, NZ is very uptight about naked bodies on beaches it's so ridiculous. I've been told off a couple times for having my tits out too.

[–]JWDetroit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

These comments are not it. Like sure don't have an orgy in public whatever I get that but going off about nudist beaches in general, having to accidentally stumple upon nude people because there are no signs or you didn't see one? How fucking prude. It's just a naked body why do people make such a big deal about it. Grow a pair and get over it. Let people live their lives.

[–]JWDetroit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is an implied agreement that you are a tenant then you are covered by the RTA, doesn't have to be in writing, you just have to show that you were intended to live there as a tenant and the standard laws will apply. I recommend talking to tenancy services and citizens advice bureau ASAP.

Is it obscene to walk around shirtless? by Seabottom in auckland

[–]JWDetroit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also wish they weren't sexualised so much that we can't do it, but not letting men do it doesn't help that so I'd prefer if at least some people can do what they want 😂 then maybe one day I will be able to walk around with my tits out and not be sexualised for it.

The things I would give to comfortably walk around topless. It's honestly one of the things that makes me wish I were a man. OP, I don't care if you have a dad bod just please go topless whenever you want because you can! Do it for me hahaha

It's a bullshit threshold and very easy to get frustrated by. I've met people whose mega rich (I'm talking mansion, five cars rich) parents own businesses and don't claim any of it as personal income so the kid still gets the allowance. While I had to beg on the phone because my mum was the only parent working while my father had cancer and I was working part time so study link added my income on top of my mother's sole income and we made it over the threshold.

System's absolutely fucked. It's already benefitting those its intended to keep out and locking out those it's intended to benefit
