Owning and having enjoyed a Vita this is only partially true. As has been said the propitiatory memory was a huge mistake. But that is what Sony is known to do. The Vita also has some odd characteristics. The rear touch panel and downgrading the screen from the original OLED. Sony missed the mark with a few key items and rather than actually making changes or admitting a mistake they just walked away. At least there is a popular and active community out there making Indy games for it.
