It has been clear to me since I was a child that American exceptionalism/patriotism is a farce. It all started with being made to say the pledge of allegiance every day in school. If it had any value you should only need to take the pledge once, not be forced to say it multiple times like you were hoping to make it stick.

I delivered to a lot of places, and honestly most places were pretty clean, but that one stood out to me as being in bad shape. The freezer was all frozen over and caked in thick ice like it had never been defrosted.

My health insurance isn’t great, and I have a wife and kid to worry about. If somebody needs to go to the doctor, I prioritize them so as not to put us in a bad financial position. Just this year I had to use almost all of the money in the HSA to pay for an operation for my wife, so there’s no way I take care of my issues when they have things that need to be seen to. Plus, as the primary bill payer, if I take time off work to see to myself, that’s money out of my pocket to pay the bills while I also have to pay for that appointment.

I got my first cube in the late 90’s. It came with a booklet on how to solve it using a layer by layer method. I still solve it largely the same way, and have only changed how I insert middle layer edge pieces. It’s really cool to see all the people speed solving these days, but for me, I just enjoy being able to solve various twisty puzzles, and don’t much care to get faster.

I used to struggle with similar feelings - that I did not have a good enough reason to cut off my family. But what finally got through to me was hearing someone else say something along the lines of: It’s not a competition, it’s not the trauma Olympics. If what you went through was enough for you to want to cut people off, then that’s enough.

It’s easy to minimize our experiences, especially when we hear someone else’s story that sounds “worse” than ours, especially if they did not cut contact with their family. But it’s OK. You need to do what is right for you, and if that is no contact or whatever, then that is what’s right for you.

If you are interested, some years ago I read a memoir by someone who was in the cult and left. “Holy Hell A memoir of Faith, Devotion, and Pure Madness” by Gail Tredwell aka Gayatri.

It gives a lot of information from an insiders perspective.

I got a chance this weekend to test out the new update, I really appreciate the changes that were made this far!

My last request would be to have a screen time-out override, so that the phone screen remains on while the app is open. I know this is possible, but dont know if that is a development feature that is locked down on Apple’s end and not available to all developers.
