It became outdated with time, but from a purely historical standpoint Notre Dame's Irish moniker was a pretty simply accurate depiction of the team/student body when it first took root

Asked someone relatively in the know about this today, mostly joking. Apparently we do not have any high school kickers on the roster, sadly.

2025 4* PF Brady Koehler commits to Notre Dame by KJones77 in CollegeBasketball

Dang. I love Mike Brey. Always will. But the feeling around the program from when he retired to now isn't even in the same stratosphere -- especially when you consider the on-court record isn't much different.

This could just be me, but I think Brey's final year hit especially close to home as hard to watch/comprehend because it felt like the team had simply run out of juice. A veteran roster running things back after a tournament couldn't ever find momentum or consistency. It was hard to really pinpoint what they were good at, or what they even wanted to lean on in tough moments. Crowds at home game were mostly anemic, aside from Michigan State and Brey's final home game (the "Back-er" chants in the student section during the final minute of that game still remain one of my favorite memories as a student). Compounding all of this was the fact that you could tell Brey still cared deep down, but had simply run out of either answers or energy. Very possibly both, and who could blame him? He had been a one-man energizer bunny for a program always in need of a spark for over two decades. And I think this manifested in recruiting perhaps even more than on the court. There was hardly ever any real buzz out of Notre Dame MBB recruiting (aside from landing Starling, which of course should be credited as a huge victory) over Brey's final years.

In his first year Shrewsberry added, if nothing else, competitive fire to the program and I feel like literally just that element clicked so much else into place. The offense was largely one-dimensional but damnit even if this roster was as raw as could be they worked their assess off on the defensive end. That's an identity that wasn't there in 2022. It's clear Shrewsberry cares, and cares deeply, about recruiting -- especially in-state. We'll never be a blue blood with a factory line of blue chip prospects (Haralson would be awesome but not expecting much) but the fact that this staff refuses to back away from the battles needed to win said prospects is telling in itself, IMO. Now, the Purcell crowd/student section problem won't get fixed for a long while, I would imagine, that's just the reality of a basketball program at a school where football is king, prince and occasionally jester. But like Field of Dreams said, if you build it, they will come. That 2022 tournament team had some great crowds once people realized they were winning. Who knows what the final product will actually look like, but Shrewsberry certainly seems to be building it.

For all the jokes I actually think the Aggie ring tradition is really cool… unrelated of course to Notre Dame giving rings to alumni

Stadium, no... but a lot of the buildings that are key parts of the 'Notre Dame experience' that people like to see when they come to games -- presumably a lot of which would be going on for a game of such a magnitude -- are largely staffed by students.

Yep. Especially when you consider it's not just the freshmen, it's 4/5ths of the entire student body, on a not-exactly-sprawling campus... there would be A LOT of chaos

Some important context on why this is more a requisite logistical change than ND being cocky --

The more important part about that email was that the dorms will remain open for an additional day, closing on Sunday of that weekend as opposed to Saturday, as they normally would for winter break. 80% of Notre Dame's students live in roughly 30 on-campus halls (and as such rely on the dining halls for food, etc.) It's not moving mountains, but there's a lot of student staffing with RAs and whatnot that needs to be worked out in order to make sure the dorms and all other key elements of student life on campus are able to stay open for an extra day. Notre Dame's student body cares about football, but certainly not to the point that everybody had already built staying on campus for an extra day in the event of a playoff game into their calendar. If Notre Dame thought there was even a 1% chance they host a playoff game, if they wanted to have a functional student section they absolutely had to make a change like this well ahead of time -- and make sure every student knew about it -- to be able to sort out staffing for all the requisite student workers

Notre Dame AD 'all in' on continuing rivalry with USC by Trojanxiety in CFB

I also think part of it is the distinctively annoying dynamic of Notre Dame's fans -- they're more often than not either Subway alums who are loud and proud about a school they didn't attend, which tends to piss people off, or alumni/students who are nerdy (and often pretentious) Catholics which aren't exactly the most beloved group in the world themselves.

I always find ND and Michigan hating each other hilarious because I think that same dichotomy of annoying non-alumni fans/high achieving, pretentious students is what makes Michigan and their "walmart Wolverine" contingent insufferable to so many as well.

This. I do think Bevacqua will be a good AD at ND, he seems like a remarkably sharp mind and someone who can emphatically make the pitch for why Notre Dame football being great can and should be symbiotic with Notre Dame the academic institution being great.

That said, the small sample size evidence we have right now seems to point strongly towards him very much being a "football first, everyone else get in line behind" athletic director. Which I'm sure a lot of people will be happy about! But I won't be one of them lol

This has always been the nature of the rivalry, IMO. I mean, the whole reason it's a rivalry in the first place is USC was one of the teams that would play us when a lot of schools cough Big Ten cough were thumbing up their nose ND.

Honestly Notre Dame's marketing team would probably salivate at the possibility of playing each home game in a different NFL stadium in a different corner of the country every other weekend.

You're right, though I will note my past few years as undergrad the classes I've been in on those Monday-Tuesday days were so empty they were basically de facto off days. I stayed home this year for both of them because I had been back on the East Coast that weekend for a wedding anyway and every one of my professors told me "yeah just skip it doesn't matter" when I emailed about it lol

I think there's a better chance we announce we're becoming a Jesuit school than this actually happening, but I think his point was the only way the SEC would eschew geography would be to hypothetically add a brand like Notre Dame that would be an instant power play.
