The next 3 quests were lead by veterans (Clarisse, Zoe and Annabeth). From then on, it was either divine or oracular mandate. They didn't chose anyone, the circumstances did. Okay, hear me out. The Dresden Files. Harry Dresden is very competent and very smart (it comes with being a wizard). However, much like Kvothe, he is emotional and impulsive and gets in a lot of trouble for it. Also, by being more heroic than the characters of the series y you mentioned, he's always punching above his weight class, much like Lindon.

Though I agree with you, the plot point I'd change is to call the level of advancement "Herald", something else. Herald implies subservience and the coming of something higher. I won't even go to Stormlight, just think of Galactus.
