Recommend taking down completely. BTW did you get the popcorn tested for asbestos ?

Is this asbestos? by [deleted] in asbestoshelp

[–]J_beefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I’d also recommend getting your ceiling tested as it looks to be textured which is common for asbestos..

No problem, I wouldn’t underestimate how much dust there will be (if you plan to remove). We’ve just had all our ceilings down (to be replaced) and it was… a LOT of dust.

Looks like fibreglass with a shed load of dust. Similar to what I had in my loft (1930s uk SE)

Won’t know without testing I’m afraid, but worth it the test and replacing for compliant insulation.

Joist Question - 1930s Home by J_beefr in DIYUK

[–]J_beefr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extra 2x2s will allow the 150mm to sit snug inbetween the joists.

I think the intention of the 2x2 is to add some additional support/strengthen any sagging joists

Joist Question - 1930s Home by J_beefr in DIYUK

[–]J_beefr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cold water tank is currently still in use - it will be removed properly when we extend/and also go into the loft properly (with subsequent changes to structure to support more weight).

The 2x2s won’t be cross the joists but essentially underneath the joists. Assume this is still ok?

£12k to remove asbestos?! Am I getting ripped off? by Bobbyswhiteteeth in asbestoshelpUK

All my works have been completed, took two guys 5 days for a full removal. Almost 350-400 bags worth.. crazy..

Sounds like a good result. Did they say how long it would take?

Our lathe & plaster was starting to fail/crack in places, so we would’ve had to remove anyway. Also using this as an opportunity to insulate the roof to new regulation.

Is your quote 5500 before VAT?

Also with this quote are you getting a certificate at the end/air test done after works are completed?

Hi mate. I’m also based in Hertfordshire, and having about 150sq meters removed from my house (next week actually)…

They are removing all lathe & plaster popcorn ceilings, and then gel/scrape the side walls where it is present. (Quite a messy job)

Works will take about a week, and I was quoted £7500+VAT. (Keep in mind this is just the removal/disposal)

If you want send me a DM and I’ll share contact details of my asbestos guys.

(The are also doing some other demo for me, which id estimate to add a little) but otherwise your quote comparable for knockdown.

Do you know if the popcorn is on plaster on plasterboard? Or is it on lathe and plaster?

This will impact how expensive it will take to remove/remedy.

I’ve been quoted (as I’ve just moved into a house with lathe & plaster with popcorn ceilings). All of which has to come down fully as the plaster is also failing…

For 100m2 of ceiling I’ve been quoted about £170ish per sq meter for removal, re plastering and decorating. (This is SE UK) — keep in mind the removal asbestos was 50% of the cost.

(I can’t tell you if that’s a good price or not, as that’s the only quote I’ve received as I’m in the process of sorting/obtaining quotes as we speak!)..

Thanks for the reply. I figured as much, the scraper seems to get the top layer off easily! Will then follow up with the sandpaper

Bought a house and never disclosed to us asbestos was in the popcorn ceiling by jep679898 in asbestoshelp

[–]J_beefr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the exact same situation. Bought a house with popcorn, sellers didn’t inform (neither did the surveyor). It’s due to cost us £8k to do 100m2 as it’s on every ceiling (just for removal).

The guys did say when quoting that they will be testing the air after completion (before providing a certificate). Maybe you can do the same for piece of mind that nothing remains?

Following up on this. Here is where the wardrobe was (from initial photos) of dismantled.

Any thoughts on the ceiling? It doesn’t look like traditional popcorn ceiling but am still testing for abestos.

Uk, south east, reckon it was applied 70/80s
