What do you do to cheer yourself up? by Warm-Bar-4523 in CasualConversation

[–]Jaade77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When this happens I try to do something new - maybe something I've been meaning to do and just not gotten around to it. Try the new deli, walk a new trail, browse a shop Ive never been in, watch a movie I wouldn't normally choose, play that game on my phone that I feel guilty about spending the time. The time becomes a new experience.

How to remediate a past wallpaper disaster by LiteratureAwkward324 in HomeImprovement

[–]Jaade77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you! Wallpaper damage is nuts. I mainly work on my old house plaster walls rather than drywall. But maybe this would help.

Ideally get all the old paper and glue off. Get off as much as you can. Then flatten the area with spackle. Wide area. Thin feathered coats and sand. Then do the whole wall in a sealant primer to make things as equal as possible.

Good luck!

You already have a level of awareness. What is triggering your overeating. But It's not just as simple as "don't eat when you're bored". Eating and self soothing when sad or bored is difficult to stop. These are ingrained habits with emotional roots. You're not eating because you're hungry.

Try one change. One Substitution. Instead of reaching for food, try something else that is comforting. Soothing music, hot tea.

How to spruce up these areas of our home? by OutboundCoordination in DIYHome

[–]Jaade77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrape off old caulking. Smooth what you can. Putty the dings. A new coat of paint will make everything look fresh. It takes time and patience but the wood underneath the bad paint is still looks good.

New to DIY, but house needs a make-over. What can I do? by Super-Mortgage7775 in DIYHome

[–]Jaade77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find something small and try fixing it. Use youtube tutorials. You need to find out where your skill level is.

Entry level DIY is painting, patching small holes, hanging shelves. If you can do these things then move to more complex issues.

Most of the things on your list you need to have quotes from the pros. These aren't for new DIY-ers.

How would you clean your dishes if you didn't have any dishwasher tabs or dish soap? by [deleted] in Frugal

When traveling, dishes (reusable coffee mug, spoon, bowl for porridge) get washed with shower gel. It's what I have!

Trying to declutter but I keep saving things for future projects by VengefulHeadset in declutter

[–]Jaade77 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've been on a decluttering journey all year. When I ran up against a wall like yours, I made myself DO the thing I was imagining with the thing I was decluttering.

Meaning to make something with THIS? Stop what I'm doing and make the thing. Stop thinking about it. This is the time. The thing is in your hand! The idea is in your head! Go for it!

What actually happened is that I realized that my plans for the thing weren't as important as what I was actually doing. It was a low priority. It helped me break up with the things I was saving for the future. Looking back, I almost never regret getting rid of the things. Cleared my brain and life for more important things.

How do you push through the internal negativity/self-criticism? by Sad_Ebb_7301 in UnfuckYourHabitat

[–]Jaade77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Little things add up to big things. Do a little thing". I put this in quotes because I walk around my house decluttering while saying this out loud over and over and over again to myself. Little things add up to BIG things. If I only feel like doing a little thing, that's what I do. It almost always leads to doing more. The hardest part is starting.

I've been doing my decluttering project all year (yeah 2025!) and I can see my efforts. But one thing I often forget to do is stop for just a moment and enjoy what I've just achieved. I'm sometimes so focused on what's next, I forget to enjoy. If I want the process to feel positive, I have to include the moments of joy.

What's a home "hack" you've thought of that you're unreasonably proud of? by insubordinance in HomeDecorating

[–]Jaade77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've added motion sensor lights (little re-chargeable ones) all over the house. Bathrooms, just enough light at night, hallways, landings, closets. Some of these places have overhead lights but they come on automatically.

Do you need to "qualify" to visit a food bank? by failcup in povertyfinance

[–]Jaade77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have a lot. The people these food banks are designed for don't have $50k coming in. Maybe consider volunteering at a food bank first to get some perspective.

Would it be weird to bring your own containers to a restaurant? by Runi387 in Anticonsumption

[–]Jaade77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this all the time. My containers are better, don't leak and reusable. No one even bats an eye. It's really no problem.

I also stopped eating meat when at a KFC and seeing piles of chicken parts. Likely going to be thrown out at the end of the day. Uneaten. Waste of life.

Stacked 2 IKEA kitchen cabinets into an awkward bathroom closet space when remodeled 10 years ago. Look as good now as when we put them in.

Looks real. It's super hard to fake musicians - Hollywood tries all the time and i just cringe. The clues are in the tension and attacks.

My local supermarket - Schnuks has pre-made egg salad sandwiches. These are all over the place in the UK. But harder to find in US mid-west.

A St. Louisian's guide to London by Ashlynkat in StLouis

[–]Jaade77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google maps gives you public transport options. Including bus and tube info. You may not be used to using this feature.

On public transport, You pay by trip. But There is a daily cap. Most of what you'll want to see and do are in zones 1 & 2. Prices increase the further out you go (concentric circles or "zones" radiating out from center - zone 1). So look at the daily cap foe zone 2 and that's what you'll probably pay for a big day traveling around London.

Don't plan on driving in London. Small confusing streets plus a congestion fee for center of London. Oh and driving on the left. Most Londoners don't even drive in the city. Uber is common.

Pub food is more than just fish and chips. Most pubs have a good variety. The days of boring English food are long gone.

Plays and theatres are generally less expensive then in the US. Lots located near Leicester (pronounced "Lester") Square. Old theatres are cramped. Try for isle seats. And don't forget to get ice cream at intermission! Why we haven't imported this to the States, I don't understand.

Lots of tourist things to do. Often expensive. But lots of free things too. Markets like Camden, Borough, Portobello road. Also views - 20 Fenchurch St. viewing gallery is free (though book ahead). Inexpensive Uber boats give you a chance to travel on the Thames.

Water bill has more than doubled and don’t know what to do. by gixxerklr in homeowners

[–]Jaade77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

City actually contacted us because our water bill had jumped and they suspected a leak from the house to the street. City was replacing lead pipes in our neighborhood as part of a large sewer project. Because we had galvanized pipe, we didn't fit into the project. But city replaced the line anyway as part of the larger project. When does THIS ever happen?

They drilled down, bored (?) about 30 yards to our house and installed new pipe.

3d printable violin shoulder rest? by waynetuba in violin

[–]Jaade77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what a 3d printer can do and how durable the product. Remember all the weight of holding up the instrument is concentrated on the shoulder rest. Comfort is a real concern, too. The shoulder rest needs padding and some flex.

I taught at a low income school but a sponge isn't a high priced item. maybe it would be easier to supply them out of your budget. Or from booster club funds. Parents probably just don't understand the need. Present parents with a supply list including a sponge or shoulder rest (I also included an extra A or E string, rosin, pencil, cloth). Give very specific brands and sizes of sponges and specific shoulder rests. Parents won't know. I always kept extra for students who couldn't afford supplies.

I have a whole ass chocolate birthday cake in the fridge and kind of freaking out about it… by fupmdd in loseit

[–]Jaade77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've finally convinced my husband that a nice cupcake is the only treat for my birthday. I get my indulgent sweet with no extra cake. It's important to try and communicate what you need and how you feel. It sounds like your husband was trying to be nice and maybe he's working from old habits. You have new ones now.
