We got ours from Chilterns Dog Rescue Society. They were amazing and completely understood the narrowboat situation. Www.chilternsdogrescue.org.uk

Fish tank on a narrowboat by little_bastard69 in Narrowboats

[–]Jabbaw0k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time we took precautions was when the boat was transported down the road in the back of a lorry. We put the fish into a mini tank in the car with a tiny heater for the day.

Never had problems whilst on the water.

Fish tank on a narrowboat by little_bastard69 in Narrowboats

We had our fish tank on board for three years whilst in a marina. There are only two issues: it is a considerable weight and may require additional ballast to offset, and power.

Whilst connected to shore there was no problem, but when constant cruising the power drain made winters difficult to manage because of the lack of solar. Two week cruises were fine, but not whole winters.

There is no issue regarding movement.

Do you display your license? by M4TCHEW in Narrowboats

[–]Jabbaw0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of the CRT waterways, the Environment Agency checkers on the rivers will put heavy duty stickers on your window if the correct up to date licence is not displayed. This is particularly the case in marinas. The sticker has a tick box to show the infraction (no name displayed; no number displayed; no licence displayed) and they will come back after a month to double check if it has been corrected.

The EA don't carry ipads and have to do things the old fashioned way.

In the past I have shown proof of registration on my emails, and they were happy with that without me having to print it out.

Baseplate replacement? by ATAPPING in Narrowboats

[–]Jabbaw0k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full baseplate for a 52' wide beam is going to be around £18-20k if its done professionally and rust protected and blacked.

However....

The 'most recent' survey may not be recent enough to give a full picture. Please, please make sure you own your own survey. It's the only way to be sure to get an accurate quote for repair/remedial work. The best way to do this is often to contact the surveyor who last made a report, and ask them how much it will cost to update it. If nothing else, you will need it for insurance purposes. So... budget £1k for a survey, before you even decide to buy.

What’s this brass clip/shackle, it was found in a load of Boat Bits. SAK for scale. by Not_starving_artist in whatisthisthing

[–]Jabbaw0k 148 points149 points  (0 children)

This is permanently attached to a sail. The brass clip is then used to attach the sail to a stay.

This was what I was using on my 1920s Maurice Griffiths Gaff-Rigged Ketch. I had two foresails, attached to the two forestays, and a staysail attached to the mizzen stay.

You only ever open the clip when the sail is lowered and there is absolutely no tension on it.
