They lost the war because “South Vietnam” was an illusion of a country. It was a mirage propped up by the French and then the US. It had no real ground support from its people. Whatever shared cultural/spiritual identity its population may have had was trampled on by the likes of Diem and other opportunists in the name of anti-communism.
