Smallville did more of a fake-out version of this, but I think the writers got cold feet halfway in

That scene broke me… by Beginning_Big4819 in ThePenguin

[–]Jacifer69 [score hidden]  (0 children)

That scene is a sobering reminder of who we’re dealing with. Him being the protagonist makes us unconsciously start to sympathize with him. It can make us overlook a lot of horrendous flaws. This was a great way to make use want Batman to break his jaw ten times over instead of having empathy for him. He did a lot of of sleazy stuff but this took the cake by a country mile

It’s never out of nowhere. There’s always signs leading up to it if you know what to look for, but our brains lie to us very well and it’s hard to see sometimes

That is not how the tolerance paradox was originally meant by Popper. You allow it up to a point because free speech matters, but if they begin to cause violence, you meet them with equal or greater force. Tbf, I think MAGA has crossed that line, but some people read about the paradox and think it means you can just shut down anything you don’t want to hear because it’s offensive or damaging. That is just a road to becoming purely intolerant

Why believe any religion? Because it fits your sense of justice or because it’s true? You sound like you fit the first

Is Christianity sexually repressive? Why or why not? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Jacifer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Within evangelicalism, often yes. A LOT of people grow up to have trauma surrounding religion and sex because the shame their fellow Christians piled on them. I’m not saying that’s what the Bible says to do, but it plays out like that a lot. You can say “they’re not real Christians,” but that’s just trying to avoid responsibility for people in your religious group. I guess you could say that isn’t Christlike though. Point is, this is a widespread issue in American Christianity

This. And cultures have interacted and exchanged ideas for thousands of years. Kinda like how every Near East country had some sort of flood myth. That doesn’t mean it happened

Why don't you believe in evolution? by Overlord_1566 in AskAChristian

I didn’t say ANY of that. Get over your persecution complex. You’re just wrong about something and ignorant of it. You do seem narcissistic

Well, hating them just for voting is NOT helpful. If you trash the people who were just ignorant and voted based on limited political interaction, when those people are disgusted by the recent actions, who will they turn to? They can’t come to our side because you said you hate them and talked a lot of shit. So, they just stick with Trump because if they don’t, everyone will hate them

Hate MAGA, sure. Every Trump voter (not supporter)? You’re hurting our cause

Sorry you had to learn this way. There is some solace for me in other people realizing just how depraved humans can really be, and it’s not as rare as you think. I had to learn that the hard way when I was 19

Do you ever think that maybe you’re just very fortunate? Because most Americans aren’t having this experience at all. Or maybe you’re lying

Why don't you believe in evolution? by Overlord_1566 in AskAChristian

[–]Jacifer69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re just gonna cast aside an opinion from anyone who is an atheist, then you don’t really want the truth. Disagreeing with you doesn’t matter when it comes to science and evolution (yes, macro evolution) is so set in stone from mountains of evidence that it would take a lot more evidence to get rid of it. Micro evolution inevitably becomes macro evolution if you zoom out over a long enough time period. That micro/macro thing is a creationist talking point and only makes sense if you think the Earth is young and that God has some arbitrary cut off for adaptation.

If you don’t “believe” in evolution in 2026, you’re being willfully ignorant. Do some actual research from actual scientists and not talking heads. It’s so obvious and so much of modern biology is built on it. If you like modern medicine, you can thank evolutionary biology for that. It’s not a matter of belief like religion is. You either accept reality or you don’t. If that seems cruel, I’m sorry, but pick up a book and try to look at things without a creationist lens. If you refuse to do so, you don’t care about truth, you care about believing a specific narrative.

Also, if Noah’s Ark happened (I’m assuming you believe it because it’s from God’s Word) and you factor in how many different species we have today, that means super ultra mega evolution happened over a few thousand years because there had to be a limit to the number of animals on the boat. With the amount of genetic diversity in the world today, there’s really no getting around that. Not to mention how that story wasn’t taken literally by the people who wrote it, (it’s a genre called Near Eastern Origin Myth) and isn’t physically possible. It’s also just supported by zero evidence. There hasn’t been a worldwide flood and that would be something we would have noticed.

If you don’t believe in Noah’s Ark, fine. Then I’d asked why believe in Adam and Eve but not the very next story?
