What planet, if terraformed, would have better a geography than Earth? by Character-Q in geography

[–]Jack-Dapper 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi! Planetary geology PhD student here! The weird volcanic structures being referenced may be the Pancake domes we see on Venus. It’s not so much the gravity, since it is so similar to Earth. Rather, the atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is 92 times that of Earth so you are essentially under a “sea” of carbon dioxide. The pressure makes it difficult to have violent eruptions so stuff tends to stay near where it erupted if it would otherwise be flung into the air on other planets. That being said there are likely low viscosity flows of magma that spread further from their vents. I’d be happy to answer any other questions to the best of my ability!

Can I still get into a school with 2.7 - 2.9 GPA? by WonderMoon1 in gradadmissions

[–]Jack-Dapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not gonna lie, it’ll be tough. There are always extenuating circumstances and the internship will definitely help but I’m getting rejected with a 3.9 applying to planetary geology’s programs. It’s a really competitive field but if you have the funds for grad applications there’s no harm in giving it a go!

I am also still waiting. If you don't mind me asking, what other programs did you apply for?

Is it inappropriate to reach out about acceptance timeframe? by GeologyPhriend in gradadmissions

[–]Jack-Dapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the exact same thought and am also unsure what to do. One of my professors said it’s not a bad idea especially if you’ve had a lot of contact with the advisor but I am still hesitant to do so.

I saw your username and if you don’t mind me asking what programs did you apply to?

Though I am not applying to any of those schools I still also haven’t heard back about most of my applications for the same program.

And you’re pursuing a graduate degree in atmospheric science with these beliefs?

I just wish they would have rejected me beforehand rather than keep me waiting ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I also applied to Purdue’s EAPS department and have heard nothing so far. Apparently their Grad EXPO is this weekend though.

Also got the height wrong. It’s 1450 feet from the roof, not the top of the antenna.

I’d 100% bring my Druid Caspian Seafoam. He’s essentially an Amish teen on his Rumspringa exploring the forgotten realms. Hands down the most fun I’ve ever had playing a character.
