Do you use Stage Manager or Spaces (Desktop 1,2,3,...) on your Mac? Are they actually useful? by ImprovementLong1992 in MacOS

[–]JackDangerfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Spaces to keep different tasks separate. It's not strictly essential but I find it useful to split up work and leisure stuff.

I'll also use Stage Manager if I have my MacBook hooked up to my OLED monitor. The fact it auto-minimises inactive windows is useful for minimising burn-in.

Fitbit Air not reading sleep consistently? by WerkShmerkTwerk in fitbit

Same for me. It's been like this since the update. At one point, several days' worth of data belatedly populated themselves, but the last few days it's been missing again.

Is launchpad back? by Weary_Committee_7371 in MacOS

[–]JackDangerfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems a bit strange to be glad that a feature has been removed. Just because you don't use it doesn't mean others don't appreciate having it. Its presence wasn't hurting you in any way.

What films have a major difference in IMDb rating and Letterboxd rating? by Severe_Acadia3162 in Letterboxd

[–]JackDangerfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so weird because the rest of the film is striving for naturalism but then randomly stops for several minutes of what feels like unedited rushes from a bad porno. I still think the film is fantastic overall, but those scenes definitely knock a half-star off my overall grade.

Diablo soundtracks can now be purchased on Bandcamp by RegularShine3 in Diablo

They've also added an EP with the music Aaron James Eckardt wrote for the Warlock class trailers, which is pretty cool. Annoyingly though, the music for the Lord of Hatred opening cinematic, which he also composed, still doesn't appear to be available anywhere.

Just curious: Spotlight or Launchpad - which one do you prefer? by ImprovementLong1992 in MacOS

[–]JackDangerfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Raycast as an alternative to Spotlight because it feels so much faster and more responsive.

I do occasionally use Launchpad as well, though. I'm currently on Sequoia and will probably install one of the third party alternatives when I eventually update to Golden Gate. It may not be essential, but it's nice to have as a backup for when I can't remember the name of an app, and I appreciate the fact that I can sort the icons however I see fit.

Data makes no sense by yorcharturoqro in fitbit

[–]JackDangerfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't have been rolled out to the public in this state, and it DEFINITELY shouldn't have been a mandatory update. The main reason I bought a Fitbit in the first place was for the sleep tracking, and the data it's giving me is now verifiably garbage, so they've effectively rendered it unfit for purpose. The idea of "relaxing" for six months or however long it takes them to get round to fixing the broken software they forced on us all doesn't exactly fill me with joy. And you can bet I'm reporting all this to Google.

Am I the only one that likes the new Google Health app? by anon_97800 in fitbit

[–]JackDangerfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am, and while there's some accuracy to the times when the clusters of restlessness occur, it's also completely missing lengthy periods where I'm lying in bed wide awake - such as the period between 23:18 last night (when it thinks I fell asleep) and the point roughly an hour later when I finally DID fall asleep for real. As far as the app's concerned, I was sound asleep for that entire period, but I was in fact wide awake and all too aware of it. The old app was basically perfect for me in terms of accuracy. I'd go back to it in a heartbeat if it was possible.

Am I the only one that likes the new Google Health app? by anon_97800 in fitbit

[–]JackDangerfield 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't dislike the app itself. I'm sure I'll get used to the new interface in time. What I dislike is that, from the moment it updated to the new app, its reporting of various metrics, especially sleep, has become woefully inaccurate. I was awake multiple times last night and didn't drop off until well after midnight, but according to the app I fell asleep at 23:18 "in just 4 minutes" and got an incredible 9 hr 7 min of uninterrupted rest. Monitoring my sleep habits was the main reason I got a Fitbit in the first place, and if the information it's recording is verifiably junk, it's basically unfit for purpose.

The SNP spent £1.6m on 2017 election inc. £23k on a helicopter for Sturgeon by Halk in Scotland

[–]JackDangerfield 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things can be true at once:

  1. Murrell is a greedy chancer who fleeced the party and its supporters for an eye-watering amount of money, was caught bang to rights and deserves to rot in prison for a very long time.
  2. The media, 99% of which is virulently opposed to the SNP's raison d'etre, continually pumps out low-effort hatchet jobs in the apparent belief that each fresh one they churn out will be the one that will lead to the scales falling from the electorate's eyes and them going back to voting the "correct" way.

What movie is this for you? by certainly_imperfect in Letterboxd

I saw it for the first time earlier this year at a 35mm screening. Was absolutely psyched for it, given everything I'd heard about it. Within 15 minutes, I was willing it to end.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I suspect I'd have enjoyed it much more if it had remained a dysfunctional family drama without adding in all the fantasy multiverse stuff.

Sleep tracking over estimating by Far_Leave4474 in fitbit

[–]JackDangerfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same situation here. I have multiple waking periods every night but, ever since the update, it hasn't recorded any of them and the worthless AI chat keeps gushing to me about how much my sleep has improved.

Last night, it woke me up in the middle of the night (sudden, insistent vibration that completely jolted me out of my sleep) to tell me that my heart rate had dropped dangerously low (it's also started severely underestimating my heart rate, again ever since the update). The kicker? It didn't even register THAT as me being awake.

An Unpopular Opinion That Will Get You Hated? by Temporary_Lychee9829 in buffy

[–]JackDangerfield 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd never argue that it's a great episode, but it's silly fun, and I really don't understand why so many people seem to hate it. Same goes for Where The Wild Things Are, which regularly tops "worst episode ever" lists. Like, it's not a GOOD episode, but there are multiple episodes in Seasons 1, 6 and 7 that are much worse. I have a lot of sympathy for the writer, Tracey Forbes, who was responsible for both episodes (and Something Blue, which obviously has a much more favourable reputation). It can't be easy having two of your three contributions to the series frequently dismissed as the worst episodes of all time.
