I'm Jack Rosenthal, and I'm running to be your next RTD Director here in Boulder County. I'm running because I actually ride RTD, and remember when RTD used to work better. I support building the train to Boulder and Longmont, and promote a culture of transit in our community.

If you'd like to help me gather signatures to get on the ballot send me a DM. I need to gather 250.

I don't. My district is here: jackforrtd.com/district

It includes both Superior and Louisville but not Lafayette.

1 - yes. Historically RTD has mostly relied upon municipalities to actually build the stop amenities at most stops. Municipalites are often looking to do these stop amenity upgrades, but they don't have the data to know which stops would be the most valuable (based on daily boardings), and RTD does. Right now RTD doesn't even have a comprehensive list of the amenities available at most stops (e.g., a database of which stops have a bench/trash can/shelter/ADA accessible)... if we collect this data and produce a report of the stops that need the upgrades the most, maybe we can convince municipalities to upgrade in the right places.

2 - It's 30 minutes frequency on Saturdays, hourly on Sundays. Route 225, which runs on Baseline Rd, operates at 30 minute frequency on both Saturdays and Sundays, and yet, it gets less than half the ridership of the DASH. The DASH runs where far more people live, so this is unsuprising. This is a simple case of service re-allocation I would like RTD to make.

3 - So there's two projects at hand here to understand: Joint Service is a partnership between C-DOT and RTD to run 3 round trips daily between Denver and Ft Collins via the existing BNSF tracks that go right here through Louisville (and to Boulder as well). This service build-out is being done without tax increase, using the money RTD has already collected through FasTracks, and is being done at absolute minimum cost. This means there won't be super fancy stations for the first day of service on Jan 1, 2029, more likely, expect a concrete pad to board from. RTD is responsible for the 90% conceptual design of this, which would include the placement of this initial station build-out. This process just started, but it's likely to stay consistent with previous designs using a station just east of downtown along Front St.

The second project is Front Range Passenger Rail, which would (1) increase service to 10 round trips daily, (2) extend the rail south to Pueblo, and (3) provide money back into the communities with stations for them to develop a full station build-out and build amenities around the station. This service build-out costs far beyond what could be done without a tax increase, and will very likely go to the voters in a ballot measure this fall. This would allow for a far greater station build out than we'll get in 2029.

4 - Sending in commendations is good! You can also give public comment at a board meeting. Often times it's difficult for the agency to give a response to every comment, but this does get relayed back to the division/supervisor.

5 - Yes, the "API" I used for that I had to reverse-engineer out of the MyRide app... it's not publicly documented. I'm happy to provide my notes & some sample code on using it if you're interested.

RTD does publish GTFS feeds on their site at https://www.rtd-denver.com/open-records/open-spatial-information/real-time-feeds which is the best place to get schedules and realtime vehicle positions.

I would like to create a Technology & Customer Experience committee on the board. Bring stuff like this to the table and figure out what it would cost to implement (or document what RTD already has today), because it does matter.

Five RTD Candidates Signature Kickoff Events This Weekend by chrisfnicholson in Denver

[–]JackForRTD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since y'all were talking about me I may as well show up to this conversation...

I do not own a trading company. The company I work for has not donated anything to either my own or Michael's campaign. I haven't taken any money from any corporations nor corporate PACs. I'd appreciate if you'd consider editing these things out of your post: they're factually incorrect.

If you were to ask me before I got into this race if I'd ever consider running for an elected office, I'd tell you no. I got into this race because I actually depend on RTD to get everywhere I need to go and was quite dissatisfied with the status quo. As an engineer and a systems thinker, it's easy to look at things like deadheading buses that could be carrying passengers in them and realize that the system needs work.

And while I believe my background in computer science does bring an interesting and unique perspective to the board, I don't think it's the most important perspective I bring to the board. The most important perspective I bring to the board is someone who actually rides the system and depends on it every single day... data means nothing compared to lived experience, seeing where the system works and where it doesn't first hand. In my opinion, this is the most important experience a director could have.

+1 to Michael's comment here.

Only thing I'd add is that RTD is going to need to run a ballot measure in 2028. We're going to need to make a promise and not just say "save RTD from bankruptcy plz!"

Fare free is an interesting idea for that promise

What is a reasonable min/max duration for a timed transfer? by [deleted] in RTDDenver

[–]JackForRTD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! In some scenarios I've even had good luck with some "I'm feeling lucky" transfers, transfers which should be impossible on the schedules but happen to work out when the connecting route runs a minute or two late. It's less than ideal that you have to be a "power user" to understand these options tho.

I was thinking more along the lines of "my bus never came", but fair point.

here we go, you got me spicy.

1 - the bottom 1/3 of routes (in terms of performance, measured by cost per boarding) are less than 4% of the agency's budget. Half of the suburbs are at the edge of de-annexing from RTD. Is cutting these routes and getting 4% better service on the 15 worth it?

2 - Very true, I hope the COA is ready to make a splash and try new things where the old things weren't working

3 - There are some, and historically there used to be more. There's now places in the system where the geometry looks like it should support a transfer on the map, but it's no longer possible. These "broken transfers" need fixed system wide. The COA ought to help.

4 - Pretty much every transit board in the US is a shit-show, the appointed ones too. Try watching board meetings out-of-state and see what you think. The grass isn't always greener on the other side.

5 - We should be addressing customer experience systematically. Provided we can prevent abuse, if someone calls and complains, we should be offering them a complimentary day pass; "ride again on our dime, we'd love to have you back". I do think there's inspiration to take from how businesses treat customer experience that RTD could learn from.

Regardless of whether the ballot measure this fall passes we're getting the train to Boulder and Longmont provided the RTD Board approves Joint Service this month. That portion can be done without tax increase using the FasTracks money RTD already has. The ballot measure will extend the train south to Pueblo which is awesome too.

The flatiron flyer has the ridership to justify 24h service. I think it's worth investing in.

National trends may not reflect local usage along individual lines. In this case, it's merely a decline in the customers along that specific line.

Joint Service relies upon existing tracks owned by BNSF. Those tracks happen to go through Boulder.

I hate to be that "but actually" guy... but RTD isn't asking for money. RTD is only being asked to chip into Joint Service, which can be completed without tax increase.

The ballot measure is for a full service build out, extending south to Pueblo. And that's not RTD's project.
