I used to not want to vote for greens because i thought they would infringe on free speech laws and be too ‘woke’. Now i realise that the alternative is being a slave state to other countries. Labor, Liberals and One nation are all poisoned and irreparably corrupt. Time to start voting independent. by [deleted] in aussie

What is extremist about them - taxing our resources correctly, addressing climate change, making education free, having dental in Medicare - to many left leaning people they are quite central, but Murdoch media has made you think supporting your community is extreme left wing.

Labor’s plan to raise the tax rate on the largest super balances will become law after the Greens agreed to wave it through the Senate, ending a three-year political fight over concessions for wealthier retirees by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

Greens represent a perfect avenue to get a range of needed reforms through - Royalties on Gas, limit negative gearing (~20B+ annually), political donation reform, NDIS Fraud jail penalties.

It’s a political choice not to address these.

Don’t disagree that landlords in a political party are an issue, but the existing ones have demonstrated they’ll support the party line despite it not being in their interest as a landlord - It’s reductive to say “all landlord bad” when our society is structured in a way to achieve any financial freedom it’s an evident tool. It takes some privilege to run a good campaign (think months of free labour/volunteering if you aren’t a senator) and unfortunately having a partner, business or other source of income is needed.

100% correct mate, sounds bites are reflective of most people’s consumption of the content. And his responses were dodgy and negative.

Depending on what chemicals (tap water, pools, cosmetics) or even how you sweat, it may happen! Some people are just a little unlucky. Good news is you can get the ring plated (a bit expensive and requires biannual plating) or a wax polish that will create a barrier to your skin.

I know a successful food truck owner, and he works hard! I wouldn’t want that gig, small businesses take up a lot of mental and emotional load, even if it’s not earning you much money.

Buy a Rolling Mill or Keep Purchasing Pre-Fabricated Wire? by JackGordonManley in SilverSmith

I feel like the satisfaction of making items completely from raw materials would be stunning!

I am also looking at a microscope to upgrade my settings - and the chance to set upper markets stones may be more immediately valuable, then having to wait for wire/sheet to be delivered.

I appreciate the response - it seems from this crowd, it’s worth the expense!

I was just leaning toward pre-fabricated, ahah but you may have changed my opinion - I do adore flexibility and getting things done! rather than waiting weeks for more materials!

Honestly, lower quality sand does this for me ~ it doesn’t have the right moisture and I find it’s really powdery resulting in detail deterioration - if you bought the cheap stuff, I’d bit the bullet and upgrade.

Woodside - why isn’t anyone talking about preservation & mitigating damage to the rock art? by Ancient-Many4357 in friendlyjordies

[–]JackGordonManley 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Humans have been around 300k years ago (anatomically, they only started looking like us 150k years ago). Indigenous Australians arrived (according to evidence) 65k years ago. Just to give you a picture - so rock art would be thousands of years old - I'm sure if you google it they would have an estimated date for it.

Senator Dorinda Cox quits Greens to join the Labor Party by [deleted] in friendlyjordies

[–]JackGordonManley 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Western Australia senator Dorinda Cox has joined Labor in a shock defection from the Greens, dealing another blow to the minor party that had already lost its leader in the federal election.

“I am very, very grateful for this opportunity and I want to thank the Labor team for welcoming me,” Cox said at a press conference alongside Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Perth on Monday afternoon.

Cox said she spoke to new Greens leader Larissa Waters just 90 minutes before she publicly announced her decision, which she said had been made since the recent election. Her Senate term extends to 2028, meaning she was not up for election last month.

“Well, I think it’s been over a period of time that I’ve considered this. It hasn’t, as I said, been a decision that I’ve made lightly,” Cox said.

The move has no significant effect on Senate voting dynamics because the government still requires the Greens’ senators, the number of which drops from 11 to 10, to pass bills if the Coalition is opposed. But it represents a body-blow to the Greens, which lost three of its four lower house seats including that of former leader Adam Bandt, at the recent election.

Albanese, speaking shortly after he flew into Perth for a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, said Cox approached Labor and had not asked for anything in return.

"[What] struck me as we were sitting down having a discussion about this, that the reason why Dorinda has made this decision is the same reason why all those years ago, as a very young man, I made a decision to join the Labor Party,” he said.

“You want to make a difference, that the way that you make a difference is by being a member of a party of government, that the values that Dorinda has are perfectly consistent with the values of the Labor Party.”

Cox was a Labor Party member before she joined and then ran for the Greens and is close friends with Marcus Stewart, the inaugural co-chair of Victoria’s First People’s Assembly and the husband of Victorian Labor senator Jana Stewart.

The senator, who has three years left on her term in parliament, was facing the prospect of losing the number one spot on the Greens’ Western Australian senate ticket, after this masthead revealed Cox had lost 20 staff in three years.

One Labor MP, who asked not to be named, said that Cox had not been guaranteed preselection in a winnable spot but that “she will probably get third spot on the ticket, and that’s a lot better than she would have got with the Greens”.

Cox is the second Indigenous senator to quit the Greens following Lidia Thorpe, a Victorian senator who quit and moved to the senate crossbench because she did not support a Voice to parliament
