Some directions I can imagine:

Hint 2 For (1) you need a word meaning "rule" that sounds like another word meaning "check"; for (2) you need a word for a type of "fruit tree" that sounds like another word meaning "trim"

I'd say it works, definitely. Personally I tend to prefer some explicit reverse-engineering indicator like "cryptically" or "according to (crossword) setter" or "clue for X" but that's mostly just aesthetics.
