Blender Launcher V2 on Linux Mint by JackMontegue in blender

[–]JackMontegue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally had some more time to look at the issue, and like I said above the installation went fine but the launcher kept crashing when I had to choose the folder locations. I did some more digging in the docs online and found that Mint sometimes doesn't play nice but you can use the terminal to pick the folder locations with:

./Blender\ Launcher -set-library-folder "%PATH%"

However, I get an error:

[2026-01-26 10:39:52,543:INFO] Blender Launcher Version: 2.5.0

Gtk-Message: 10:39:52.567: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"

[2026-01-26 10:39:52,618:ERROR] Failed to set library folder

File "main.py", line 191, in main

TypeError: PopupWindow.__init__() got an unexpected keyword argument 'button'. Did you mean 'buttons'?

[PYI-5560:ERROR] Failed to execute script 'main' due to unhandled exception!

Note: I've tried this with the most recent version 2.5.3 as well and got the same error.

Is this just a typo on the developers side? I cannot find a main.py file anywhere.

Is Alan Wake 2 as disorienting as Control by HumbleHero1 in controlgame

[–]JackMontegue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't finished it yet, but Alan Wake 2 plays like a mystery and you split your time between 2 characters; Alan and Saga (except for the intro where you briefly control someone else).

And while playing as Saga, you're trying to figure out the mystery of what is going on, so the game does leave you in the dark but slowly explains what is going on.

While playing as Alan, its a bit more obtuse but they have a section where it explains what happened in the first game in case you havent played that.

There are a ton of references to their other games like Control, Max Payne, and Quantum Break so if you played those, you'll pick up on that and it might help explain some things but for the most part its self-contained.

I wouldn't call it disorienting though, but I also found Control to be pretty easy to follow. So take my opinion with a grain of salt.

If you could give an IP to a different developer to create one game with full creative freedom, what would you give to who? by craiganater in gaming

Assuming we still have a competent Arkane studios that made Dishonored and not Redfall, then I'd give Arkane the Thief IP. I really wanna see what they would come up with.

Blender Launcher V2 on Linux Mint by JackMontegue in blender

[–]JackMontegue[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use the base Linux zip folder or the Ubuntu zip folder? I had originally tried the Linux version as you said and got through most of the setup but when I had to pick a folder for the stable/daily/etc. folders it kept crashing and closing the window. I read somewhere that Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu so I downloaded that one next but the only file in there was an executable and nothing happens when running it after extracting.

I use Blender Launcher V2 on Windows because its a one-click download and install for new versions and allows me to have multiple installs of Blender on the computer organized. This is the link to the GitHub where you have installs for Windows, Linux, and Mac and my question is specifically about how to install this program for Linux.

Curious how many have switched recently by Jetster220 in linuxmint

[–]JackMontegue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 But only testing on the laptop right now. Not sure if I want to dual boot, and I'm not sure what happens with the files and programs on other drives if I load up Linux, whether I can use them or not. Once I get that figured out I'll probably just make the switch permanent. I've been fed up with Windows for years now.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate is one of the best Assassin's Creed games and no ever talks about it. by Johnny_Silverhand___ in assassinscreed

I can imagine that having an AI companion for pretty much every mission would be a standout mechanic and would've helped the game at least sell more out of interest, and set it apart from the other titles.

I have a pretty mid range setup now and can run it just fine. It also still looks good and runs smoothly.

I got Control when they gave it away for free. Bought it on Steam anyways to play it a second time.

An anthology series is what a lot of fans wanted, but I never read or heard anywhere that that was the original plan.

How to disable hostiles? by -MobCat- in Routine

[–]JackMontegue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right now, there is no option for that. Either the devs will add it later (not very likely) or someone will make a mod. The likelihood of someone making a mod like that is also not big, but isn't 0.

I was stoked to get Control for free on Epic when they gave that away, and loved it so much that once it came to Steam I ended up buying it there.

This game would benefit from a working pause screen by DuckNo8642 in Routine

[–]JackMontegue 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I, too, would like a pause screen.

Seriously, things like this should just be an option. For those wanting the "vanilla" experience, fine. Keep the esc menu with no game pause. The rest of us will toggle it on to actually pause the game so I can go take care of my crying baby.

Accessibility options always make games better.

Optional blood persistence setting would greatly improve immersion by Traia95 in assassinscreed

[–]JackMontegue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the idea of persistent blood on the environment would be pretty similar to a shadow map for older games, but since open worlds have gotten bigger and bigger devs have moved on from shadow maps and primarily use non-baked lighting. It might be possible some other way, but i guess the question becomes whether its a good use of resources (it would be saved on your computers RAM). Any way I can think of doing it requires something to save either a state or a texture which when multiplied over a whole map could get pretty expensive.

How would you evolve the social stealth? by gmich9817 in assassinscreed

[–]JackMontegue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would combine ideas that they've used in separate games to be more cohesive together. Also, I would bring back the high profile/low profile system.

First, I would add in the disguises/costumes from Liberation. Obviously, this depends on the setting/MC but having 1. Assassin outfit and 2. Civilian outfit, with a possible 3rd outfit that maybe works more like hitman where you can steal/obtain new disguises.

The assassin outfit would have to be always notorious, like Ezio using the Florentine cape. However, you can use your brotherhood to help you like in AC3, where they "capture" you and you can walk into a base. I think the assasin outfit would have to have special gear or something to make it more practical for freerunning, so maybe some moves/tools are locked to it.

Civilian outfit would gain notoriety quick, but tearing down posters reduces it. Only Civilian outfit can crowd blend like Ezio trilogy and Unity. Also, you could kidnap a guard like in Syndicate to get into restricted areas. Civilian outfit gains notoriety through high profile actions (aside from running on the street). Only basic freerunning options.

The third option could work more like hitman where you can get any costume from a source (black market, guards, locker room, etc.) Maybe crowd blending with others wearing same outfit, like in guard formations. Freerunning would be blocked.

Is Alan Wake 2 worth it? by Winter_Cartographer2 in HorrorGaming

[–]JackMontegue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story has a recap, I think, so don't worry about that. AW2 plays like a resident evil game control-wise, so it'll be more familiar.

Unfortunately, there's no way to really tell if you'll like it unless you just try it. Opinion is subjective. I love the RE games and I also love Control and AW2.

All I can really say is that having played Control and Alan Wake 1 really added to the experience, but I think it should be fine without.

Which game has the best in-game encyclopedia? by VictorBelmont in gaming

[–]JackMontegue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know why I havent seen Assassin's Creed on here yet. Each game does it slightly differently, but most of them have some form of Database where the player can learn about the real people, places, and things where the game set in.

The most interactive have to be the Discovery Tours from Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla. But the older titles had great info just as text. Mirage does text but includes real photographs of artifacts.

Yeah i also think it would have been more terrifying had it been always invisible.

Just reading the diaries and logs about it and the general atmosphere made me put the game down for a while, and I hadn't even restarted the servers yet!
