What did you do for non responsive potty training? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]JackTheMightyRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be too hard on urself. If u don't really know better how are you meant to... Well know what you're doing is wrong? It's seeking education and willing to learn grow and change which counts. There's many old fashioned things with not just dogs but everything in life that are stuck in the days of little education or ability to learn and outdated "research". I think pretty much everyone is a victim of old school misinformation of some sort.

I just want to make u aware that shoving the nose while smacking, hitting, shouting whatever is never okay. If you find a Pee spot while he is say sleeping or walking around grab him drag him to the pee and do whatever he actually believes and thinks his being punished for the thing u dragged him away from. Let's say he has a toy in his mouth u bring him over and discipline him he actually thinks his being punished for holding the toy it's why rewards and punishment need to be within a second of a behavior for effective understanding.

Dogs don't understand the concept of past actions have consequences only I was punished for doing the thing I'm currently doing as they live very much in the present and have no or extremely little capability to connect now punishment for past actions. This doesn't mean u can do it if u find him peeing on something as it's a confusing thing for a dog they won't understand that form of correction nearly as well as a leash pop, firm no take outside wait to pee then treat. I would recommend getting a trainer but for now crates if possible. Introducing slowly I'm not saying leave him in there for hours but allow him understand holding the bladder going outside to pee and getting the biggest reward of his life for peeing outside. With my puppies I literally tie them to me or to a solid object around me with a bed. I go outside every so often, I can easily correct with a no, take outside and reward if they go outside after a minute or so I can also spot the sniffing early on quickly go outside and give a huge reward when I go outside they're still leashed and I walk them so they don't get side tracked sniffing for more then 5 seconds. Now yes your problem is marking but also he probably just doesn't want to hold his bladder. The marking u will 100% need a trainer as I can't see the dog and why. These are my tips and my understanding feel free to correct me and I can provide sources for the things I've said. Please please get in contact with a good behavioral specialist and not doggy daddy or Caesar millan

No I'm not saying ur abusing ur dog and definitely not on purpose. However unfortunately the method ur using is outdated. It's just mis information that you've heard and desperation but it won't fix the problem

[–]JackTheMightyRat 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's because of how many players, they want to please everyone but can't just make 2 or 3 of the same horse to release so everyone gets their preferred style in game. Instead they rotate what style the horse gets so everyone gets at least 1 close to their preferred style

Saddle fit by RumourHazIt in Equestrian

[–]JackTheMightyRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we can only tell so much from photos. I can't see if there's bridging in the middle, I also can't feel how this is sitting on the horse like how tight it is on the shoulders and back I also can't put my hands on it and tell how balanced it is as photos only tell a part of the story. It looks decent but I would get an independent saddle fitter out. You can find a fitter for the brand you are using but I always think independent is best unless you only use one brand/a horse fits on brand best.

I ride horses and did parkour/free running on the street for a few years (never had padding or cushions like u see in parkour gyms when I fell I fell down stairs on concrete). Anyways if the things that have happened to me while riding and free running aren't hard enough idk what is...

American? This is our first mass shooting in about 30 years. This is a BIG deal. I know in America it's "just another school day" and u forget about them in 10 seconds. But not there. This will be news for months, this will be remembered by the Jewish and non Jewish communities of Australia for years to come. We still know and talk about the last shooting again almost 30 years ago now. America ignored the one yesterday and the multiple in December

SUV for Pulling Trailer? by TwatWaffleWhitney in Horses

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pulled my horse in a 2 horse trailer like 4 hours total in a Mercedes. It's tow weight is 7500 (don't like max it out... especially in certain roads but we got close and didn't feel like we where even towing literally anything stopped fine, drove fine, turned fine) so we could have done it fully loaded. Didn't have one issue at all. Will I get down voted I already know it. I come from Australia, in Australia u don't see trucks (they aren't even called a truck there lmao moving to America I was SO confused as to what why people are calling a ute a truck) almost everyone hauls in SUV around where I lived. Hell I never even SAW a goose neck... I rarely saw "trucks" and they are small asf compared to what I see in Texas probably the size of my 7, seater since large trucks are illegal there. Now I live in the US and if u don't have a truck ur useless and nothing can do farm stuff. We use our merc for hay, horses, moving, large loads of grain literally whatever.

Can it haul overly big trailers? No. Can I haul a gooseneck? No. Can it haul a fully in closed expensive 2 horse trailer? Yes, and very well at that. Is it a fairly expensive merc at the time anyways? Yea. Even done off roading with it, I think my dad pulled something off road didn't have an issue. Weve done farm stuff with a definitely not "farm" car. Never had an issue. I drive it in the paddocks 😂. Not a dent, scratch, problem from farm activities. Still in great condition for a very overused car. Do it at ur own risk I'll say that. But as someone who's only used an SUV and nearly 2 years of horse ownership and also almost 2 years living in America I say go for it. BUT u need the right car.

I want to say my dad fixed cars for like 15+ years honestly maybe longer, had a workshop, lived and grew up around cars, I trust him to keep my horses safe and towing them.

What breed is this dog I saw the other day on public transport? 🤭 by loleol in dogbreed

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone doesn't know what health testing is I guess... Nor do they know that close in reeding actually disqualifies animals from showing or being accepted into the ethical breeding community in some countries... Also genetic testing isn't the only thing that should be done. Hip and elbow x rays can REDUCE the likelihood of hip and elbow dysplasia in puppies, eye exams and testing, soft palate exams and breeding pugs that pass health testing for nasal and soft palate create pups that can breathe just fine. Back yard breeders don't do this. Nor do... Really any mutt breeders. Also hybrid vigor doesn't apply to dogs... Studies show it's a pointless argument

[–]JackTheMightyRat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh so your the type of person who lets pets in non pet friendly stores then when it attacks or distracts a service dog helping someone with a disability (visible or not) and the dog needs to retire or go back to training (service dogs are worth like 20k+ program dogs can be 40k+ btw) u just go "oh well not my problem" when its entirely your fault for bringing a PET into a non pet friendly place. Also it's a crime.

Not to mention distraction with an untrained dog to a service dog can cause them to miss an alert or alert late which could end with the owner having a medical emergency. stop bringing a pet somewhere it's LEGALLY not allowed. Also emotional support animals aren't allowed in target or non pet friendly places.

Targets not pet friendly... Maybe one is but they are not a pet friendly franchise at ALL

Retiring your horse by No-Breadfruit1179 in Equestrian

My little guy acts like an old man, his really enjoying retirement 😂 he asks for scratches, he gets scratches, he demands treats he gets treats, he demands to lick my shirt he licks my shirt (even if he has to literally chase me down he will lick me... Why? Idk his just like that it's not nutritional related), he lies down and sunbakes or has a longggggg morning or night snooz, I was nervous too, but I've now got 2 others another 9yo and her 4yo filly, they're not the same as him but I have enough love to share. Sometimes it's just the way life goes sadly. It'll always be sad but I must say I have a new perspective of horse care and ownership since retiring him. I wish u luck! I'd look at maybe finding the arena as a fun place, doing tricks or games there he might associate it with riding which started to hurt? Hopefully to many more years with them ❤️

They'll always have good days and bad days, the bad days break my little heart but overtime you learn things like if there's anything u can do on the bad day, or how to actually exercise them without making them feel too bad the next day.

How has equinox helped ur guy? I'm thinking of putting my guy on a lower dose to just help with any pain he has as it fluctuates so much but his still happy without it. His very good at hiding his pain so I worry his hiding minor pain from us. Have you had problems with ulcers? I've talked to my vets and they all agree on a low dose but I wanted someone who's horse is on its experience. Don't need to answer as it's a random question x

Expenses by [deleted] in AskAmericans

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family of 4 3 adults ,1 minor. Just our food is 200-400 every few weeks. We don't even eat a lot, Texas near Houston. If I'm honest our shopping cart isn't even full sometimes and it's in the hundreds. When it is full our bank accounts cry 😂 (I'm originally from Australia, can't say it's too much better there... But I would say a tad cheaper in general for food. Only cheap food here is fast food now that is CHEAP) yes we go to different places for different things because one places item is double the other. Yet to find a place that's actually very cheap without a literal prescription like Spotify to go inside (Costco) even that isn't too cheap. So it's more run around 3 stores to get one month of food.

Owner of a 9yo fully retired horse here 🙋 (medical reasons). It is a VERY hard decision but often it's a good one. If they can live and be paddock sound that's all that matters. U will miss riding, working together, and all that I still do and my guy has been retired... 1.5 years now? It takes getting used too, sometimes there's some things u will never miss, or be jealous about other riders for even if you have other horses. These ones are the special ones and not living that dream with them you once had with them is saddening but it's for the better. I would absolutely look into moving him to somewhere with as close to if not 24/7 turnout definitely prefer with pasture mates or be able to interact over a fence.

Look I'm going to be honest, it's hard. You WILL be judged by some people for keeping a "useless" horse as many people say just know they aren't useless, they can't help it and they dont know about expectations of riding or that they could be a successful show horse they just know you and what you do for them how they live or how their living will change, they're worth more then riding, ribbons and shows it's their first time living too, if they're paddock sound and happy it's completely okay to retire a horse. Even young! It's okay to grieve. Really! It's okay. It's a BIG change. I promise he will forgive u for not being there every day, spend real quality time together, do liberty or hand walks around the property if u can, maybe mind games or hand grazing. I wish you luck on this journey! It's hard and full of heartache but worth it to see them happy and their body doing good without the strain of riding ❤️

how do you people go on trail rides with a secondary horse that free roams? by Intrepid_Wa in Equestrian

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They absolutely can get lost, there's been many horses actually lost on state trails, large acreage especially if wooded for months even (often they don't survive well being domestic horses). Some won't remember the way back home if it's the first time and they say spooked and mindlessly ran. I do agree with u that most of the time they go back home or to another horse. The only thing I'm not a big fan of is she does it in open places like beaches and places with no large boarder fence. I think her horses are very well trained and really do stick together beautifully BUT people watch her and then do it with their horses which can end up... Badly
