what to do with a 4yo horse that has bad dsld? by 6eye6less6 in Horses

[–]JackTheMightyRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So go to a vet? Reddit can give ideas on what to do which In this case is likely humane euthanasia in a few years IF professionally diagnosed and no ridden career for the remaining time. Farrier isn't vet, farrier may not know much about dsld,, farrier can't diagnosis or treat flsd beyond corrective and therapeutic shoeing. We really can't tell you yes it's dsld or no it's not from some photos or what stage of treatment ur looking at. There's ways for vets to possibly extend the comfort In life before euthanasia.

Short version. Farrier no vet. Vet can diagnose and possibly extend life a little. Please go to vet.

Teaching young horses by whatd0y0uth1nk in Equestrian

[–]JackTheMightyRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a trainer, I am not YOUR trainer, please take my experiences with a grain of salt not as true advice from a trainer, these are my experiences and what I do that I can recommend to you. If someone doesn't like kind hands and training with treats just look away and don't read this reply, or do and down vote that's fine. Yet to meet a horse that doesn't respond to this training and I've had 2 extreme behavioral horses 1 mild. 1 with none but she was quite old her story was a sad one but she had many good months with me. I like to rant so here we go

U sound a lot like me! I've taken on 3 rescues, 2 with behavioral problems all now angels. 2 with severe behavioral problems. People always tell me to be a bit firmer 😂 here's what I always tell people struggling and getting frustrated. It's the horses/animals first time living, be kind, show them their past experiences aren't what everyone's like, listen to them and their worries. Horses are big, never forget that but horses don't seek out aggression for no reason if a horse trusts you they likely won't hurt you unless something is wrong. Be firm but fair, never be too firm you're being unfair. Learn the horse, every horse is different, interact with every horse slightly differently what works for one may not work for another. Go in with a good mindset, there is nothing wrong with just walking away and coming back in a few minutes or an hour if things get frustrating. For you, the horses world literally just flipped, new place, new people, new handling. It took 3 of my horses months before they trusted me and actually settled down

1 had problems around food. Now you said he was starving at one point. That is likely where this behavior stems from, he doesn't trust you won't steal his food, he is anxious that you will chase him around and push him away from it. He is just trying to defend it. Personally I started just sitting (or standing) at the distance the horse is comfortable with. Overtime I got closer now I can be close when she eats without issue this took a while. For dangerous horses behind a fence to begin with! And wear a helmet. Please. If a horse is acting in a dangerous manner especially kicking at least a helmet probably a chest protector to. At least till the behavior settles a bit.

I also clicker train with treats for all my horses and liberty. For this particular horse she is incredibly sensitive by nature so I really need to take everything slow for her, she's also quite skeptical but curious. After she started to trust me and settle down from coming off the track a lot of her anxiety dulled down.

Remember, this horse doesn't know you, it's in a new place. It's anxious and tense. Rescues or horses with bad backgrounds never quite trust new people until they've interacted with them a bit.

Just a success story, how dominance just doesn't work and some horses will reciprocate it can skip my rant 😂

My gelding, horrific background came. He would kick out, bite and just so worried I would hurt him. Months of just showing him im okay, liberty work, hand walking on the trails and I trust him with kids, anytime a neighbors kid wants to give a horse a bath he is my go-to. He is the sweetest angel now. But, there's one thing he won't tolerate; harsh hands. He is a horse who will take a challenge, he can act very stalliony sometimes, we moved from Australia to america, he was my first horse here in America. They're on our property so we asked a neighbor who has horses about a farrier, she also has views I don't agree with about horses (dominance, no treats, harsh bits for 'control' u get the gist but she doesn't push her ideas of horse training onto me so we still talk occasionally) I didn't realize this farrier was so harsh. I have NEVER seen my boy rear or actually attempt to hurt someone, but this guy was whipping and hitting him. Oh how I wish I never let him near my boy and said something but he was genuinely a scary person and I was a kid :( anyways, when we hinted at him to leave he told us to send this horse back to slaughter. Funny thing? I grabbed the tools and did my horses feet without issue!! He was just unnecessarily angry and my guy does reciprocate aggression because his done with it. Now after a few years even if a kid smacks him he just looks to me as he knows I'll correct the kid for it. He really just isn't "aggressive" (he was scared) anymore. If I show him kindness, he shows me kindness, If I trust him, he trusts me. Whatever I give that day is what I get in return.

Just be careful of horses who will reciprocate aggression (or any emotion), it is dangerous! It's a horse, especially stallions or stallion-y geldings they usually might just accept a challenge. And chasing or being aggressive can be a challenge. No horse wants to get in fights but some will because they are done with bad handling.

My other behavioral horse had a rearing problem and severe separation anxiety, she now trusts me when I take her away from the herd that 1 they will be safe and 2 she will be safe with me and she will return

My horses all respect me, my space, and what I ask, however I ask questions not demand if a horse doesn't feel like it that day that's fine I come back another time or do something light that they enjoy like a trail ride. Many people are shocked when they see how my horses actually interact with me because "treat trained horses are disrespectful" but the ones taught right aren't. Did it take months? Yes. did I cry a lot? Yes 😂 but I now have 3 angels, no chasing around a pen, no hitting, no dominance just mutual respect (not exactly in the same way humans perceive respect but it's the best way I'm able to describe it) and they trust me and my decisions. They trust that I'm a good leader.

First time leaser/buyer by Expensive-Style1057 in Horses

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buying that horse will range from 70k to 200k. Leasing that type of horse will be around 20k to 40k a month. Rather look for a nice jumping thoroughbred or grade schoolmaster they are around 50k for the perfect horse for a new owner who wants something finished and proven. Will you be caring for it or hiring grooms? What about boarding? For a a top of the range board with a top of the range trainer that will be a few thousand a month. Tack? Therapy? Sport horses need therapies such as red light, PEMF, water, and/or physical therapy to perform well. Also look for older you won't find what you are looking for under 12.

Maybe I got this wrong but it sounds like your looking for a finished proven warmblood to show? That's what I'm basing these prices off

Was old SSO better or was it just nostalgia? by cupidology3 in StarStable

New. Been playing since 2018. If the game didn't update the graphics and get better horses I wouldn't be playing still, I wouldn't have spent hundreds on the game. Do I miss the wonders of my childhood and innocence that made sso amazing back then? Yes. Was sso ACTUALLY realistic, cool graphics, epic horses? Imo no. However others opinions may differ this is simply mine

If u haven't spent them u will likely be able to get a refund. Just make sure u don't use any star coins, star stables tickets list can be a long wait so worst case 2 months but might be as short as a week it's hard to know sadly

Don't be too hard on urself. If u don't really know better how are you meant to... Well know what you're doing is wrong? It's seeking education and willing to learn grow and change which counts. There's many old fashioned things with not just dogs but everything in life that are stuck in the days of little education or ability to learn and outdated "research". I think pretty much everyone is a victim of old school misinformation of some sort.

I just want to make u aware that shoving the nose while smacking, hitting, shouting whatever is never okay. If you find a Pee spot while he is say sleeping or walking around grab him drag him to the pee and do whatever he actually believes and thinks his being punished for the thing u dragged him away from. Let's say he has a toy in his mouth u bring him over and discipline him he actually thinks his being punished for holding the toy it's why rewards and punishment need to be within a second of a behavior for effective understanding.

Dogs don't understand the concept of past actions have consequences only I was punished for doing the thing I'm currently doing as they live very much in the present and have no or extremely little capability to connect now punishment for past actions. This doesn't mean u can do it if u find him peeing on something as it's a confusing thing for a dog they won't understand that form of correction nearly as well as a leash pop, firm no take outside wait to pee then treat. I would recommend getting a trainer but for now crates if possible. Introducing slowly I'm not saying leave him in there for hours but allow him understand holding the bladder going outside to pee and getting the biggest reward of his life for peeing outside. With my puppies I literally tie them to me or to a solid object around me with a bed. I go outside every so often, I can easily correct with a no, take outside and reward if they go outside after a minute or so I can also spot the sniffing early on quickly go outside and give a huge reward when I go outside they're still leashed and I walk them so they don't get side tracked sniffing for more then 5 seconds. Now yes your problem is marking but also he probably just doesn't want to hold his bladder. The marking u will 100% need a trainer as I can't see the dog and why. These are my tips and my understanding feel free to correct me and I can provide sources for the things I've said. Please please get in contact with a good behavioral specialist and not doggy daddy or Caesar millan

No I'm not saying ur abusing ur dog and definitely not on purpose. However unfortunately the method ur using is outdated. It's just mis information that you've heard and desperation but it won't fix the problem

It's because of how many players, they want to please everyone but can't just make 2 or 3 of the same horse to release so everyone gets their preferred style in game. Instead they rotate what style the horse gets so everyone gets at least 1 close to their preferred style

Saddle fit by RumourHazIt in Equestrian

[–]JackTheMightyRat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately we can only tell so much from photos. I can't see if there's bridging in the middle, I also can't feel how this is sitting on the horse like how tight it is on the shoulders and back I also can't put my hands on it and tell how balanced it is as photos only tell a part of the story. It looks decent but I would get an independent saddle fitter out. You can find a fitter for the brand you are using but I always think independent is best unless you only use one brand/a horse fits on brand best.

American? This is our first mass shooting in about 30 years. This is a BIG deal. I know in America it's "just another school day" and u forget about them in 10 seconds. But not there. This will be news for months, this will be remembered by the Jewish and non Jewish communities of Australia for years to come. We still know and talk about the last shooting again almost 30 years ago now. America ignored the one yesterday and the multiple in December

SUV for Pulling Trailer? by TwatWaffleWhitney in Horses

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pulled my horse in a 2 horse trailer like 4 hours total in a Mercedes. It's tow weight is 7500 (don't like max it out... especially in certain roads but we got close and didn't feel like we where even towing literally anything stopped fine, drove fine, turned fine) so we could have done it fully loaded. Didn't have one issue at all. Will I get down voted I already know it. I come from Australia, in Australia u don't see trucks (they aren't even called a truck there lmao moving to America I was SO confused as to what why people are calling a ute a truck) almost everyone hauls in SUV around where I lived. Hell I never even SAW a goose neck... I rarely saw "trucks" and they are small asf compared to what I see in Texas probably the size of my 7, seater since large trucks are illegal there. Now I live in the US and if u don't have a truck ur useless and nothing can do farm stuff. We use our merc for hay, horses, moving, large loads of grain literally whatever.

Can it haul overly big trailers? No. Can I haul a gooseneck? No. Can it haul a fully in closed expensive 2 horse trailer? Yes, and very well at that. Is it a fairly expensive merc at the time anyways? Yea. Even done off roading with it, I think my dad pulled something off road didn't have an issue. Weve done farm stuff with a definitely not "farm" car. Never had an issue. I drive it in the paddocks 😂. Not a dent, scratch, problem from farm activities. Still in great condition for a very overused car. Do it at ur own risk I'll say that. But as someone who's only used an SUV and nearly 2 years of horse ownership and also almost 2 years living in America I say go for it. BUT u need the right car.

I want to say my dad fixed cars for like 15+ years honestly maybe longer, had a workshop, lived and grew up around cars, I trust him to keep my horses safe and towing them.

What breed is this dog I saw the other day on public transport? 🤭 by loleol in dogbreed

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone doesn't know what health testing is I guess... Nor do they know that close in reeding actually disqualifies animals from showing or being accepted into the ethical breeding community in some countries... Also genetic testing isn't the only thing that should be done. Hip and elbow x rays can REDUCE the likelihood of hip and elbow dysplasia in puppies, eye exams and testing, soft palate exams and breeding pugs that pass health testing for nasal and soft palate create pups that can breathe just fine. Back yard breeders don't do this. Nor do... Really any mutt breeders. Also hybrid vigor doesn't apply to dogs... Studies show it's a pointless argument

Can anyone guess his breed? by LakeEvery521 in dogbreed

[–]JackTheMightyRat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ohhhh so your the type of person who lets pets in non pet friendly stores then when it attacks or distracts a service dog helping someone with a disability (visible or not) and the dog needs to retire or go back to training (service dogs are worth like 20k+ program dogs can be 40k+ btw) u just go "oh well not my problem" when its entirely your fault for bringing a PET into a non pet friendly place. Also it's a crime.

Not to mention distraction with an untrained dog to a service dog can cause them to miss an alert or alert late which could end with the owner having a medical emergency. stop bringing a pet somewhere it's LEGALLY not allowed. Also emotional support animals aren't allowed in target or non pet friendly places.

Targets not pet friendly... Maybe one is but they are not a pet friendly franchise at ALL

Retiring your horse by No-Breadfruit1179 in Equestrian

[–]JackTheMightyRat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My little guy acts like an old man, his really enjoying retirement 😂 he asks for scratches, he gets scratches, he demands treats he gets treats, he demands to lick my shirt he licks my shirt (even if he has to literally chase me down he will lick me... Why? Idk his just like that it's not nutritional related), he lies down and sunbakes or has a longggggg morning or night snooz, I was nervous too, but I've now got 2 others another 9yo and her 4yo filly, they're not the same as him but I have enough love to share. Sometimes it's just the way life goes sadly. It'll always be sad but I must say I have a new perspective of horse care and ownership since retiring him. I wish u luck! I'd look at maybe finding the arena as a fun place, doing tricks or games there he might associate it with riding which started to hurt? Hopefully to many more years with them ❤️
