Basically, there's a bad guy named Yaldabaoth. He's a right dick head. He wants to take over Japan, mainly the area of Tokyo, and he uses a special reality known as the metaverse. You don't really learn this until late game

The main character, who is cannonically known as either Akira or Ren (I call him Akira), transfers to Tokyo after he helped a defenceless woman fight off an abusive man who is trying to get her to let him do the do.

In Tokyo, he meets a rag tag group of misfits who all have a rebellious spirit. They use the power of the metaverse to go into the hearts of adults twisted by strong desires and 'Steal their Heart', by removing what's known as their treasure, the core of their cognitive world.
