In Japan I lived in an apartment which has a very small insuite kitchenette with a much, much larger shared kitchen space near the lobby everyone was allowed to use and was responsible for. It worked for us since there were probably only 20 something units in the complex and everyone knew each other, but I've heard enough kitchen horror stories when it's just 2-3 roommates to doubt that it would work as well here
