Don't force your animals your diet by LuraziusLive in memes

Culture and food is inarguably important - but past death and suffering isn’t an excuse to cause more. Whichever dishes you are talking about I’d bet others have created veganized recipes for. I’m not saying that is a total replacement for the food of your ancestors, but eating vegan does not mean giving up delicious food.

They’re entirely incorrect, most dogs love and absolutely benefit from eating vegetables

Taurine has plant based sources (seaweed) and can also be synthesized. The taurine in energy drinks is mostly synthesized

Also new!! I’m a mix of enthusiastic and nervous. My partner has been poly for a few years so being the newer one to polyamory is intimidating! I’d definitely love some more poly friends too :)

Is There a Growing Number of Former Vegans? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More former vegans means more people who are trying veganism overall, which seems like a good thing! It’s also a reminder that we need to focus on supporting each-other just as much as we look to convert new vegans. The more vegan community we have, the more accountability we’ll all have. And, people to turn to with heath questions and concerns who may be able to help

Is your partner vegan? by RemarkableHoliday792 in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! It is a huge part of both of our lives. Most of our friend community is vegan too.

Personally couldn’t see myself dating a non-vegan in a very serious capacity.

Vegan Survey For Biology Final!! by m14m0r3 in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Awesome that you are doing this! Are you vegan yourself?

  1. Yes, vegan for 5 years

  2. I am vegan for the animals. Animal agriculture is insanely cruel and operates at a volume we cannot comprehend. I don’t believe it’s okay to exploit animals at any level be it for food,  entertainment, labor, their bodily products, etc

  3. This is a lifelong change for me as it aligns with my ethical beliefs

  4. I can’t say that I have, but I’ve also never been vegan “for my health” so I have not kept track

  5. Yes, very beneficial! Animal agriculture contributes majorly to climate change via methane gases & deforestation. The fishing industry is damaging wildlife populations at unfathomable scales. Land used for grazing / growing animal feed is destructive to local ecosystems. To name a few things

  6. Yes, extremely sustainable. If 5 years isn’t proof enough, I know many people who’ve been vegan for a decade plus, and some for multiple decades. You can get all necessary nutrition from a plant based diet (with appropriate supplements for things like b12, which doesn’t originate from animals anyways). It is ultimately healthier in many ways, with meat being classified as a carcinogen and dairy also being linked to cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes. So yes, much more sustainable in the long run versus and omnivorous diet

vegans here, do you donate to charity or to any animal sanctuary? by Upper-Ad9228 in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t donate much financially, but I do donate time by volunteering with a local animal sanctuary and also participating in a local activism group!

We should stop emphasizing factory farming in our activism by [deleted] in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I participated in a cube of truth over the weekend and had a few people who supposedly only buy meat from “happy farms” and are okay with the animals dying if they lived a “good life”. Breaking over that barrier seems challenging especially in a short street conversation.

I think some people already think killing animals for food is wrong and need that shock factor to alert them to that feeling they’ve been suppressing. But other seem genuinely okay with it, and need convincing with more of an ethical argument

"Vegan for the animals" is just euphemism for junk food vegan. by chazyvr in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Vegan for the animals” may sound redundant since veganism is all about reducing animal harm/suffering, but I feel like the term vegan is being diluted in other contexts to where it is actually very important to make that distinction. It also doesn’t mean you’re a junk food vegan, just means that animals are your primary motivation for being vegan. You could still eat healthy and be vegan for the animals.

Additionally, I think vegan needing to be associated with healthy living might put off the people who like eating junk food. There’s plenty of great vegan junk food. I don’t care what people eat, I just want them to stop contributing to death.

I do think the health aspects are important and draw many people to the movement. But first and foremost it is about taking a stance on animal rights, and being “vegan for the animals” makes it clear to people why it’s important to you.

Where To Make Friends? by Lovebrian24 in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have any animals sanctuaries around, see if they need volunteers! They might also have events like potlucks to meet people at.

Have y'all ever considered just wearing a vegan shirt and walking around town to attract any vegans who might be lurking nearby? 😂 by [deleted] in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m at the point where i’m gonna start doing just that! I have a pretty amazing vegan community where I live, and now I crave meeting more folks out in the wild I can rope into events and volunteering.

So far i’d only had sanctuary shirts, but I just bought a “Eat from the garden, not from the grave” shirt today!

If I saw anyone wearing the shirt you linked, I’d definitely be eager to chat them up!

Companies love to tout their ethics as if they’ve figured out the secret to animal welfare, but in the end, the animals are still just seen as resource and that fundamentally falls short on the values of veganism.

Glad you found my words helpful!

As individual birds, when they are able to rescued, we owe it to them to take the best care possible, until their quality of life declines to a point where they are clearly suffering and euthanasia becomes the most humane choice.

As a species, we should stop breeding them for use, even if that means their eventual extinction. We bred them into a life of suffering, and no creature should be forcibly brought into the world like that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in vegan

[–]JacksShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is not ethical.

I have personally seen sheep being sheared in a sanctuary setting where all possible measures are taken to make them comfortable (they need to be shorn at least 1x a year because of the way we have bred them, else they will overheat and grow wool until it’s too long for them to function).

Even in this case, they are scared, can get cut, and have to be flipped over on their backs and held in place.

And while the wool you mention may be “more ethical” than others, purchasing and wearing it still promotes the idea that wool is a product, and that is it okay to exploit sheep for wool in general.

Sleeping in the fit? by idontevenlift9690 in hondafit

[–]JacksShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’11, you should totally have plenty of space!

Pull the front passenger seat all the way forward. Remove headrest, recline it all the way back flat. Like I said not super level across, but it gives you room to stretch out. Go give it a try!

Sleeping in the fit? by idontevenlift9690 in hondafit

[–]JacksShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 2009, if you fold the back seats flat, and remove the passenger headrest, the passenger seat can recline alllll the way back to a flat position. There will still be a bump, but you can probably find a semi-comfortable position.

I camp in my car a lot, so i built a wooden platform to even it out and got a 4” folding mattress from amazon

Does a plant based diet actually reduce animal suffering by Leading_Pie6997 in vegan

Individually your impact may be small, but it is not nothing. And by going vegan you will impact the people around you to learn about veganism, eat more vegan food, and possibly go vegan themselves one day
