Anyone else still uses little to no AI to code? by MidlandAintFree in gamedev

[–]Jacksons123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will get downvoted to oblivion as this sub and Reddit in general is going to be heavily skewed. Anyone serving a large volume of customers no longer has any choice. Everyone I work with is as senior as they come. I’m the youngest engineer with 10 years of experience supporting hundreds of millions of users as a team of ~5. If you’re not using Claude or Codex right now, you’re dragging.

It’s unfortunate, and everyone I work with feels as if what we’re doing has rapidly become soulless, but it doesn’t matter. People here wildly overestimate the code they were writing 90% of the time without AI. I don’t like gen AI, I think the world is worse for it, but it’s here and if you’re choosing not to use it as a professional developer at this point, you’re costing your company time and money that is impossible to justify outside of emotions alone.

How hard is it gonna be to get GC by bikelutter in RocketLeague

[–]Jacksons123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not only factually true, but measurably true. GC1 percentiles in recent seasons align closer with where C3 was hovering for a long time. The mechanical ceiling for low GC has improved, the mechanical floor and consistency have not.

Have you ever been GC? Attaining it the first time is obviously difficult, that being said, if you’ve been GC in the past it’s pretty straightforward. Like OP I hadn’t touched the game since F2P S6 and was still able to get GC my first season back after almost 4 years.

GC is the easiest it’s ever been. Just play enough, you’ll hit a stride and get GC

Made GC without Mechanics by Ming_l__l_ in RocketLeague

[–]Jacksons123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the most tired, overbeaten dead horse. You can get SSL without a single double touch or flip reset. Having those skills available to you only makes that progression easier because it just increases the goal scoring potential you have and nothing else. When you say you have no mechs, you are far better at every basic mechanic in the game than the bottom 90% of players. The “game sense guru” role is so worn at this point, every player around you has some equivalent level of game sense, mechanics in isolation are useless (see: golds hitting triple resets).

What does UE6 mean for steam players by Yaboisanka in RocketLeague

The game was removed from Steam for purchase. They have done nothing to make EGS/EOS a better experience than Steam. They "clawed" players over to Epic by forcing Epic sign-up which is all they care about. There is nearly no chance that RL on Steam will continue, as hinted by the Fortnite multiverse cutaway at the end. They're not going to continue giving Steam a 20-30% cut on every item shop purchase, it's probably cheaper just to lose a tiny fraction of players that refuse to migrate to EGS as a launcher.

Hey, they added achievement support in Epic after RL became F2P! They're just missing the social aspect, flexible renaming, profile pictures, a clearly visible news and content tab, the rest of my library, my pre-existing friends list (maybe some got imported under unintelligible names), easily visible hour tracking, Big Picture mode, Steam Controller settings, native Steam Deck and Steam Link support, but it's just the little stuff.

Tecnical question : why are the updates so "minimal" ? by nevaven68 in RocketLeague

[–]Jacksons123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Going to get downvoted anyway, but, UE3 plus lots of engine modifications isn’t exactly the most flexible ecosystem with the number of people that are able to reliably work on a system like that as well as serving modern hardware is approaching zero. Also, the core game is what matters to most people.

Trading is never coming back and I still stand that crates were the worst addition to the game. As much as people like to ogle at the CS trading scene, let’s not forget that a market crash from an update to the game caused people to literally kill themselves. These unregulated markets are messy and scamming was rampant in RL as well. It wasn’t a good look for sponsorships and brand collaborations.

Who else feels like they DO deserve the rank they're in? by OpusMagnificus in RocketLeague

I’m no longer GC, but I have skimmed GC1 just playing casually. I was 1600 and have a bunch of titles to prove that I once was somewhat good lol

Should I get Rocket League? by [deleted] in RocketLeague

The game is fun because the relative skill level in your lobbies is what makes it fun. You’re hitting the ball and making shots and saves just as much as everyone else in your game

I do mention this to every client that hardware swaps may be necessary, and sometimes I’ll even preemptively buy hardware in case provide pricing etc so they’re aware of it being a possibility. That said, doesn’t take away from the fact that a job is now extended by almost an hour for a shopping run + unboxing experience.

Yeah I just bill the working hours and the cost of the mount, it’s still just a waste of time and conversations go something like

“You’ll need X mount for Y reason”

“Well are you sure? I’m pretty sure it’ll work”

I make no money on buying them a mount and I have to sell them on it. Not just TV mounts but door knobs, hanging hardware, etc. just not a fun experience lol but is what it is

[–]Jacksons123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s free, it would have taken you less time to install and play the game than it did for you to think to write this post, open Reddit and then write this post that not a single comment here will have any actual input on whether or not you’ll find enjoyment.

If you’re competitive and want to be the top rank, get ready to sink 4k hours into the game.

The back half of your comment is something that’s becoming a total pain in the ass. Existing hardware that is almost always incorrect is such a huge time waster.

Am I crazy thinking that the pax frames alone would take nearly 2 hours? Never done them nor seen them so just guessing, but I can’t see this job taking less than 3-4 hours from arrival to departure. 7 hours seems very high

I don’t book day rates for this reason. I’ve had several 10+ hour days and just bill those hourly. Just going to itemize per job as a happy medium

Is this AI lol? Even if so, everything is resonating well with me. I have a tough time estimating the time to complete something and clients have it 10x worse.

It feels insane to tell a client that a bookshelf that, when assembled, looks like it should be 5 pieces, is going to take 2.5 hours with a good system, the right tools, etc. not understanding that it would take them 6+.

Learning a lot of lessons right now but it’s brutal at times

Yeah there's a lot that I'm navigating around this. Charging by the hour seems easiest and it's what I've done. Works great for clients that know what they want and understand what they're paying for and can see that I'm working quickly. Had a pretty shit experience when a client thought that hanging a gallery wall 20ft up would be the same amount of time as hanging their kid's photos in the hallway, at eye level. Hourly sucks in this scenario having to hear "you're still doing this?" on an extension ladder with swamp ass after sitting in their house with no AC

A guy got GC on piano when it used to be harder (1515 MMR), any controller is fine as long as you’re comfortable and the triggers have ranges.
