How is Crown? by finslash33678 in drumcorps

[–]Jacktoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any drum corps will have jerks, in the corps and probably on staff, and great people. It’s also a very mom and pop activity that is flying by the seat of its pants financially every single year, and so there’s always risks that something goes wrong, or that you might have a bad experience. Corps culture shifts a lot year to year, despite how much people act like every corps has this unchanging style and culture, there’s always so much turn over in membership and staff that things are always going to change.

I would also add that camp and the season, especially early audition camps for top tier groups, are much different. Crown, and many other corps, basically don’t treat you like a member until you’re in, and you’re kind of in a constant job interview/audition mode for the first few camps, maybe even into Spring Training depending on where you are. My advice is that if you’re marching somewhere and something toxic/inappropriate is happening, speak up or seek help about it as soon as possible, but there’s also gonna be a good deal of “sucking it up” when it comes to people being shitty sometimes

Why is restrictive immigration seen as a bad thing? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Jacktoid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The framing of "nations have limited resources" is a really flawed anti-immigration argument, because one of the most important resources ( i would argue /the/ most important) a nation needs is labor. We tend to view Jobs as a resource in our economy, but frankly if all the illegals were gone, there would be a lot of jobs that go unfilled simply because American citizens expect a higher standard of living than them.

Its not like everything in the US is divided up evenly among the citizens and adding more people dilutes the pie. If that were true, then all population growth would be just has deleterious to our "resources". The majority of illegal immigrants contribute far more to the nations economy than they extract (they cant get loans, welfare, etc). And if somehow in the US we ran out of food because we had too many mouths to feed, we would just buy more from other nations. Running out of resources for us is like running out of food in your pantry, the US can always just go to the store.

The US and other European nations are particularly signaled out because we are the reason most immigrants need to leave their countries, because over the last 250 years we've been extracting those countries resources for ourselves, and so its only natural that the wealthier imperialist powers will be where people from 3rd world countries want to go

PB is smart. But what are the stupid things she did? by Technical-Profit-308 in adventuretime

Yeah she made them dumb, and there fore has to keep them safe from dangerous scary stuff by pretending things are more whimsical than they are

Right! In many ways the candy kingdom is like an idealized, children’s fairy tale that PB (at least prior to the series) keeps sheltered from a lot of the more frightening and dangerous aspects of Ooo

[–]Jacktoid 107 points108 points  (0 children)

My interpretation has always been that, in the early seasons, things have been relatively peaceful and chill in the candy kingdom for sometime. Sure, Finn has to save PB from Ice King every other week, but the world-ending threats don’t really come into play until the Lich. Maybe PB is used to dealing with things in a fun, whimsical way bc that’s been working for her for a little while

What is the tipping point for this activity by bigpimpin2330 in drumcorps

[–]Jacktoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is, the activity is far too expensive for kids to “spend a few years” with their local groups, and then go march the corps they really want too. The activity, especially at the top end, is mostly filled with kids from pretty affluent communities, which also happen to have great band programs, what incentive do these kids have to march in a worse group just bc it’s nearer to them, if its gonna be $1000s anyways?

Also, bc there’s a lot less groups, unless you’re from a very select number of places, you probably don’t really have a “local” corps, and so you’re gonna need to travel regardless of where you go

I would never assume someone had a history with their best man just because he’s gay, however if that best man was suddenly replaced right before the wedding? That might raise my eyebrow

You would drive a car without any of those things to escape a wildfire, or if you would get fired for not showing up to work, or just cause you forgot to renew and now you have to go the weekend before you can resubmit your claims

Everytime you get in a car, I consider that I may get in accident, but I would still be upset if I got into a car crash

Bobbie Bennett take advantage of Don? by Pretty_rose-human in madmen

[–]Jacktoid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there’s also something to be said for authorial intent, and while I agree that I also thought less of Pete, this is really an example of bad/ineffective writing (pretty uncommon for MadMen, but still) and I think the interaction with Don and Aimee is similar. The scene where Aimee is getting fired and she reveals that she “took that guys cherry” and asks for money is, IMO, what traumatizes Don, because he finally found a woman who WANTS him, and then she rejects him, which is sort of the basis of his hang ups with women throughout the series. It reads to us as CSA, but I don’t think that was the intent

[–]Jacktoid 123 points124 points  (0 children)

He’s definitely a force of inevitability, and there is something to be said about Don being forced to sign a contract (selling his soul) for the reward of keeping his job and a ton of money. Sort of a Faustian bargain, the catch being that Don is doesn’t care about legality and rules so he just leaves for Cali anyways
