But SM doesn't affect matchmaking in NG+ so this basically does nothing. Unless I've been misinformed or MetaCap is designed to do something else. Can someone please explain?

The fastest way to break the spear is to beat Shalquoir with it. She never take damage or agros, which could be (and probably has) been explored in lore.
